Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Queen of Outer Space" (1958), the crew of the spaceship which crash lands on Venus discovers that the atmosphere is breathable and that there is a jungle growing. What is scientifically wrong with this?

Answer: The surface of Venus is not life supporting.

The atmosphere of Venus is primarily carbon dioxide and nitrogen. The surface temperature is 740 K (467 °C, 872 °F). The surface atmospheric pressure is 93 bar (1,350 psi) which is about the pressure under 900 meters/3000 feet of water on Earth. There is a sort of greenhouse effect on Venus -- it rains sulfuric acid constantly -- but this is not the sort of greenhouse in which plants grow. No breathing/no jungle.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is not?

Answer: Bride of the Bloodsucker

"The 30 Foot Bride of Candy Rock" (1959) is a science-fiction comedy starring Lou Costello without Bud Abbott."The Bride and the Beast" (1958) is an Ed Wood picture about a woman who regresses to her former gorilla self under hypnosis. "Bride of the Gorilla" (1951) is a science fiction and horror film with Raymond Burr and Lon Chaney Jr. in which Burr is the evil doer.

There is a Japanese manga series (2000-2007) by Saki Okuse and Aki Shimizu called "Blood Sucker: Legend of Zipangu." There is a 2022 novel by Bella Jacobs called "My Big Fat Bloodsucker Wedding: A Paranormal Rom Com with Bite." There is a 2018 novel by Susan G. Charles called "Blood Sucker: A Vampire Paranormal Romance." There does not appear to be a movie of the 1950s called "Bride of the Bloodsucker."
3. What is/are the scary monster(s) in "She Gods of Shark Reef" (1958)?

Answer: the shark God Tangaroa

Chris, the good brother, says to Queen Pua, "I thought I saw something just inside the reef" to which she responds, "That is home of shark god Tangaroa. That place taboo. Shark god angry long time now. Bring many bad storms, much bad fortune." Chris replies, "Well he certainly didn't bring us any luck. Is there anything we can do to get him in a better humor?" and the queen answers "Tangaroa ... angry." The two brothers learn that the women of the island are members of a shark cult which sacrifices virgins to the sharks to appease them.
4. In "Tarantula" (1955), which character/actor was the one whose face melted and slid down on one side of his head?

Answer: Prof. Gerald Deemer/Leo G. Carroll

When the growth serum is given to humans, it causes acromegaly, which normally takes years to disfigure a person but occurs in hours as a result of the drug. Acromegaly causes the head, hands and feet to grow abnormally large. Professor Deemer is accidentally injected with the potion and one side of his face grows and appears to be sliding down his head.
5. In "Attack of the Puppet People" (1958), what occurs with Tommy, Mister Franz' black house cat?

Answer: He is miniaturized by Mister Franz' machine.

Once Mister Franz has reduced Bob and Sally, he explains the scientific process of miniaturization to them. High frequency vibrations are used to reduce the atomic structure of living things. He sets out a saucer of milk for his cat Tommy and demonstrates. Tommy's size is now compatible with that of Bob and Sally, to whom he hands the kitty. Mister Franz thereafter keeps the cat in suspended animation in a matchbox.
6. On what source in another medium was the 1958 motion picture "From the Earth to the Moon" based?

Answer: Jules Verne novel(s)

"From the Earth to the Moon" is a film adaptation of Jules Verne's novels "De la Terre à la Lune" ("From the Earth to the Moon", 1865) and "Autour de la Lune" ("Around the Moon", 1869). The latter completes the former; they are often published together in one volume. Screenwriters Robert Blees and James Leicester broadly adapted from both novels, especially the first.
7. How is the monster in "I Was a Teenage Werewolf" (1957) finally killed?

Answer: He is shot by the police.

Tony returns to the medical office of Dr. Brandon and Dr. Wagner. They seek to record his transformation on film. A ringing telephone causes Tony to change and he kills both doctors. Detective Sgt. Donovan and Officer Chris Stanley break in and shoot Tony repeatedly. As Tony dies on the floor, his features return to those of his handsome normal teenage self. The sergeant concludes "It's not for man to interfere in the ways of God."
8. For what is Raymond Burr best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: acting

Raymond Burr (1917-1993) was a Canadian actor with a remarkably long career in both motion pictures and television (also radio). Aside from his television roles as Perry Mason and as Ironside, and aside from his movie roles such as "Rear Window" (1954), Burr played in the occasional horror and science fiction film.

He portrayed Steve Martin in "Godzilla, King of the Monsters!" (1956), and again in "Godzilla 1985" (1985). He also played the lead in 1951's "Bride of the Gorilla."
9. What is the setting of "The Astounding She-Monster" (1957)?

Answer: San Gabriel Mountains, California

A small gang of criminals kidnap heiress and socialite Margaret Chaffee in Los Angeles and transport her to the San Gabriel Mountains of California to await the ransom. The exteriors were shot in Frazier National Park outside of Los Angeles, in Griffith Park in Los Angeles, and in Brentwood, California.
10. In "Zombies of the Stratosphere" (1952), how does secret agent Larry Martin get quickly from place to place on Earth?

Answer: atomic-powered rocket backpack and helmet

The rocket-powered flying jacket and helmet were created for Commander Cody and introduced in the motion picture "King of the Rocket Men" (1949). It was then lent/used by Larry Martin in "Zombies of the Stratosphere." The atomic-powered rocket was affixed to a leather jacket. The outfit included a bullet-shaped aerodynamic helmet which looks a bit like a poorly-carved Hallowe'en pumpkin.
