Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "The Mysterians" (1957), what are the two demands made by the aliens?

Answer: a plot of land and Earth women for wives

Five scientists are invited to a meeting with the Mysterians at which the aliens demand two things: a two-mile radius plot of land and the right to marry Earth women. The latter is necessary because, 100,000 years before, a nuclear war on their home planet Mysteroid, then the fifth planet from the sun, was rendered uninhabitable and the people mutated and deformed.

When the Japanese government refuses, the Mysterians up their demand to a 75-mile radius plot. They have already begun kidnapping Earth women for breeding.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is NOT?

Answer: Teenage Demons

"The Hideous Sun Demon" (1959) is about an accidentally-irradiated man who is turned into a reptilian monster by sunlight. "Night of the Demon" (1957) is a British film about a satanic cult. "Curse of the Demon" (1957) is the title under which "Night of the Demon" was released in the United States.

There was a song released by Foxy Shazam in 2010 called "Teenage Demon Baby". Gabriel Tuggle wrote "Teenage Demons: A Short Story" in 2018. There was no motion picture called "Teenage Demons" made in the 1950s, despite the many other movies featuring teenage creatures of all sorts made at that time.
3. Who are the scary monsters in "Zombies of the Stratosphere" (1952), re-released as "Satan's Satellites" (1958)?

Answer: Martians

Desperate Martians come to Earth intending to save their own planet by setting off a hydrogen bomb to drive Earth out of its orbit, thereby moving Mars closer to the Sun. This, they say, is necessary because their planet is freezing and dying. The Martians, led by Marex, partner with an Earth scientist, Dr. Harding, and two mobsters to further their plans.

Despite the movie's original title, there are no zombies.
4. Who played the servant Voltan in "The Strange Door" (1951)?

Answer: Boris Karloff

Boris Karloff (1887-1969) plays Voltan, manservant to Sire Alain de Maletroit in "The Strange Door". Karloff's role is more of a supporting part than a leading one but his name on the playbill added considerable popular appeal. He foils the plans of his master to kill Edmond, Denis and Blanche but is fatally wounded in the process, giving the key to their freedom to them with his last breath.
5. In "The Tingler" (1959), in order to induce fear in research subjects, Dr. Chapin injects people with which drug?

Answer: Lysergic Acid (LSD) 25

The researcher wants to create intense fear in test subjects in order to learn more about the reactions of the tingler within them. He reads a paper entitled "Fright Effects Induced by Injection of Lysergic Acid LSD25". The film's screenwriter Robb White III (1909-1990) had used LSD at UCLA (it was legal at the time) and wove his experiences into the script.
6. "Mysterious Island" (1951) was first made as a theatrical serial.

Answer: True

The 1951 production of "Mysterious Island" was produced as a 15-part theatrical serial by Columbia Pictures. It was based loosely on Jules Verne's "The Mysterious Island" but with some imaginative additions unimagined by the French author. Episode titles included "Lost in Space", "Sinister Savages", "Wild Man at Large", "Menace of the Mercurians", "Shrine of the Silver Bird", "Mystery of the Mine", "Men from Tomorrow", and "The Last of the Mysterious Island".
7. In "The Mole People" (1956), what is it about the Eye of Ishtar by which it is used to execute people?

Answer: sunlight

The Sumerians have lived so long underground that they have become albinos. They are so sensitive to light that they are blinded by the flashlights carried by the archaeologists. In order to maintain their population at a level supportable by their mushroom crop, the Sumerians expose victims to natural light coming from the surface which burns them to a crisp.

The explorers use the shaft of the Eye of Ishtar to lead them back to the surface.
8. For what is Melissa Stribling best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: acting

Melissa Stribling (1926-1992), a Scottish film and television actress, played the part of Mina Holmwood in the Hammer horror film "Dracula" (1958). Her performance was as the erotically-moved victim of the vampire (played by Christopher Lee). This interpretation, endorsed by the director Terence Fisher, was a first in British horror films.

Other films in which she appeared include "Ghost Ship" (1952), "Journey into Darkness" (1968), and "Crucible of Terror" (1971). She also played roles on British television, e.g. "Benny Hill" (1963).
9. Where is "The Colossus of New York" (1958) set?

Answer: New York City

This motion picture opens with a view of the United Nations General Assembly Building as seen from the East River. Dr. Jeremy Spensser is struck and killed by a truck at New York's Idlewild Airport (which is now JFK). The Colossus returns to the UN building for its final homicidal rampage and dies there.
10. What sort of monsters appear in "The Unknown Terror" (1957)?

Answer: fungus-covered monster men

Explorers, searching for the Cave of the Dead, discover a cave lined with parasitic fungal growth. It is inhabited by foamy-looking fungus-covered monster men. They can be held at bay with a flaming torch. Their cave is littered with the skeletons of their victims.
