Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What feature of Gregory's house do all his friends like?

Answer: Stairs

In the beginning of the movie, we hear Greg talk about his house. He goes into real depth on the features of his home. He tells about the moulding that is all original to the home. He tells about the hand carved fireplace. He also mentions the stairs and how everyone comments on how easy they are to climb.

They have a very slight incline and are easy to manuever. During one scene, when Arthur is helping Bobby (Bobby had cut his foot on a broken milk bottle that shattered on the floor), Arthur bandages Bobby's foot and then leads him upstairs.

While they climb the stairs Arthur says, "I love these stairs". Bobby replies, "Everyone says that".
2. What cartoon image is on Buzz's shirt while he plays in the volleyball game?

Answer: Nancy

Buzz is quite the eccentric in both his mannerisms and clothing. This is most apparent when he plays in the volleyball game in bright red shorts and a Nancy t-shirt. Nancy is a cartoon character from the 1970s. It is also a term used to describe one's demeanor as feminine, especially a man's demeanor, i.e. he is such a nancy boy. While he plays the game with Perry, against Gregory and Arthur, he always seems to miss the ball. He cheers Perry on, but when the ball comes to him he just can't hit it. Perry gets upset with Buzz and chases him around the net. Buzz continues to miss the ball. Perry finally has enough of Buzz and switches teams. Buzz says, "It is like gym class all over again". Gregory, being a loving, compassionate, and patient person, shows Buzz how to hit the ball. Buzz says to Perry, "See how I respond to basic human kindness?" The guys continue to play the game and Buzz raises his voice in excitement. Perry tells Buzz to keep his voice down. Buzz responds, "Why? We are in the middle of nowhere". This is a very true statement as Greg's house is in the country and we see no signs of neighbors at all.

Jason Alexander plays the lovable eccentric, Buzz. Jason is probably best known for his role of George on "Seinfeld". Jason has appeared in many movies as well as Broadway plays. I really enjoyed him in the Whitney Houston produced "Rogers and Hammersteins' Cinderella". It was an ABC Disney special. Jason is also a Tony Award winning actor. He won Best Actor in a Musical for Jerome Robbins' "Broadway".
3. What singer does Buzz hope that one day nobody will know?

Answer: Madonna

The guys are sitting around the dinner table and Buzz is serving dessert. He does an impression of Gertrude Lawrence. Buzz gets upset when no one knows who he is doing. He says, "I don't know why I bother to perfect an impression of Gertrude Lawrence". Gertrude Lawrence is a British actress. John says they know who she is, they just don't care. Buzz is upset by this remark because he believes John is a subject of the United Kingdom. John informs them he has taken up United States citizenship. Buzz talks to the guys about the state of the American musical and how it has him upset. He starts talking about Julie Andrews and Ramon asks who that is. He says to Ramon, "Should have seen that one coming". Ramon just smiles and shakes his head. Buzz says he longs for the day when no one knows who Madonna is.

Madonna is of course a pop legend icon. She first hit the scene with the band The Breakfast Club. She broke away from them quickly to pursue a solo career. Madonna is a very controversial artist; she has done things on stage that would make even the weirdest amongst us blush.
4. Who does John Glover play?

Answer: Both

John does an amazing job with the dual roles. He plays John, the pianist, the one nobody really likes, except Gregory. He also does James the lovable eccentric who has AIDS. In contrast James is loved almost instantly. The only thing they have in common is they are gay and both have dated Buzz. Perry deems them John the Foul and James the Fair. John is a very outspoken individual. This is one of the reasons nobody really cares for him. He and Perry are constantly at odds, probably because they are similiar in their opinions and attitudes. Both John and Perry speak their mind, whether it is correct to do so or not. Most of the time they think without speaking and their comments hurt those around them. Perry makes a racially motivated comment at the dinner table, which causes Arthur, his boyfriend, to leave the table. During that same dinner John manages to make everyone angry with his profanity. While on the other hand James, gets on with all the guys immediately. He is a loving and caring individual who takes time out to get to know the guys well. He and Buzz hit it off right away.

John Glover is one of my favorite actors. He plays the role of Lionel Luthor in "Smallville". John is also a Tony Award winning actor. He won for Featured Actor in a Play for his role in "Love Valour Compassion", the same role he plays in the movie. John is also from my home state of Maryland.
5. Which of these have never been a couple?

Answer: Gregory and Arthur

Perry and Arthur celebrate their 14th Anniversary with the guys at Greg's house. Perry gives a heartfelt speech on how much he loves Arthur. Perry becomes very teary eyed during the speech. When it is Arthur's turn he simply says, "Ditto". He then takes Perry up and dances a slow dance with him.

John and Buzz were a couple for six months tops. Buzz tells James it happened when John first moved to the U.S.A. It didn't last because John doesn't know how to love. James then says somebody better tell Ramon.

It is never clear how long Bobby and Greg stay together. We do know at some point in time they break up. When the guys are telling the story of the way they die, Bobby says he doesn't want to know. He says he won't be with Greg; his partner's name will be Luke. This for me is the odd couple as Greg is my favorite character and Bobby my least favorite.

Greg and Arthur are just friends. They have never been an item and never will be. Perry and Arthur are together until their deaths.
6. What is Bobby's handicap?

Answer: Blind

In the beginning sequence, we see Bobby reading a Braille book. Perry and Arthur come to pick him up and take him home to Greg's house. In the car ride, Perry asks Bobby if he knows what they look like. He says, "In my mind's eye you two look like bookends". When he arrives home he has a ritual of going to the garden. Bobby likes to smell the flowers and touch the trees. While he is feeling a tree, Ramon comes up and startles him. Bobby tells Ramon he is not crazy, just thankful for all this beauty. Ramon excuses himself, but doesn't leave. Bobby leans against a tree and Ramon is hidden behind the tree. Ramon reaches around and touches Bobby's hand. This starts the onset of their affair.

Justin Kirk plays the role of Bobby. I think he did a wonderful job with the role. Out of the entire cast he is the one I like the least, character-wise . It seems to me when he confesses to Greg about the affair it isn't heartfelt. It's almost like it wasn't a big deal he cheated.
7. Perry cheats on Arthur.

Answer: False

We find out, through a conversation Bobby has with Arthur, that Arthur cheated once. Bobby asks Arthur if Perry knows. He tells Bobby he told Perry about the cheating. He also warns Bobby against an affair with Ramon. He tells Bobby things are great between him and Perry, but they are not the same. It seems Arthur is thinking of cheating again with Ramon. We see Arthur in the bathroom mirror practicing pickup lines. He also swims out to the raft Ramon is on to flirt with him. Ramon quickly leaves the raft and swims ashore.

Arthur is played by John Benjamin Hickey. John was born in Plano, Texas in 1963. John, in my opinion, is a wonderful actor. He reprises his role in the film from the original Broadway play. I really enjoyed his sitcom where he plays one of two men raising a daughter. The daughter meets a boy and they become engaged. The fun begins when the families start interacting with one another.
8. How does Ramon die?

Answer: plane crash

During the rehearsal of "Swan Lake", the guys tell us how they die. Perry dies watching "Gone With the Wind". Arthur dies two years later on a bus. He says, "Without Perry it doesn't matter anyway". Ramon dies on a plane headed to Massachusetts. It is a small plane. He is late for a recital with his troupe. He says he dies with a pilot he never looks twice at.

Ramon is played by Randy Becker. Randy has also appeared in another of my favorite films "Lie Down With Dogs". He plays a leech in this film. Randy attended and graduated from Brown University.
9. Perry participates in the benefit.

Answer: False

The first night the guys are together preparing dinner, Greg asks Perry to participate in an AIDS benefit. Greg tells Perry they will be dancing to "Swan Lake" in full tutus. Perry says that men in drag turn his stomach and there is no way he and Arthur will participate. In true Perry style he says the wrong thing in front of Buzz. He says he is sick of AIDS benefits. Buzz replies, "So are the people they are for." Greg tells Perry never mind he will find someone else. Perry is left there feeling ashamed of what he has said. A few months pass by and the guys are back at Greg's house. Perry hears John playing "Swan Lake" on the piano. He realizes they are going on with the benefit. The guys are upstairs rehearsing along with Arthur. Perry sits on the sidelines and watches them dance. They ask Perry how they look and he says, "You look like you are having fun".

Stephen Spinella plays the role of Perry. Spinella, like Jason Alexander, is a Tony Award winning actor. He won a Best Actor Tony for "Angels in America". Stephen has also guest starred in my favorite sitcom "Will and Grace". He plays a flight attendant. He hits on Will to make his boyfriend, also a flight attendant jealous.
10. What CD does Buzz pack to take to Greg's?

Answer: Cabaret

During the opening scene we see the guys packing their bags for the weekend at Gregory's. Perry and Arthur pack very neatly. John puts a few clothing items in the bag, but also puts in a couple of cartons of cigarettes and handcuffs. We see Buzz packing his bag, he puts "Evita" in his bag. He also places his medication in the bag. We see Buzz on the bus on the way to Greg's house and he is singing "Cabaret". He tries to talk to the guy next to him, but the guy clearly doesn't want to. Buzz puts his headphones back on and sings the rest of the trip to the house.

"Cats" was of course the longest running Broadway musical until "Les Miserables" surpassed it. "Cats" was nominated for eleven Tony Awards in 1982 and won seven. "Phantom of the Opera" is another Andrew Lloyd Webber production. The original version stars Michael Crawford, a true Broadway legend. "Annie" ran on Broadway for six consecutive years. It has also toured the country and I saw it for the first time in 2007. "Cabaret" is a long running Broadway musical. It is also a feature length movie starring Michael York and Liza Minelli.
