Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Attack of the Crab Monsters" (1957), what happens to Seaman Tate as he and his shipmates are bringing supplies ashore in a rubber raft?

Answer: He falls overboard and is decapitated.

The sailors need to ferry supplies from the seaplane to the shore. They load them into two rafts and are bringing them ashore when Seaman Tate, played by Charles B. Griffith, falls overboard. Lt. Quinlan, played by Ed Nelson, orders him brought back onto the launch but, when they haul him out of the water, it is without his head!
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is not?

Answer: The Man from Beyond Space

In "Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man" (1951), the man was invisible. In "The Amazing Colossal Man" (1957), the man was colossal. In "Atom Man vs. Superman" (1950), the man was a very evil wicked person. There does not appear to have been a movie called "The Man from Beyond Space."
3. What sort of monster(s) appear(s) in "The Cult of the Cobra" (1955)?

Answer: a woman who turns into a snake

Six foolish American servicemen witness a secret ritual of a snake cult. They are discovered and the High Lamian priestess curses them saying "The Cobra Goddess will avenge herself. One by one you will die!" Back in New York, the group meets Lisa Moya, played by Faith Domergue, who has the power to change into a cobra. She kills them off, one by one, until she is killed herself.
4. Who played Retik, Ruler of the Moon, in "Radar Men from the Moon" (1952)?

Answer: Roy Barcroft

Commando Cody, played by George Wallace, flies his rocket ship to the Moon to discover the source of disruptive and damaging rays being directed at the Earth. There he confronts Retick, played by Roy Barcroft, who claims to be the ruler of the Moon. Retik tells Commando Cody that, armed with weapons powered by "lunarium" (which is more potent than uranium), they will take over the Earth and occupy it.

As Retik's agents on Earth fail in their assignments, he flies to Earth to take command but is blown up by one of his own ray weapons.
5. How were the creatures in "Monster From Green Hell" (1957) finally killed?

Answer: They died in a volcanic eruption.

The party searching for the wasps' nest in Africa comes upon the volcanic bowl of Mt. Virunga in which the queen and workers are living. The grenades they throw into the bowl are useless. The volcano, however, erupts and the pyroclastic material tossed into the air drags the wasps down into the lake of lava ... and they die.
6. Better known as oil baron J. R. Ewing in "Dallas" (1978-1991) and as USAF Major Anthony Nelson in "I Dream of Jeannie" (1965-1970), who directed the 1972 sequel to "The Blob" (1958)?

Answer: Larry Hagman

Larry Martin Hagman (1931-2012) distinguished himself as an actor on both film and television, as a director and a producer. Hagman directed "Beware! The Blob" in 1972. The film was variously titled "Son of Blob," "The Blob II," and "The Blob Returns." In it, a portion of the original blob is excavated in the Arctic and brought to Los Angeles where (of course) it escapes. Horrendous ingestion ensues.
7. What sort of monster was the alien in "The Astounding She-Monster" (1957)?

Answer: a radioactive woman in a skin-tight suit

An alien visitor, played by Shirley Kilpatrick, lands on Earth. She is a beautiful blonde with scary eyebrows, mute, dressed in an exceptionally-tight shimmering metallic suit and high heels. When she touches someone, they quickly die of "radium poisoning."
8. For what is Virgil Vogel best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: directing

Virgil William Vogel (1919-1996) began his career as a film editor, became a motion picture director, and then moved on to direct television programmes for decades. His first film was "The Mole People" (1956), followed by "The Land Unknown" (1957). In 1959, he was signed to direct a Swedish-American movie initially called "Rymdinvasion i Lappland" ("Space Invasion of Lapland") which was then re-edited for release in the United States as "Invasion of the Animal People."
9. Where is the motion picture "She Gods of Shark Reef" (1958) set?

Answer: an uncharted tropical island

The Johnston brothers are shipwrecked on an uncharted tropical island where they are saved by a tribe of beautiful women pearl divers. The film was shot on the Hawaiian island of Kaua'i at and around the Coco Palms Resort. The thatched huts of that famous resort stood in for the island women's huts. Director Roger Corman arranged for the cast and crew to stay at the resort during filming in return for an on-screen-credit in the film. Three years later, Elvis Presley stayed there while he was filming "Blue Hawaii."
10. Two different witnesses looked through the visor of the creature's helmet in "Phantom from Space" (1953) and said he has neither face nor head.

Answer: True

Pete Darrow, played by Burt Arnold, who was present when the Phantom killed Betty Evans' husband, gave a statement to the police that the creature did not have a head. The watchman at the oil refinery, played by Michael Mark, identified the suit the Phantom was wearing and said the wearer had no face.
