Answer: Ian McKellen

McKellen, a native of Lancashire, England got the part of Gandalf. In the previous installment of this film trilogy, Gandalf fell into darkness, but he survived. He appeared to Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli when they went into Fangorn Forest to look for Merry and Pippin. Gandalf said that he had been sent back until his task was complete and he would henceforth be known as Gandalf the White. Gandalf helped put together an army for Middle Earth to do battle with Saruman's army.

At the end of the movie, midway through the battle at Helm's Deep, Gandalf showed up with many men and they got in on the battle. McKellen was seen in the movies, "The Da Vinci Code", "X-Men" and "Apt Pupil".

In 2002, he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" but lost to Jim Broadbent for "Iris".

Other Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actor that year were Jon Voight for "Ali", Ben Kingsley for "Sexy Beast" and Ethan Hawke for "Training Day".

Answer: Liv Tyler

Tyler, born on July 1st, 1977 in New York City, was cast as Arwen in the first installment of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy and reprised her role for this film. Arwen was seen in scenes with Aragorn where they pledged their love for each other but Elrond, Arwen's father, tried to convince Aragorn to let her go. Arwen was seen going with many people to another place where she would live the rest of her life.

In a vision, Arwen was seen hovering over Aragorn's dead body. She told her father that she had made her choice and it was to be with Aragorn. Tyler had roles in the films, "Armageddon", "Jersey Girl" and "U Turn".

Answer: David Wenham

Wenham, a native of New South Wales, Australia portrayed Faramir, younger brother to Boromir and the youngest child of Denethor. Faramir saw Frodo and Sam and ordered his men to bind their hands. Frodo and Sam mentioned Boromir so Faramir asked if they knew of him.

They said yes and that was when Faramir said he was Boromir's brother. He told both of them that Boromir had died and wondered if they knew how he did. Gollum was with Sam and Frodo at this time and he went into the Forbidden Pool. The punishment for this was death. Faramir was about to kill Gollum but Frodo told him not to do it since Gollum was their guide. Eventually, Faramir saw that he could trust Frodo and Sam. Wenham guest starred on the TV series', "SeaChange", "Return to Jupiter" and "Twisted Tales".

Answer: Bernard Hill

Hill, born in 1944 in Manchester, England played Theoden. Theoden was the King of Rohan and his appearance was that of a very old man, since Saruman had poisoned his mind. While his mind was poisoned, Theoden's right hand man was Grima Wormtongue. Gandalf saw that Theoden was under Saruman's control and used his staff to get Saruman to release his grip on Theoden. Gandalf was successful and Theoden's color and blonde hair returned to him.

He recognized Wormtongue as a bad person and has him tossed out of his home.

Theoden then helped assemble an army to do battle with Saruman's army. Hill had parts in the movies, "Titanic", "Valkyrie" and "Gothika".

Answer: Viggo Mortensen

Mortensen starred in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy as Aragorn. Aragorn was seen at the beginning, when he, Legolas and Gimli searched for both Pippin and Merry. They met up with an army that had killed many orcs in the middle of the night and this army told him that they had left none alive. Aragorn, along with Legolas and Gimli, feared the worst and thought that Merry and Pippin had been killed.

They continued to look for them and entered Fangorn Forest where they reunited with Gandalf. Aragorn helped to assemble the army to do battle with Saruman's army and, during a battle (this battle was before the one at Helm's Deep), Aragorn went over a cliff and into the river below.

He was thought to have died but made it to Helm's Deep alive and well. Mortensen starred in the films, "A History of Violence", "Hidalgo" and "Carlito's Way".

In 2008, he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role for "Eastern Promises" but lost to Daniel Day Lewis for "There Will Be Blood".

Other Oscar nominees for Best Actor in a Leading Role that year were George Clooney for "Michael Clayton", Tommy Lee Jones for "In the Valley of Elah" and Johnny Depp for "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street".

Answer: Orlando Bloom

Bloom, born on January 13th, 1977 in Kent, England played Legolas Greenleaf. Legolas continued to look for Merry and Pippin with both Gimli and Aragorn. During one battle, Legolas was seen when he launched an arrow and made a miraculous move to get on a horse.

When Legolas first heard that Aragorn went over the cliff, he was distressed, even more so when someone said to leave the dead. During the battle of Helm's Deep, Legolas competed with Gimli on who would have the most kills. Bloom had roles in the movies, "Pirates of the Carribean: The Curse of the Black Pearl", "Elizabethtown" and "Black Hawk Down".

Answer: Andy Serkis

Serkis, a native of London, England was seen as Gollum. Gollum came upon Frodo and Sam near the beginning of the film and offered to guide them to Mordor. Sam was skeptical at first but Frodo convinced him to let Gollum take them to Mordor. Along the way, Gollum told Frodo and Sam to not follow any lights if they led into the swamp. Midway through the film, Gollum developed another personality, which convinced him that he had no friends. Gollum thought of Frodo as his master.

At the film's end, Gollum said to himself that he would kill both Frodo and Sam. Serkis landed roles in the films, "The Cottage", "The Prestige" and "13 Going on 30".

Answer: Brad Dourif

Dourif, born in 1950 in West Virginia, took on the role of Grima Wormtongue in this movie. Wormtongue was seen right beside Theoden on many occasions when he persuaded Theoden, who was now under Saruman's control, that he was his friend. Theoden's niece, Eowyn, knew better and fought with him constantly.

When Gandalf released Theoden from Saruman's spell, he came to his senses and saw that Wormtongue was bad news. He banished Wormtongue from his residence and all of Rohan. Dourif was seen in the movies, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", "Jungle Fever" and "Amos & Andrew".

He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Billy Bibbit in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". He lost to George Burns, who won for his role in "The Sunshine Boys".

Answer: John Rhys-Davies

Davies, who played Gimli, also voiced Treebeard, the friendly Ent (a walking tree) who saved Merry and Pippin from being attacked by orcs in Fanghorn Forest. At first, Merry and Pippin thought that Treebeard was going to hurt them but he did not. Treebeard and his fellow Ents went to the Isengard, to bring down Saruman's tower.

This was one of the two towers in the title and it gave Saruman his power, which he used to aid Sauron. Saruman's tower was in Isengard and Sauron's tower, Barad-dur, was in Mordor. Treebeard and the Ents released some water and this destroyed many members of Saruman's army as well as the Saruman's tower.

The Ents managed to not be dragged down by the water since they had the power to overcome rushes of water. Davies guest starred on the TV series "Revelations", "Fillmore!" and "House of Mouse".

Answer: Dominic Monaghan

Monaghan, born on December 8th, 1976 in Berlin, Germany had the role of Meriadoc Brandybuck, who went by the name of Merry. In the previous installment of the trilogy, Merry and Pippin had been taken by the orcs. In this installment, they were about to be killed but an army came and killed the orcs. Pippin cut the rope that bound his hands, as did Merry, and he and Merry made it to Fanghorn Forest. Pippin climbed one of the Ents and held onto its nose.

He shouted to Merry and then realized that the Ent, Treebeard, could talk. Monaghan had guest spots on the TV series', "Chuck" and "Hetty Wainthropp Investigates".

He starred as Charlie Pace on the first three seasons of the hit TV series, "Lost".
