Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
'Bingo: The King of the Mornings' is a Brazilian film. Bingo is the clown persona of Augusto (Vladimir Brichta), an actor who becomes the host of a children's TV show, with the caveat that he must not reveal his true identity. Ironically, while entertaining children across the country, he becomes distant from his own son, Gabriel. The character was based on Arlindo Barreto, one of the various actors who played the stock character of Bozo the Clown on Brazilian television.
Chuckles is a toy clown from 'Toy Story 3', voiced by Bud Luckey. He has a grumpy face when he comes to life, although he smiles in 'toy mode'. Along with Big Baby and Lots-o'-Huggin' (Lotso) Bear, he used to belong to a little girl called Daisy until she forgot them after a picnic. The three toys hitched a ride on a Pizza Planet truck to Sunnyside Daycare, with Lotso becoming the dictator of the toys. Chuckles was later taken home by Bonnie, one of the children at the daycare and the new owner of Andy's toys.
Helmut Doork is the main character in 'The Day The Clown Cried', played by Jerry Lewis. The film is set in a Nazi concentration camp where Doork is imprisoned after mocking Adolf Hitler. He performs for the inmates and while most of them reject him, a group of Jewish children find him funny. He ends up accompanying them on a train to Auschwitz and leading them into a gas chamber. The subject matter of the film was heavily criticised for being in appropriate. At Lewis' insistence, the film was never finished or released; however, he donated a copy of the reel to the Library of Congress, on condition that it would not be released until June 2024.
With his green hair, purple suit and hideous smile (caused by falling into a vat of chemical waste), the Joker is one of Batman's most iconic nemeses, an evil genius with a cruel sense of humour and weapons that include razor-edged playing cards and killer 'joy buzzers'. Actors who have played him include Cesar Romero on TV and Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix in various 'Batman' films. He is sometimes depicted as having an on-off relationship with Harley Quinn, his former psychiatrist turned sidekick.
Krusty the Clown is a character in 'The Simpsons', an alcoholic, green-haired Jewish clown who hosts a popular entertainment show and owns a chain of fast-food restaurants, Krusty Burger. The son of an Orthodox rabbi, his real name is Herschel Krustofsky and he has several children with multiple women. In 'The Simpsons Movie', he is about to slaughter the pig in a live commercial, but Homer rescues and adopts the pig, naming it Plopper. Plopper turns to be part of a prophecy Grampa Simpson has about an environmental disaster in Springfield.
Patch Adams is a real-life clown, social activist and doctor who came up with the idea of 'Clown Care', where specially trained clowns visit paediatric hospitals (and sometimes adults as well) to cheer up the patients. Robin Williams played him in the 1998 film of the same name, based on Adams' life. Adams criticised the film, saying that it had merely portrayed him as a 'funny doctor' and ignored the activism aspect of his work (such as promoting healthcare that is not dependent on insurance policies), and that none of the profits from the film had gone to his free hospital.
Pennywise the Dancing Clown is the most iconic form of 'It', the antagonist of the Stephen King book of the same name. It is a shapeshifting monster that lives in the sewers of Derry, Maine, and preys on children, using a red balloon to attract their attention; this is how It kills Georgie, the younger brother of Bill Denbrough, a boy with a stammer. Its other forms include a fountain of blood, a swarm of leeches and a mummy. Pennywise was played by Tim Curry in the TV series and Bill Skarsgard in the 2017 film.
Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig) is a murderous clown who appears in Rob Zombie's 'House of 1000 Corpses'. He wears a small top hat with a US flag, and runs a petrol station and fried chicken restaurant that doubles as a haunted house called Captain Spaulding's Museum of Monsters and Madmen. He is the patriarch of the Firefly family, which also includes Otis Driftwood, who skins his victims, Tiny, a giant (played by real-life giant Matthew McGrory), and Baby, who lures victims to the Firefly farm by posing as a hitch-hiker.
Stitches the Clown (Ross Noble) is the titular character of 'Stitches', a 2012 British comedy-horror film. He died at a child's birthday party after an accident with a knife, and comes back from the dead to get revenge on Tommy, the child in question, and his friends. When Tommy is sixteen, he has a birthday party and Stitches murders his friends in various gruesome ways. Tommy manages to kill Stitches by destroying a magic egg in the clown's caravan, but the egg mends itself, indicating Stitches will return.
Violator is a villain in the 'Spawn' franchise and the oldest of the Phlebiac Brothers. His true form is a monstrous insect-like creature, but his human form as 'the Clown' is a fat clown with blue make-up. His job is to recruit Hellspawn for Hell's army, and he has been killed multiple times, only to return. He is played by John Leguizamo in the 1997 film.
As for the wrong answers: the Riddler is another villain from the 'Batman' franchise who torments his opponents with puzzles and traps, and wears a green mask and green costume with question marks on it. Jakob Heym is the main character of Jurek Becker's 'Jakob the Liar', a Jewish man in Nazi-occupied Poland who lies to other people in the ghetto where he lives about having a radio in order to bring them hope. He was played by Robin Williams in the 1999 film based on the book. Chucky is an evil ventriloquist's doll, possessed by the soul of a serial killer, and the main villain of the 'Child's Play' films. Gonzo is one of the Muppets, a strange blue creature with a long nose and a penchant for doing stunts. Finally, Beetlejuice is a 'bio-exorcist' played by Michael Keaton in the film of the same name, who is summoned by a pair of ghosts to drive away the family living in their old house.
