The island happened to be where Maui had been living for a thousand years. Maui turned out to be an egotistical demi-god who locked Moana up so he could use her boat to get off the island. With the ocean's help, Moana was able to get back onto the boat.

Maui's tattoos appear on his torso when something significant happens in his life. He talks to one of his tattoos who acts like a conscience to Maui, but the tattoo doesn't talk back to him. At the end of "Moana", she becomes one Maui's tattoos.

Maui told Moana that Tamatoa liked to talk about himself so Moana got his attention while Maui tried to get his staff off Tamatoa's shell. When Tamatoa finished the song he was singing about himself, he went after Maui for trying to get his staff back. Moana tricked Tamatoa into believing he could have the Heart of Te Fiti.

While Tamatoa was busy digging for the Heart of Te Fiti, Moana and Maui made it back to the surface with the real Heart of Te Fiti and Maui's staff.

The first time Moana and Maui tried to get past the Te Kā, Maui's staff was damaged when Moana wouldn't turn back. Defeated and angry, Maui changed into a bird and flew away leaving Moana alone. While out on the ocean, Moana was visited by the spirit of her grandmother who gave her the strength to continue the journey. Moana used the same tactic as she did last time and went around the Te Kā. When Maui returned to help, he was able to distract the Te Kā while Moana returned the heart to Te Fiti.

When Maui stole Te Fiti's heart, she became Te Kā, the lava monster that Tala told stories about to Moana as a child. Moana called to Te Kā and commanded the ocean to let Te Kā walk to Moana. The waters parted and Te Kā made her way to Moana. Moana put the heart back where it belonged and Te Kā's lava exterior changed into the green, beautiful Te Fiti. She made her island lush and beautiful again. Moana made Maui apologize for stealing her heart and Te Fiti fixed Maui's damaged staff.

Maui left and Moana went back to her island and her parents. Later, she led her people out past the reef to fish while Maui flew around them.
