Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before John began as a director, he wrote the screenplays for a number of films. Notably, one of his first big writing successes was with which 1983 film starring Michael Keaton and Teri Garr?

Answer: Mr. Mom

'Mr. Mom' was directed by Stan Dragoti, but the writing credit for this fun-loving film was given to John Hughes, his second after 'National Lampoon's Class Reunion'. 'Mr. Mom' was the story of a man who lost his job, and was forced to stay home and take care of the kids while his wife worked.
2. Several of John Hughes' earliest films were connected with which popular humor periodical, a magazine for which he worked during the 1970s?

Answer: National Lampoon

As mentioned previously, his first writing credit was for 'Class Reunion'. He also wrote the screenplays for 'National Lampoon's Vacation', 'National Lampoon's European Vacation' and 'National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation'.
3. During the 1980s, John Hughes was known for working with members of the 'Brat Pack'. One particular actor, Anthony Michael Hall, was featured in a number of Hughes' best films. What was Hall's first appearance in a film with which Hughes was connected?

Answer: Vacation

Hall's first appearance in a John Hughes' film was in 'Vacation', for which Hughes wrote the script. Interesting to note, Anthony Michael Hall appeared taller in the later scenes of 'Vacation'. This was because the Wally World scenes were filmed several months after all of the other scenes, and after Hall had had a growth spurt.

As can be imagined, 'Vacation' involved a cross-country family vacation that went madly awry.
4. One of John Hughes' early films that went under the radar was called 'Nate and Hayes'. Michael O'Keefe starred in this film as 'Nate', alongside which other actor as 'Hayes'?

Answer: Tommy Lee Jones

Tommy Lee Jones was a pirate named Captain Bully Hayes, while Michael O'Keefe was an unwitting civilian named Nathaniel Williamson, the two getting tangled up together in a love triangle. Hughes wrote the script for this corny but cute film.
5. Though Hughes first made a name for himself with his screenwriting, he would become even better known for his directing. Which film was the first that he directed?

Answer: Sixteen Candles

His directing debut came in 1984 with the popular teen classic 'Sixteen Candles'. Hughes would go on to direct seven more films in the 1980s.

'Sixteen Candles' was about a teenage girl whose family somehow completely forgot her birthday.
6. Which of these actors or actresses was not among the members of John Hughes' 'Breakfast Club'?

Answer: Charlie Sheen

It was Sheen's brother, Emilio Estevez, who played the 'sporto' Andrew Clark in 'The Breakfast Club'. Alongside Estevez appeared Judd Nelson (John Bender), Molly Ringwald (Claire Standish), Anthony Michael Hall (Brian Johnson) and Ally Sheedy (Allison Reynolds).
7. Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith played the two principal roles in John Hughes' zany comic romp 'Weird Science', but who stole the show as Mitchell-Smith's brother Chet in that film?

Answer: Bill Paxton

Though Hall and Mitchell-Smith were cute as Gary and Wyatt, and Kelly LeBrock was sexy as Lisa, it was Bill Paxton who really had me laughing with quotes such as the following: 'How 'bout a nice greasy pork sandwich served in a dirty ashtray?'
8. The film 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' principally took place in which large midwestern American city?

Answer: Chicago

Well, this is just one of the keys to knowing your John Hughes! Most of his films take place within, or in the suburbs of, the city of Chicago. Often, they are listed as taking place in the fictitious Chicago suburb of Shermer, Illinois.
9. One of the most popular films directed by John Hughes was the 1987 classic 'Planes, Trains and Automobiles'. With which pair of comedic actors did Hughes work in this film?

Answer: John Candy and Steve Martin

Two of Hughes' most beloved characters, Steve Martin as Neal Page and John Candy as Del Griffith, were brought to life in this wonderfully funny film. Steve Martin once said that this was his favorite film in which he appeared.
10. Which of John Hughes' films featured the acting of a tom-boyish Mary Stuart Masterson, and Lea Thompson as Miss Amanda Jones?

Answer: Some Kind of Wonderful

'Some Kind of Wonderful' was released in 1987. In it, Eric Stoltz played a young, working class kid named Keith who was trying to woo Amanda Jones, the girl of his dreams. Masterson played Watts, the drummer, mechanic friend of Keith. Craig Sheffer added a little flair as the rich, snobbish Hardy Jenns, and Elias Koteas added a little personality with his punk-rockish Duncan.
