Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what sense is there an "attack" in "Attack of the Puppet People" (1958)?

Answer: There really isn't.

While the people shrunk by Mister Franz are not pleased to have been dealt with in this manner, they do not really attack him so much as struggle to regain their original size. They are attacked by a rat, a cat and a dog. The film's distributors thought the title would play better with teenage drive-in audiences if the word "attack" was in it.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is NOT?

Answer: The Curse of the Cobra

"The Curse of Frankenstein" (1957) was Hammer Films first colour horror flick. The film starred Peter Cushing as Victor Frankenstein and Christopher Lee as the monster. "The Curse of the Aztec Mummy" (1957) was the second in a three-movie series involving Popoca the Aztec Mummy, all shot at the same time. "Curse of the Demon" (1957) is a British scary movie, also released as "Night of the Demon".

There is a video game called "Curse of the Cobra" released in 2021. There is an amusement ride called the Cobra's Curse at Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida.

But there was no motion picture named "Curse of the Cobra" made in the 1950s.
3. What sort of scary monster was portrayed in "The Aztec Mummy" (1957)?

Answer: a mummified Aztec warrior

Popoca, an ancient Aztec warrior, is caught in a forbidden relationship with Xochitl, a temple virgin. She is put to death but he is mummified alive and compelled to guard her remains and a secret treasure forever. When explorers/looters invade the tomb, Popoca awakens and pursues them.
4. Which actor, better known as Davy Crockett on "Disneyland" and as "Daniel Boone" on NBC TV (1964-70), played Alan Crotty, a mental ward patient, in "Them!" (1954)?

Answer: Fess Parker

When Walt Disney was casting the role of Davy Crockett for a mini-series on "Disneyland", he watched "Them!" in order to see James Arness in it. Instead, Disney was impressed by young Fess Parker (1924-2010) playing an inmate in a mental ward in the movie. Crotty was a small-plane pilot who claimed to have seen giant insects flying nearby and was placed in a mental ward because officials believed him to be insane.
5. Where did the monsters in "The Brain Eaters" (1958) come from?

Answer: under the surface of the Earth

The first assumption of those who discover the conical metal "ship" just outside of Riverdale, Illinois is that it is a space vehicle which landed there. Closer examination suggests that it is a sort of drill which dug its way up from a subterranean place. This is confirmed by Professor Cole who explains the parasites it contains to Dr. Kettering.
6. With the exception of a few underwater scenes, who directed "Attack of the Crab Monsters" (1957)?

Answer: Roger Corman

Roger Corman produced, directed or produced and directed a remarkable number of motion pictures. His personal best was in 1957 when he created nine films: "The Undead", "Carnival Rock and Rock All Night", "Naked Paradise", "Sorority Girl", "Teenage Doll", "The Saga of the Viking Women and Their Voyage to the Waters of the Great Sea Serpent", "Not of This Earth", and "Attack of the Crab Monsters".
7. In "Crash of Moons" (1954), who is the young boy who is part of the team of Rocky Jones, Vena Ray, Winky, and Professor Newton?

Answer: Bobby

Child actor Robert Lyden portrayed Bobby (last name unknown) who was a Junior Space Ranger and often a member of the crew of Rocky's space ships, the Orbit Jet and the Silver Moon. He was the ward of Professor Newton but the reason for this relationship is never disclosed.

The whole group -- Rocky, Vena, Winky and the professor -- act in loco parentis and take some responsibility for his nurture, education and upbringing.
8. For what is John Agar best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: acting

John George Agar Jr. (1921-2002) acted in both television and motion pictures. Many of his films were in the genre of horror and science fiction: "Tarantula" (1955), "Revenge of the Creature" (1955), "The Mole People" (1956), "The Daughter of Dr. Jekyll" (1957), "The Brain from Planet Arous" (1957), "Attack of the Puppet People" (1958), "Invisible Invaders" (1959), "Curse of the Swamp Creature" (1966), "Zontar, the Thing from Venus" (1966), "Women of the Prehistoric Planet" (1966), "King Kong" (1976), "The Vampire Hunters Club" (2001) and "The Naked Monster" (2005).

He was Shirley Temple's first husband.
9. Where is "Monster from Green Hell" (1958) set?

Answer: central Africa

Green Hell is the name natives use to describe a place in central Africa where no one goes. Filming took place at Bronson Caves in Griffith Park, Los Angeles, doubling for central Africa.
10. In "Tarantula" (1955), what are the puddles of white goo found in the desert by the men investigating the deaths of several people and some cattle?

Answer: tarantula venom

The local doctor, Matt Hastings, notices puddles of a thick white liquid at Andy Anderson's ranch where some cattle were killed and picked clean. Dr. Hastings investigates the scene of a wrecked truck the next day and finds similar pools. He collects and sends samples of the ooze to the Arizona Agricultural Institute in Phoenix which identifies it as tarantula venom.
