There is a bit of disagreement about Gru's exact age in the movie. While some sources say that he is twelve, others say that he is eleven.

The movie cleverly depicts the culture of the 1970s in a variety of ways. The music of the 1970s is inserted throughout the story; for example, when Gru goes to an interview with his favorite supervillain group, Linda Ronstadt's "You're No Good" (1974) is played.

The leader of the group of villains is Belle Bottom, who is appropriate attired in the 1970s fashion, and Gru goes to the movies, where the 1970s icon, "Jaws" (1975), is showing.

When Gru arrives at the bus stop after Career Day at school, his Minions are waiting for him, with their crazy disguises and his rocket motorcycle. Fans of the franchise might also remember that at the end of "Minions" (2015), the Minions become enamored with an even younger Gru, after he foils Scarlet's attempt to steal the Queen's crown for the second time, taking it for himself. Instead, Wild Knuckles forms another group with new henchmen, but they desert their boss after he reveals that he cannot pay them. He then makes Gru, who he had kidnapped in order to uncover the treasure Gru stole from the villain gang, his apprentice, and the two form a close friendship.

Dr. Nefario, who has been seen in the other movies of the "Despicable Me" franchise, is the owner of the store where Gru must report for his interview. He is a younger version of himself - mid-30s - according to "Despicable Me Wiki", and gives Gru a gadget that serves him well during his interview.

Although he initially turns down Gru's offer to become his mad scientist, Dr. Nefario apparently has second thoughts after both Gru and the Minions beg him to join their group.

So the supervillain group had stolen the Zodiac Stone and then double-crossed their leader, believing he was dead. That is why they need to add a new member to the group. When they see Gru, however, they laugh at him, saying that they had invited him for an interview because they thought he was just a tiny man.

Angry about his treatment at the hands of his idols, and taking advantage of a distraction caused by one of the other hopefuls, Gru uses the new weapon that the owner of the store had just given to him, a gadget that shoots a sticky hand out to seize things, and takes the Zodiac Stone for himself. Gru is in big trouble now! His idols become his enemies, and when the former leader of the supervillain group discovers that Gru has taken the stone, he kidnaps Gru; he quickly finds out, however, that Gru no longer has possession of the Zodiac Stone.

Answer: Otto

Otto is described as being round and chubby, with braces on his teeth. As Gru is being chased by the supervillain group after stealing their precious artifact, he gives the stone to Otto for safekeeping. Otto then makes a huge mistake, trading Gru's precious, newly-won artifact for a pet rock. Gru is furious upon learning about Otto's mishap, and fires all the Minions as his henchmen.

This means Gru must strike out on his own to relocate the artifact, but don't worry! The Minions aren't too far behind him.

After he is kidnapped, Kevin, Bob and Stuart go to rescue him, and Otto begins a long search to reclaim the precious relic.

Wild Knuckles is really in a world of hurt after his henchmen leave him. He makes Young Gru do chores around his lair, but Gru saves his idol's life after Wild Knuckles falls into his pool of crocodiles. Then they work together, appearing to be a grandfather and grandson at the Bank of Evil, where they steal the Mona Lisa. Gru is finally beginning to earn the respect of his mentor. Upon their return to the lair, however, Wild Knuckles becomes despondent when he discovers that his former supervillain friends have destroyed his home, and decides to abandon his life of crime, telling Gru to go home.
