quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who did Dominic Monaghan suggest Viggo Mortensen dated during the filming of "The Two Towers?"

Answer: A woman with a beard.

In the scene where Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas are surrounded by the horsemen of Rohan, many of the riders were women wearing false beards (they couldn't find enough competent male riders.) Dominic, however, insinuated that Viggo was overly attracted to bearded women, and Viggo was less than amused.
2. What is apparently a property of elven rope?

Answer: It can untie itself.

Sam received elven rope as a gift from Galadriel in the extended edition of the first DVD. In the beginning of the extended edition of "The Two Towers," it unknots itself and slides down the cliff when Sam needs it back.
3. When Aragorn falls from the cliff into the river, he is picked up by a stray horse, Brego. According to the extended edition, to whom did Brego belong?

Answer: Theodred

Theodred is Theoden's son who was killed by orcs. His horse goes slightly mad afterward, and only Aragorn can calm him. Aragorn tells Eowyn to let Brego go free, which is why he is wandering feral when Aragorn washes up out of the river.
4. What was Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan's nickname for David Wenham, who played Faramir?

Answer: Daisy

I'm not sure why. They kept making comments during the cast commentary such as "Look, it's Daisy!" It wasn't until the end, when they called him "Daisy Wenham" during the credits that I even knew who they were discussing.
5. Aragorn likes the soup that Eowyn makes for him.

Answer: False

He nearly chokes on it and tries to pour it out without her noticing. The way I see it, Eowyn can ride a horse and use a sword, so she doesn't really need to know how to cook.
6. In the director and writer commentary, Phillipa Boyens said she was most like which character?

Answer: Eowyn

She said this during the scene when Eowyn and Aragorn swordfight. She also said Fran Walsh was most like Arwen. Very interesting (although I would rather be Eowyn any day.)
7. Which of the following authors is specifically mentioned in the documentary on Tolkien, as being a great influence on his work?

Answer: C. S. Lewis

Tolkien was also a great influence on Lewis, with references to "Numinor" and "the True West" cropping up in Lewis' "Space Trilogy". Also, Middle Earth and Narnia both began with heavenly beings singing them into existence (see "The Magician's Nephew" by Lewis and "The Silmarillion" by Tolkien.) Lewis dedicated one of his greatest works, "The Screwtape Letters", to Tolkien.
8. In the director's and writer's commentary, who does Peter Jackson credit for the victory at Helm's Deep?

Answer: Himself

This is one of the funnier moments in the commentary. Peter Jackson has a cameo in Helm's Deep, when you see him throwing down a spear at the approaching army. Peter Jackson claimed that he took out an important Uruk-hai general with the spear, thus throwing the enemy into disarray and turning the tide of the battle.
9. According to the documentaries, which of the following did NOT present a problem when filming at Edoras?

Answer: It was overrun by rabbits.

Because it was protected land, they had to save all the grass they dug up and replace it after they tore down the set. They also had to build roads out to it, because it was so isolated. It was very windy, which presented problems with Miranda Otto's wig and skirts.
10. Which of the following actors is missing part of his middle finger?

Answer: John Rhys-Davies

In order to make it look like he wasn't missing part of his finger, they simply made a small latex tip to put over the nub. However, Peter didn't know about it, and John Ryhs-Davies played a somewhat nasty trick on him.
11. What is at the very end of the credits on the extended edition?

Answer: A list of people in the official fan club.

It's massively long. I'm kicking myself that I never joined, and could've had my nerdiness preserved for posterity.
12. What was Elijah Wood's comment when Peter Jackson told him to put his sword under Sean Astin's chin when they were fighting in Gondor?

Answer: "Which chin?"

I thought this was a cheap shot, but it got a laugh out of the crew, apparently. Everyone gave Sean Astin a hard time for gaining so much weight for the role, but I think it showed dedication. He's still cute as a button.
13. At the pile of burning orcs in Rohan, Viggo Mortensen kicks a helmet and drops to his knees, screaming. Where did the emotion in the scene come from?

Answer: He broke two of his toes.

Peter Jackson shot the scene over and over again, trying to make the helmet fly past the camera. On the last take, however, Viggo kicked the helmet so hard he broke two of his toes. The helmet didn't go anywhere near the camera, but Jackson liked the intensity of Viggo's scream and kept that take in the film.
14. Who was originally a participant in the battle at Helm's Deep, but they decided (relatively early) to remove?

Answer: Arwen

When trying to sell the script, all the studios kept wanting Arwen to be a larger character. So, Peter, Phillipa and Fran wrote her into Helm's Deep. She trained for the scenes and shot a few of them before they decided it was out of character for her to be there. Haldir was at the battle, Eomer was there in the book but not in the films, and Frodo never was.
15. What was Dominic Monaghan's comment during the credits, when Viggo Mortensen's name came up?

Answer: "Madder than a fish."

The "joker" remark was for Elijah Wood, the "Scot" comment for Billy Boyd (obviously) and the "fat" comment was for Sean Astin. He keeps randomly commenting on the people on screen, then offers anyone who is still listening a free lunch in Los Angelos with Billy Boyd, "at two p.m. today."
16. What actor was NOT in the theatrical version of "The Two Towers," but WAS in the extended edition, and is also in "The Return of the King?"

Answer: John Noble

John Noble plays Denethor in the Boromir flashback, a character who figures predominantly in "The Return of the King." He was only on screen for a few minutes, but his performance was riveting.
17. What mistake in the film did Peter Jackson catch for the FIRST TIME during the director and writer commentary?

Answer: In the Great Hall, Gandalf's staff is held low from the front and high from the back.

He was pretty good-natured about the goofs, and they commented on them several times, but the one where Gandalf's staff changes is the only one he noticed for the first time during the commentary. That one was a "continuity" goof -- the two shots were filmed at different times. The other three goofs do exist, but they are all from "flipped" shots.
18. What did Dominic Monaghan back Sean Bean's car into?

Answer: A tree.

He scratched it all up. Then, to add insult to injury, before he returned it he deliberately left a dead fish in the trunk. It was there ten days before Sean Bean found it.
19. Who plays Haleth, the young Rohan warrior whom Aragorn emboldens before the battle at Helm's Deep?

Answer: Phillipa Boyens' son

His name is Callum Gittins, and Phillipa Boyens identified him as her son in the director and writer commentaries. Viggo Mortensen's son Henry is in the same scene, in the background.
20. The "stunties" and the actors they worked with (including Viggo Mortensen) had an odd way of greeting each other. What was it?

Answer: They would butt heads.

Sala Baker, my favorite stunt double, told a very funny story about greeting Orlando Bloom this way and making him see stars (Sala is a very big guy.) Thank you for taking my quiz!
