Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. He was an actor who was known for his dalliance with a pretty woman. Who also starred in the title role of the 1985 movie "King David"?

Answer: Richard Gere

There you go, Richard Gere typecast again.
David was one of the most complex characters of the Old Testament; a murderer and adulterer, yet God said he "was a man after my own heart".
Gere played David with Edward Woodward as Saul and Alice Krige as Bathsheba.
The movie was filmed in Italy. The scenery, though, could not save it from a savaging by the critics. His role earned Gere a Golden Raspberry.
Richard Gere starred opposite Julia Roberts in the 1990 movie "Pretty Woman" about a man who fell in love with a hooker.
2. Playing monarchs in 1950's movies seemed to attract an actor of, at the time, almost unique appearance. Who played King Solomon in the 1959 epic "Solomon and Sheba"?

Answer: Yul Brynner

Sheba was played by Gina Lollobrigida. Although the critics hated the film it was a box office success.
The bald-headed Brynner had played the King of Siam in "The King and I" in 1956.
3. Few were better at Biblical epics than Cecil B DeMille and his 1956 movie "The Ten Commandments" was no exception. Which actor, noted for a role in another quasi-Biblical tale, played Moses?

Answer: Charlton Heston

It was, in fact, DeMille's last movie; he died in January 1959. Anne Baxter and Edward G. Robinson were also among the cast leaders. The movie won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects and despite a running time of almost four hours, it was a box office success.
Heston played in several Biblical movies, and the reference in the question is to "Ben Hur" (1959).
4. According to whichever critic you read it was either "a novel, reverent and important film" or "a big windy bore". Which actor, of European extraction, played Jesus in "The Greatest Story Ever Told"?

Answer: Max von Sydow

Charlton Heston, Dorothy McGuire, Jose Ferrer and Telly Savalas also starred in the 1965 movie, with a bit-part by John Wayne. The critics were divided. The positive quote in the question was by "Variety" magazine and the negative one by "Playboy Magazine". "National Review" put it thus: "God is unlucky in 'The Greatest Story Ever Told'. His only begotten son turns out to be a bore."
Von Sydow was born in Sweden
5. The Biblical story of Samson and Delilah was one surely just ripe for Hollywood to exploit. The first outing on the silver screen was in 1922, but which famed beauty of Austrian origin starred as the femme fatale in 1949?

Answer: Hedy Lamarr

Hedy Lamarr was born in Vienna in 1913 and was regarded as one of the great Hollywood beauties of middle part of the 20th Century. Victor Mature played Samson.
6. Rita Hayworth was one of the great Hollywood beauties of her day. In 1953, she starred in the lead role of a movie based on one of the Bible's dancing women. Who was that woman?

Answer: Salome

Stewart Grainger and Charles Laughton also led the cast. While the movie was based on the person, it did not follow the exact "New Testament" outline of her story. The "New Testament" refers to Salome's dancing, and her part in the events that led to the death of John The Baptist.
7. He was the thief that the people of Jerusalem demanded Pilate release rather than Jesus. Who played Barrabas in a 1961 movie of the same name?

Answer: Anthony Quinn

Quinn played the title role in the movie, which was directed by Richard Fleischer and produced by Dino De Laurentiis
It also starred Arthur Kennedy, Jack Palance, Silvana Mangano, Harry Andrews and Ernest Borgnine.
8. In 1963, Stewart Granger starred in a movie that (loosely) told a Biblical tale of morality and huge destruction. What was it called?

Answer: The Last Days of Sodom and Gomorrah

Robert Aldrich directed the movie, which was called "Sodom and Gomorrah" outside of the USA. According to the Book of Genesis, Sodom and Gomorrah were cities destroyed by the wrath of God because their people were sinful and unrepentant. The movie was a tale of passion and treason in which the Prince of Sodom (Stanley Baker) plots to overthrow his sister (Anouk Aimee).

He discloses the plot to a slave girl (Scilla Gabel), but when the plot is discovered, she refuses to reveal her co-conspirators to the queen, who has her killed. Later Granger, as Lot, arrives and enters into a treaty with the queen.

He finds that he is being used by the queen. Two angels warn Lot that God plans to destroy the cities because the people are evil. Lot pleads with them to spare the cities and they agree if he can persuade 10 Sodomites to repent and leave the city with him. Does he succeed, well you'll have to look out for the movie to come around on TV or cable to find out...
9. Which 2004 movie, based on Biblical accounts, was a huge commercial success, yet prompted waves of controversy over the way that story was told?

Answer: The Passion of the Christ

Mel Gibson directed the movie and Jim Caviezel played Jesus. The movie concentrated on the last hours of Christ's life before the crucifixion. The movie takes the story from the betrayal of Christ by Judas Iscariot, through his trial and condemnation by Pilate to the crucifixion.

The critics claimed there were many departures from the Biblical account and denounced its violent scenes. While some Church authorities supported the movie, others condemned it and several Christian groups picketed cinemas at which it was shown.

As well as grossing over $600m, the movie won three Academy Awards.
10. First it was a stage show, but then it became a movie. Which film told the 'story' of Christ in song?

Answer: Jesus Christ Superstar

Norman Jewison directed the 1973 movie based on the stage musical and concept album by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Ted Neely starred as Christ. Both he and Carl Anderson (Judas) were nominated for Golden Globe awards. The movie told the story of the last week of Jesus's life, as viewed through the eyes of his betrayer, Judas Iscariot.

The drama is told through song, rather than dialogue. Viewers see a modern drama troupe seemingly acting out the plot, or do they? All the well known final events are covered, from the arrival of Jesus into Jerusalem through the betrayal to the trial and crucifixion. Maybe it's the real events people are seeing, or maybe it's just a dramatisation. You watch, you decide.
