Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How did the makers of "Planet Outlaws" (1953) film rocket ships so they appear to fly?

Answer: They were suspended on strings like puppets.

The special effects seen in 1953's "Planet Outlaws" were actually filmed in 1938-1939. Rocket ship miniature models were suspended on strings, much as a marionette would be, and photographed in front of a painted set. The special effects artists rigged each of the space ships with a device to imitate the blast powering the rocket.

The appearance of reality suffered in that the smoke emitted goes up while the sparks emitted go down!
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is *NOT*?

Answer: Black Magic Madam

Boris Karloff starred in "The Black Castle" (1952). Toshio Hosokawa starred in "Black Cat Mansion" (1958). Basil Rathbone, Lon Chaney Jr., John Carradine, Bela Lugosi, and Tor Johnson all appeared in "The Black Sleep" (1956). "Black Magic Woman" was a hit song for both Fleetwood Mac (1968) and Santana (1970). There was no 1950s movie named "Black Magic Madam".
3. How was the monster in "Giant from the Unknown" (1958) killed in the end?

Answer: He fell off a bridge.

The sheriff, local men and the principal characters in the film pursue the Diablo Giant through the woods. They box him in a canyon but he escapes and heads for the Old Mill. Wayne Brooks, played by Ed Kemmer, catches up with Vargas at the Old Mill. Vargas tries to kill Brooks with his ax but misses.

The giant sees that others have arrived at the mill and tries to escape by running across a narrow footbridge over a raging waterfall. He loses his footing and tumbles into the water to his death.
4. Who played Nobel-laureate scientist Dr. Arthur Carrington in "The Thing From Another World" (1951)?

Answer: Robert Cornthwaite

Dr. Carrington is in charge of Polar Expedition Six at the North Pole. He reports the crash-landing of some sort of aircraft nearby which provokes the US Air Force to investigate. Carringon discovers that the craft was a flying saucer and that its pilot is an advanced form of vegetable man.

He wants to communicate with it, despite its taste for human blood. The scientist was played by Robert Cornthwaite who, years later, was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 1993 for this role.
5. In "On the Beach" (1959), what was the source of the Morse Code signal from the Pacific Coast of North America?

Answer: wind moving a Coke bottle against a telegraph key

The Sawfish arrives just south of San Diego to track down the mysterious Morse Code signal originating there. The boat's communications officer, Lt. Sunderstrom, dressed in an anti-radiation suit, goes ashore. In the radio room of an automatic power station, he finds the source. Wind blows through a broken window.

The window shade's pull cord has wrapped around the neck of a Coca Cola bottle. The bottle leans against the live telegraph key. Ocean breezes created random dots and dashes.
6. Who directed "Battle in Outer Space" (1959)?

Answer: Ishirô Honda

Ishirô Honda directed the original "Godzilla'' (1954) and most of the Godzilla movies thereafter. He also directed other Japanese kaiju movies such as "Varan the Unbelievable" (1958).
7. How did Major John Corcoran, played by Michael Emmet, die in "Night of the Blood Beast" (1958)?

Answer: suicide

Major Corcoran is an advocate for the alien, urging that the others try to understand it and its mission rather than react in fear and kill it. From what the creature tells the others, he determines that its goal is to take over the Earth. Knowing that the fetuses within him will die if he dies, Corcoran commits suicide with a knife.
8. For what is Aline Towne best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: acting

The American film and television actress Aline Waller, known as Aline Towne, (1919-1996) was highly regarded for her leading roles in the Republic Pictures serials of the 1950s. She also appeared in the television programmes "Lassie", "Leave It to Beaver", "Sea Hunt", "Wagon Train", "Maverick", "The Lone Ranger", and "The Donna Reed Show".

Her film credits (mostly compilations of serials) included "The Invisible Monster" (1950), "Radar Men from the Moon" (1952), "Zombies of the Stratosphere" (1952), and "Gog" (1954).
9. Where is the movie "The Revenge of Frankenstein" (1958) mostly set?

Answer: Carlsbrück, Germany

"The Revenge of Frankenstein" begins where "The Curse of Frankenstein" (1957) left off: in a prison in Germany where Baron Frankenstein is about to be executed for his sins. The baron avoids the guillotine and enters charity medical practice in Carlsbrück, Germany. At the end of the film, there are also scenes in London.
10. In "Teenage Cave Man" (1958), the Symbol Maker's son invents what useful device?

Answer: bow and arrow

While the Symbol Maker's son is hunting alone in the jungle across the river, he flees a monster. He bumps his head on a tree limb and lies unconscious for a time. Upon waking, he has the idea for a primitive bow and arrow. He uses his weapon to kill a stag (and later to kill The Black-Bearded One, who is in serious need of killing).
