Mr. Jordan is the angel supervisor in the way station to heaven. He is in charge of the recently departed souls who are waiting for the plane to heaven. He is the supervisor of novice angel 7013 who makes a critical mistake when identifying a departed soul.

Joe is affectionately known as "The Flying Pug". His ambition is to become heavyweight champion of the world.

Answer: He is killed in a plane crash.

Joe is flying his private plane to New York City for his next fight when a control cable severs and the plane crashes. Angel 7013 happens on the scene and prematurely retrieves Joe's soul, although Joe is not dead. At this point Mr. Jordan arrives on the scene and takes charge.

Answer: Robert Montgomery

Robert Montgomery was nominated for the Academy Award for his portrayal of Joe Pendleton.
He earned a previous nomination for playing a psychotic killer in "Night Must Fall". Montgomery's movie career was interrupted by World War II where he served for five years in various assignments in the US Navy. He participated in the D-Day invasion onboard a destroyer and was also a PT Boat commander. He later put this experience to work as he directed PT boat scenes in "They Were Expendable", which also starred John Wayne. He is the father of "Bewitched" actress Elizabeth Montgomery.

Joe's poor saxophone playing convinces his manager, Corkle, that he is actually Joe Pendleton. A lot of the comedy in the film involves Corkle talking to the invisible Mr. Jordan. The saxophone is also featured toward the end of the film where the heavyweight championship fight is taking place.

Answer: He has been shot while fighting for the heavyweight boxing championship.

Joe has been killed in his identity as Farnsworth by Tony, Farnsworth's secretary. In his ghostly presence he is listening to the radio when he hears Murdock drop to the canvas. Mr. Jordan gives Joe a chance to assume his body. Joe does and wins the championship. But, he loses his identity as Farnsworth and any recognition he had to his past life is gone.

Answer: He is Joe Pendleton's manager and trainer.

Max Corkle is Joe's fight manager and trainer. When Joe appears to Max in Bruce Farnsworth's body, he convinces Max that he is Joe by playing an instrument. Joe then hires Max to get him ready for the championship fight. James Gleason, who plays Max, earned an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor. He "steals" every scene he is in.

Answer: Max Corkle learns about it from Joe and tells the police.

The scene where the police detective is interviewing witnesses is very funny. Max Corkle is trying to convince the police about Joe, Mr. Jordan and the body switching. Of course, the detective thinks he is a nut. Max turns on the radio and hears the announcer say the saxophone is hanging at ringside and realizes that Joe has assumed Murdoch's body.

He races to the arena where Joe tells him that Farnsworth's body is in the refrigerator. After Max tells the police, Farnsworth's wife and Tony are arrested for murder. Joe, as Murdoch, fires his crooked manager and hires Max

Answer: There is a chance that Joe and Bette will have a future together.

Joe has fallen in love with Bette, played by Evelyn Keyes. He has just enough time to tell her that if a stranger approaches her, especially a boxer, to give him another chance. Almost immediately he is shot by Tony. As Murdoch at the end of the film, he sees Bette waiting outside the dressing room.

There is a hint of recognition between them and he invites her to get a cup of coffee.
