Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before Glenn Manning became "The Amazing Colossal Man" in the 1957 motion picture, what was his occupation?

Answer: a lieutenant colonel in the US Army

Lt. Col. Glenn Manning commands troops at the detonation of a plutonium bomb at Desert Rock, Nevada. When a small plane crashes in the exposure zone, Manning bravely rescues the pilot but is thereby exposed to radiation. This burns his skin but also prompts his body to grow. He becomes sixteen feet tall overnight and tops out around 60 to 70 feet ultimately.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is NOT?

Answer: The Dragon People

"The Alligator People" (1959) is about a man medically mutated into an alligator. "The Gamma People" (1956) is about children turned into robots by means of gamma rays. "Invasion of the Animal People" (1959) is about a beautiful woman kidnapped by a hideous alien monster in Lapland. "The Dragon People of Planet Draco" is a 2021 novel by Jerry Valdez but "The Dragon People" is not a science-fiction horror film of the 1950s.
3. What kind of creature was the monster in "Rodan" (1956)?

Answer: a gigantic pterosaur

Scientists obtain a photograph of the creature's wing and it matches a drawing of a prehistoric pteranodon. This is a pterodactyl-like flying dinosaur. One of the scientists names the monster Rodan. There are actually two of these monsters. The scientists determine that the creatures' wingspan is about 270 meters and their weight around 100 tons.
4. Who played Tommy Nelson / The Invisible Man in "Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man" (1951)?

Answer: Arthur Franz

Arthur Franz (1920-2006) was an American actor with credits on stage, screen and television. He appeared in several horror and science fiction films including "Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man" (1951), "Flight to Mars" (1951), "Invaders from Mars" (1953), "Back from the Dead" (1957), "The Flame Barrier" (1958), "Monster on the Campus" (1958), "The Atomic Submarine" (1959), and "King Monster" (1976). His role in "Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man" is as often invisible as visible.
5. Was "Terror in the Haunted House" (1958) also released with the title "My World Dies Screaming"(1961)?

Answer: Yes

The original name of the film produced by William S. Edwards and directed by Harold Daniels was "My World Dies Screaming." This title was changed to "Terror in the Haunted House". "My World Dies Screaming" was the title under which the film was theatrically released in both the US and the UK.

The name was changed before a 1961 re-release in Los Angeles theatres. The movie was then withdrawn from further showings in theatres and marketed as part of a 22-film package for television by Allied Artists under the name "Terror in the Haunted House."
6. The motion picture "The Day The Earth Stood Still" (1951) is mentioned in the lyrics of the song "Science Fiction/Double Feature" from what movie?

Answer: The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

The motion picture "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" (1975) was an adaptation of the stage musical "The Rocky Horror Show" (1973). The opening and closing song (reprise) is "Science Fiction/Double Feature." It includes the lyric ""Michael Rennie was ill / 'The Day the Earth Stood Still', / but he told us where we stand." The lyrics also include references to "It Came From Outer Space" (1953), "Tarantula" (1955), "Forbidden Planet"(1956), "Night of the Demon" (1957), and "When Worlds Collide" (1951).
7. In "The Four Skulls of Jonathan Drake" (1959), what does Dr. Emil Zurich do to the heads of the male members of the Drake family when the men turn sixty?

Answer: He shrinks them.

Dr. Zurich takes the heads of the male members of the Drake family, brought to him by his homicidal servant Zutai, and shrinks them. He removes the skulls, stitches their lips shut, and packs the heads with warm sand, after the fashion of "The Cult of Headless Men."
8. For what is Faith Domergue best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: acting

Faith Marie Domergue (1924-1999) acted in motion pictures and television from the age of sixteen. She was "discovered" by Howard Hughes and maintained an on-and-off meretricious relationship with him. She appeared in four science fiction/horror films in 1955: "Cult of the Cobra," "This Island Earth," "It Came from Beneath the Sea," and "Timeslip" which was also called "The Atomic Man." In later life, she also appeared in "Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet" (1965), "Blood Legacy" (1971), "So Evil, My Sister" (1974), and "The House of Seven Corpses" (1974).
9. Even traveling at the speed of light, it took the United Planets starship C-57D over a year to reach which destination in "Forbidden Planet" (1956)?

Answer: Altair IV

The mission of the crew of C-57 was to discover the fate of a mission to Altair IV some twenty years before. The previous spaceship, the Bellerophon, had not been heard from since. Altair-IV is a desert-like planet with a green sky; its atmosphere supports human life.

The exterior shots were all done indoors on a sound stage at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in Culver City. An enormous painted cyclorama filled the building.
10. How do the people trapped on the island, first by a hurricane and then by the deadly creatures surrounding them, ultimately get off the island in "The Killer Shrews" (1959)?

Answer: by duckwalking inside 50-gallon metal drums

Trapped inside a compound with a ten-foot tall fence, the survivors need to reach the beach and their boat. They find some 50-gallon steel drums, cut eye holes in them, lash them together, and use them as armour while they duckwalk to the beach. Although they are set upon by the shrews, they succeed in waddling to the beach where they enter the water and swim to the boat.
