Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 2003 live-action rendition of "Peter Pan", what final bit of magic is seen before the credits roll?

Answer: A streak of light disappearing into the starry night, as Peter Pan returns to Neverland.

"Where do you live?" "Second to the right, and then straight on till morning."

How one gets to Neverland may be difficult for the average person. When Peter Pan takes Wendy and her brothers near the beginning of the film, we travel with them, but at the end of the movie, all you see is a streak of light ending in a flash deep in the nighttime sky.

Jason Isaacs played the traditionally dual role of Captain Hook and Mr. Darling, while Jeremy Sumpter and Rachel Hurd-Wood played Peter Pan and Wendy Darling. This rendition of the classic story by J.M. Barrie had a decidedly more romantic feel to it than prior versions, in my opinion.

As a trivial point of interest, the role of Michael Darling was filled by Freddie Popplewell; younger brother to Anna Popplewell, who played Susan Pevensie in the "Narnia" films.
2. In a series chock full of magic of all sorts, can you pick out which of these "Harry Potter" films ended with the last bit of magic seen being nothing more than a moving photograph of James and Lily Potter with an infant Harry?

Answer: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Yes, of course it was the very first "Harry Potter" film, when Hagrid gives Harry the photo of his parents just as Harry is boarding the Hogwart's Express to return to his Aunt and Uncle's home for the summer. While Harry's parents are a key feature of later films in the series, it is never quite as poignant as in the first movie when Harry finally learns the truth about his parents.

"Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" (also known as "Sorceror's Stone") recounts the beginning of Harry's introduction into the wizarding world and schooling at Hogwart's School of Witchraft and Wizardry. It also marks the first efforts by Lord Voldemort to return, after disappearing when he tried to kill Harry as a baby.
3. "Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles..." In fact, only one miracle is seen in this film: a man is brought back to life from being mostly dead. What is the name of this 1987 film?

Answer: The Princess Bride

"The Princess Bride" is the story of the most beautiful woman in the world (Buttercup), her use by an evil Prince to start a war (Prince Humperdinck), and her rescue by her true love (Westley), a master swordsman (Inigo Montoya) and a giant (André the Giant). This brief synopsis doesn't do the film justice - you have to see it to understand.

Miracle Max (played by the hilarious Billy Crystal) is convinced by Fezzik (André the Giant) and Inigo (Mandy Patinkin) to use his magic to revive the Man in Black (played by Carey Elwes) so that he can help them in their assault on the castle. Fezzik has strength and Inigo has skill with a sword, but the Man in Black has what they need - brains - to plan the attack.

Thank goodness for the chocolate coating; it helped make the miracle pill go down easier.
4. King Peter, King Edmond, Queen Susan and Queen Lucy find a burning lamp in the woods. Investigating a feeling of familiarity, they push through the trees and wind up falling out of the wardrobe as children. Is this the last bit of magic seen in 2005's "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe"?

Answer: No

After the credits begin to roll, one more scene reappears as Lucy tries to find her way back into Narnia. Professor Kirke talks to her about how he has also tried many times to return to Narnia, but believes that it will only happen when one isn't looking for it. As they leave the room, the door to the wardrobe swings ajar and a gleam of light emits from it, accompanied by the sound of Aslan's roar.

The main actors in the film were youngsters William Moseley (Peter), Skandar Keynes (Edmund), Anna Popplewell (Susan), Georgie Henley (Lucy) and the great Liam Neeson as the voice of Aslan.
5. In the first "Shrek" film (2001), what is the last magic spell to occur?

Answer: A fairy turns an onion and three mice into a carriage with a driver and two horses.

After Fiona takes "love's true form" as an ogress, she and Shrek kiss again. This segues straight into their wedding celebration, during which a fairy transforms the onion and mice for them to depart in.

The options involving King Harold and Fairy Godmother both occur near the end of "Shrek 2" (2004).

The "Shrek" films feature Mike Myers as Shrek, Cameron Diaz as Fiona, and Eddie Murphy as Donkey, amongst a myriad other fairy tale characters.
6. Which of these Disney animated films ends with the magical creation of a rainbow as a ship sails off towards the horizon?

Answer: The Little Mermaid

Ariel and Prince Eric have just married and Ariel's father King Triton swings his trident over his head, creating a beautiful rainbow over the wedding ship as it sails off. The 1989 classic featured Jodi Benson as Ariel and Christopher Daniel Barnes as Prince Eric, along with the humorous stylings of Buddy Hackett as wisecracking seagull Scuttle.

"The Little Mermaid" is based on the popular fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson of Denmark. It was originally published in 1837 and recounts the story of a mermaid willing to give up her life in the sea to become human and marry the human prince that she loves.
7. As promised, the Silvertongue uses his ability to read Dustfinger back into the book for which this film is named. Which book?

Answer: Inkheart

This 2008 interpretation of Cornelia Funke's 2003 novel is brought to life by Brendan Fraser as Mo "Silvertongue" Folchart, Paul Bettany as Dustfinger, and Andy Serkis (who played Gollum in "The Lord of the Rings") as the evil Capricorn. As a Silvertongue, Mo has the power to read characters out of books into the real world. Unfortunately, whenever he does that, something from the real world goes into the book. When his power first manifested, Mo inadvertently read his wife into a book called "Inkheart", and brought out a number of characters - both evil and benign - into the real world.

The novel "Inkheart" is the first of three books within the "Inkworld" trilogy, the second and third books titled "Inkspell" (2005) and "Inkdeath" (2007) respectively.
8. Is there any magic as powerful as that of the imagination? This film ends with a brother introducing his sister to a whole world of imagination come to life where he is a king... but only if she is a princess. What is the name of the film?

Answer: Bridge to Terabithia

Josh Hutcherson and AnnaSophia Robb play the roles of Jess Aarons and Leslie Burke, respectively, a pair of unlikely best friends who create the realm of Terabithia from their imaginations. After tragedy strikes and Leslie dies in an accident, Jess decides to honor Leslie's memory by sharing their world with his little sister May Belle (played by Ballee Madison).

The 2007 film is based on the 1977 book of the same name by Katherine Paterson.
9. After a brief conversation with her umbrella handle parrot, Mary Poppins opens her umbrella and floats away over London. Is this how the movie ends?

Answer: Yes

This 1964 classic starred Julie Andrews in the title role with Dick van Dyke playing the part of Bert (as well as Mr. Dawes Sr.). The movie does indeed end the same way it begins - with Mary Poppins up in the clouds above London.
10. This film's last display of magic is the unlikely view of Prince Edward and New York girl Nancy Tremaine jumping into a manhole and being transported to an animated fairytale land called Andalasia. What film?

Answer: Enchanted

"Enchanted" (2007) takes a classic-style Disney animated film and thrusts the main characters into a live-action New York City, with all the absurdity that you might expect. Amy Adams starred as Giselle with James Marsden as Prince Edward. Originally expecting to live happily ever after together, they both meet their true loves in the "real" world. Patrick Dempsey and Idina Menzel played the roles of the real-life matches for the fairytale royalty.
