Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

"Dead Poets Society" changed directors and possible actors many times before it finally brought together the combined talents of director Peter Weir and actor Robin Williams.

Weir was a renowned Australian director but this was only his third American film and Williams was known for his comedic not dramatic talent at that time but the two of them created magic in a movie that inspired a generation to "Seize the Day".

They were assisted in this by a cast of boys including Robert Sean Leonard, Ethan Hawke and Josh Charles who all went on to star in many projects. Matt Damon revealed in 2016 that both he and Ben Affleck auditioned for roles in the movie.

Weir apparently had all his young actors live together to help them to bond and asked them not to use modern slang or terminology even off screen during the filming. He also gave them reading material about what teenagers in the 1950s were interested in to help shape their characters.

The role of the vicar was played by the Reverend Simon Mein who was the actual vicar of St. Andrew's School in Delaware where the movie was filmed and all the extras were students from the local high schools.

There was a sequel planned with Ethan Hawke reprising his role of Todd Anderson and how he went on to follow in Keating's footsteps but the original cast were unavailable so it was cancelled.
Just as a matter of coincidence, Neil's (Robert Sean Leonard) dad wanted him to become a doctor and Leonard went on to play a doctor for 8 years on TVs "House M.D."

Neil predicts in the movie that Knox (Josh Charles) would become a lawyer and Charles goes on to play a lawyer for over 5 years on "The Good Wife" and Robin Williams was in a 1986 movie called "Seize the Day".

This speech itself is near the beginning of the movie, while Keating is trying to teach the boys that poetry is not about studying syntax and meter and cold dry facts. It is about how it makes you feel when you read it and a way to express yourself when you write it.

The boys attend a rigid prep school with a long history of tradition. They have very little choice about what they study, when or how they study it, Keating is giving them their first chance to think for themselves.

He acknowledges that their career paths are important but that they also need beauty and passion to make their lives complete and that they need to begin it now.

The whole crux of the statement is to live each day to the fullest, to find your passion and follow it with everything you have, because life is short and will be over before you know it. Only by doing this can you make your life have meaning and make your stay on earth worthwhile.

The quote from Whitman's poem illustrates this point. In it he struggles with the meaning of life and his desperation to find it. His final conclusion being that the meaning of life is to live.
