Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What filming technique was used to animate the creature in "20 Million Miles to Earth" (1957)?

Answer: stop-motion animation

Ray Harryhausen was the master of stop-motion animation. His work appeared in numerous motion pictures. The method involved manipulating a pliable model by hand, exposing a frame of film, then moving the model a tiny bit and repeating the process. The result is, when the film is screened, that the model appears to move.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is NOT?

Answer: The Day of the Zombie

"The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951) is an outstanding science fiction film starring Michael Rennie as a spaceman named Klaatu and his robot sidekick Gort. "The Day the Sky Exploded" (1958) is about a cluster of asteroids headed for a fatal collision with Earth. "Day the World Ended" (1955) is a post-apocalyptic survival film. "Day of the Zombie" is a video game played on MicroSoft platforms but not a 1950s science-fiction horror movie.
3. How did the monster in "Bride of the Gorilla" (1951) become what it was?

Answer: a voodoo curse placed by a servant

Barney, who works at a rubber plantation, falls in love with the owner's wife and kills the owner to take over both the woman and the business. This murder is observed by a servant, loyal to the original owner, who places a voodoo curse on Barney. The curse changes him into a were-ape, a gorilla who savages the locals by night.

In the local native tongue, according to the film, such monsters are called "sukaras."
4. Which actor, probably best known for his role as Artemus Gordon in the TV series "The Wild, Wild West" (1965-1969) played Dr. Jeremy 'Jerry' Spensser in "The Colossus of New York" (1958)?

Answer: Ross Martin

Ross Martin (1920-1981) was a multi-talented actor who worked extensively on radio, the stage, television and in motion pictures. In addition to his best-known role in "The Wild, Wild West," he played the voice of Doctor Paul Williams in "Sealab 2020" (1972) and several voices in the animated TV series "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kids" (1973).

He was graduated from CCNY magna cum laude and earned a law degree from National University (now Georgetown). He was also a concert violinist.
5. There are five sorts of characters introduced by "The Wild Women of Wongo" (1958): beautiful women, ugly women, handsome men, ugly men, and who else?

Answer: ape-like gorilla-men

According to the explanation provided by the character Mother Nature in the back story, she created beautiful women and ugly men to live on Wongo and ugly women and handsome men to live on Goona. The gorilla-like ape men came from across the sea, exploring and lusting.
6. Where was the science fiction horror movie "The Head" (1959) made?

Answer: West Germany

The German horror film "Die Nackte und der Satan" was filmed in Munich, Bavaria. The motion picture was filmed in the German language. The title translates literally to "The Naked Woman and the Devil." It was also released variously as "A Head for the Devil" and "The Screaming Head."
7. Which British actor, probably best known as the voice of the Sorting Hat in the Harry Potter movies, played photo-journalist Howard Meade in "The Gamma People" (1956)?

Answer: Leslie Phillips

Leslie Phillips (b. 1924) was both an actor and an author. He did a great deal of voice acting, which was how he was cast as the voice of the Sorting Hat in "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" (2001), "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" (2002), and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" (2011). In "The Gamma People," he played Howard Meade, a news photographer.
8. For what is Richard Fleischer best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: directing

Richard O. Fleischer (1916-2006) was an American motion picture director. He directed "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" (1954). In his long career, he also directed "The Vikings" (1958), "Fantastic Voyage" (1966), "Doctor Dolittle" (1967), "Tora! Tora! Tora!" (1970), "Soylent Green" (1973), "Mandingo" (1975), "Conan the Destroyer" (1984), "Red Sonja" (1985), and "Call from Space" (1989).
9. Where was "The Werewolf" (1956) set?

Answer: the fictional town of Mountaincrest

In order to depict the small, rural mountain community of Mountaincrest, the film "The Werewolf" was shot in the San Bernardino National Forest in California. Many of the exterior scenes are recognizable as being in the actual town of Big Bear Lake.
10. In the terms of the motion picture "4D Man" (1959), what does "4D" mean?

Answer: one object passing through another

Electrodynamics scientist Tony Nelson discovers a means by which any object (including a person) can pass unharmed through another. This is achieved by compelling the atoms of both objects to occupy the same space at the same time. Unfortunately, using the process on a human causes the person to age rapidly, unless they penetrate another and draw off their life force, thereby killing them.
