Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 1970 movie "Two Mules for Sister Sara," Hogan, a cowboy played by Clint Eastwood, rescues a nun called Sister Sara from some roughneck cowboys. What actress took up the habit to play Sister Sara?

Answer: Shirley MacLaine

Hogan becomes suspicious of the sister when he sees her smoking cigars and sipping whiskey. Turns out she is a prostitute masquerading as a nun in order to travel more safely. And Hogan is not what he appears to be either, but you will have to watch the movie for the rest of the story.

What an illustrious film career MacLaine has had. I especially loved her in "Steel Magnolias." She received several awards for her character of Aurora Greenway in "Terms of Endearment" in 1983. Besides her film career, she has done theater, danced, sang, authored books and been involved in activist pursuits.
2. The 1985 movie "Agnes of God" centers on Sister Agnes, a young nun who secretly gives birth to a baby that is later found dead. Jane Fonda plays the court-appointed psychiatrist who is brought in to investigate the situation. What actress took up the habit to play Sister Agnes?

Answer: Meg Tilly

The psychiatrist's investigation becomes difficult because Sister Agnes has no memory of giving birth, and the Mother Superior played by Anne Bancroft is somewhat uncooperative.

Tilly's plans to be a dancer were derailed due to an injury, and after an appearance on a hit television show, she turned her efforts to acting. In 1983, she did show off some of her dance moves in "The Big Chill." She received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her work in "Agnes of God."
3. In the 1966 movie "The Trouble With Angels," Hayley Mills plays a bored rebellious student at a Catholic girls' school causing one problem after another for the very strict Mother Superior. What actress took up the habit to play the Mother Superior?

Answer: Rosalind Russell

Many times the Mother Superior is on the verge of expelling Mills' character, but relents because she knows the difficult home life the girl has endured.

It is interesting to note that in 1962 Russell played the mother of the famous stripper Gypsy Rose Lee in the movie "Gypsy," and in "The Trouble With Angels" had the opportunity to work with Gypsy Rose Lee, who played the part of Mrs. Phipps.
4. The 1969 movie "Change of Habit" has Elvis Presley playing a doctor who works in an inner-city clinic. He falls in love with a young speech therapist who comes to help in the clinic, but doesn't know that she is really a nun, Sister Michelle Gallagher. What actress took up the habit to play Sister Michelle Gallagher?

Answer: Mary Tyler Moore

Sister Michelle is one of three nuns sent to the clinic, who as a "social experiment", are allowed to change their habits for everyday street clothes. Sister Michelle finds herself having feelings for the doctor which leaves us to wonder if she will permanently change her habit.

Playing Beth Jarret in the 1980 movie "Ordinary People" is probably the film role for which Moore is most remembered. She received three best actress nominations, Golden Globe, Academy Award, and BAFTA, and won the Golden Globe. She also had a very successful television career.
5. "The Nun's Story" from 1959 introduces viewers to the fictional character of Sister Luke who is based on a real-life nun. Sister Luke's faith is shaken during World War II when she realizes she cannot refrain from taking sides in regard to Hitler's actions. What actress took up the habit to play Sister Luke?

Answer: Audrey Hepburn

The character of Sister Luke was based on Sister Marie-Louise Habets, who worked as a nurse in the Belgian Congo. Hepburn often said this was her favorite movie, and in preparation for the role, she met Habets. Later, Habets nursed Hepburn during her recovery from a serious horse-riding accident. The movie resulted in an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for Hepburn.
6. The 1945 American film "The Bells of St. Mary's" stars Bing Crosby as Father O'Malley who works in an inner-city Catholic school where he meets Sister Mary Benedict. Sister Mary is faithful and determined, and she and Father O'Malley often clash as they work to save the school from being condemned. What actress took up the habit to play Sister Mary Benedict?

Answer: Ingrid Bergman

Sister Mary wanted to save the run-down school, but Father O'Malley feels the students would be better served in a more modern school. Despite their disagreements, the two become good friends.

Bergman was nominated in 1946 for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role as Sister Mary Benedict, but lost to Jennifer Jones, who also played a nun in "The Song of Bernadette." Bergman made over 50 films and acted in five different languages - Swedish, English, German, French, and Italian.
7. In the 1990 British comedy "Nuns on the Run," characters Brian Hope and Charlie McManus are working for the mob, but decide they want out and wind up hiding in a nunnery disguised as Sister Euphemia and Sister Inviolata. What two actors took up habits to play Sister Euphemia and Sister Inviolata?

Answer: Eric Idle and Robbie Coltrane

Brian and Charlie realize the mob boss is going to have them killed after they help rob some drug dealers, so they decide to steal the money for themselves. Of course things don't go as planned, and they use the nun disguises to hid from the boss.

Idle wrote for "Monty Python" from 1969 to 1983 and created unique characters, many with strange speech mannerisms, such as the man who spoke in anagrams and the butcher who switched back and forth between polite and rude replies. Coltrane has played numerous film and television roles, and is especially known for his work in the "Harry Potter" movies as Rubeus Hagrid, the Hogwarts gamekeeper and close friend and protector of Harry.
8. In the 1966 semi-autobiographical film "The Singing Nun," the character of Sister Ann is loosely based on real-life nun Jeanine Deckers who recorded the hit song "Dominique." What actress took up the habit to play the part of Sister Ann?

Answer: Debbie Reynolds

Because of her music, Sister Ann becomes a celebrity and even makes an appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show"; however, she begins to question if she is truly doing the work of God. Jeanine Deckers did not like the movie and called it "fiction."

Reynolds' acting career began when she was 16 years old, but really took off around four years later when she landed the lead role in "Singin' in the Rain" in 1952. She also starred in "Tammy and the Bachelor" in 1957 and in "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" in 1964.
9. In the 1995 movie "Dead Man Walking," the main character is based on a real-life nun Sister Helen Prejean, who goes into a prison and befriends a murderer on death row. What actress took up the habit to play Sister Helen Prejean?

Answer: Susan Sarandon

Sarandon has played a number of memorable roles, such as an unhappy waitress in "Thelma and Louise" and a witch in "The Witches of Eastwick." She has been nominated several times for the Academy Award for Best Actress, and her performance in "Dead Man Walking" won her the award for 1995.
10. In the 1992 comedy movie "Sister Act," lounge singer Deloris Van Cartier finds herself in the witness protection program and posing as Sister Mary Clarence. What actress got things shakin' when she took up the habit to play Sister Mary Clarence?

Answer: Whoopi Goldberg

Deloris witnesses her boyfriend Vince committing a murder, and the authorities want her to testify against him. The problem is that Vince hasn't been captured yet which puts Deloris' life in danger. To keep her safe, witness protection puts her in a convent as Sister Mary Clarence. Not surprisingly, she clashes with some of the nuns and their restrictive lifestyle, but in the end it is the nuns who come to her rescue.

Goldberg has given spectacular performances in such movies as "The Color Purple" and "Ghost." Her role as Oda Mae Brown in "Ghost" won her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress of 1990. As Sister Mary Clarence, she won both a Golden Globe and an MTV award.
