Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To find out what kind of animals are in this quiz, begin with the word PETS and change one letter to come up with a word that means 'strokes lightly' or could be the nickname of a New England football team.

Answer: Pats

Coincidentally, PATS are also what you give to your pets to show them affection. As for the football team, 'The PATS' is the nickname of the New England Patriots.
2. Now change a letter to make a word that is our first type of pet, also known as felines.

Answer: Cats

CATS can be furry, but I think of them as fluffy - especially the long-haired breeds. The scientific name for CATS is Felis catus, and when in a group, they are called a clowder, or a glaring.

As babies, CATS are called kittens, and they are extremely cute little fluffy balls of energy at that age. But watch out! CATS are natural hunters, and like to pounce claws-first at anything that moves.
3. Another letter change gives a word for something that holds soup or vegetables, or any other kind of food to be stored for a long time.

Answer: Cans

CANS are used to hold all sorts of things, not just preserved foods. Drinks also come in CANS - mostly pop and energy drinks and beer (for adults).

The first time the idea of canning was used was in Europe in the early 1800s, when Napoleon offered a cash prize to someone who could find a way to store large amounts of food (armies eat a lot).
4. Switch a letter to come up with a word that could refer to people who have been in prison, or a word that pairs up with 'pros' when thinking of good and bad things.

Answer: Cons

'CONS', when talking about people who have been in prison, is short for 'convicts', meaning that they were convicted (found guilty) of committing a crime.

'Pros and CONS' is the English way of saying something that was originally in Latin as 'pro et contra', meaning 'for and against'. So the next time you are trying to decide to play a prank on your little brother or sister, you might want to think of the pros and CONS (good and bad results) of doing it.
5. Change one letter to make a word that means 'puts on clothing', or could also refer to Spanish noblemen.

Answer: Dons

DONS are not only people named Donald and Donovan, but 'Don' is also used as a title of respect in Spanish-speaking countries, originally only for royalty and other nobility, but now also for respected people in the community.

When used as a verb (to don), it means to put something on - usually an article of clothing.
6. Change another letter to come to our next pet, often called 'man's best friends'.

Answer: Dogs

DOGS are not as independent as cats are, preferring to be more social with humans and other DOGS. They make very good companions - they generally like to play, are trainable (people say that cats can be trained, too, but I don't believe it), and are very loyal and protective of their owners.

The scientific name for DOGS is Canis lupus familiaris. Groups of DOGS are called packs, and dog babies are called puppies. And, they are (in my opinion) more furry than fluffy (with exceptions).
7. With another letter change, you can describe what someone does with a shovel.

Answer: Digs

When someone DIGS, they use a shovel (or their hands) to scoop what they are digging and place it somewhere else. It is also possible to dig through things (like your closet or a filing cabinet) just by moving things around.

And in slang, your 'DIGS' are where you live or hang out.
8. Change another letter to make a slang word that means to put someone down (or to insult them).

Answer: Diss

To DISS someone is to 'dis'respect them in words, actions or behaviour. A DISS can also be the insult or put-down that is given to someone.
9. Change one letter to come up with something that you put food in when you feed your pets.

Answer: Dish

A DISH could be described as a mostly flat, shallow bowl. Another word for a DISH would be a plate, although DISHes in general refers to all of your eating vessels and utensils (forks and knives, etc.). How often have you been asked by your parents to help do the DISHes?
10. One last letter change brings you a word that describes our last pets; they come in many different colours, and live in aquariums.

Answer: Fish

Pet FISH come in two different types; freshwater and saltwater. These scaly creatures are often brightly coloured, have fins and tails to swim with, and while they may not be easy to cuddle with, they make a wonderful visual pet, bringing beauty into your home.

When fish travel in groups, it is called a school of fish. Their babies? Those are called eggs, or roe.
