"The Lion King," with songs by pop singer
, came out this past weekend. It is a top hit at the box office. On Pride
, a momentous event happens. Sirabai has given birth to a cub with the king of the land, Mufasa, as father. They named the cub
. Rafiki the baboon holds the cub up over the rock for all to see as all the animals bow down to honor the new young prince.
Simba and
, a lioness cub, are best friends. Zazu, a hornbill, tells them one day, they are going to get married. They are grossed out at the idea. Simba tells Zazu, "I Just Can't Wait to Be
," because he believes when he is king, Simba can do whatever he wants to do.
Meanwhile, Simba's uncle
wants to be the king and plots with three hyenas to kill Mufasa and Simba so that he can be the king. Sadly, Mufasa is killed, and Simba
himself. Scar tells him to "run away and never return." When Simba runs, Scar tells the hyenas to kill the cub. They chase him, but he escapes, and they decide he won't come back, but if he does, they will kill him.
Simba meets a
named Pumbaa and a meerkat named
. They decide that because Simba is a cub, having him around is a good idea, as they can train him to be on their side so that when he is older, he can protect them instead of being a threat to them. Simba is sad about what happened, and they teach him not to worry about his past with a phrase and a song, "Hakuna Matata". As they sing the song, it depicts Simba growing up into an adult lion.
They are out having fun one day when Simba runs into a now grown-up Nala. She is surprised Simba is alive and happy that he can return and take his place as king. As they get reacquainted, Timon becomes scared and asks Pumbaa, "Can You
the Love Tonight?" She is upset that Simba won't return, and since he won't tell her what happened that day when he left, she does not understand. Disappointed she goes. Simba comes across Rafiki, who tells Simba, "You don't even know who you are." When Simba tells Rafiki that the past doesn't matter, Rafiki hits Simba with his walking stick. When Simba asks him why, Rafkiki replies, "It doesn't matter. It was in the past." Then he tells him, "You can either run from the past or
from it." As he swings the stick again, Simba ducks and understands. After tossing Rafiki's stick, he gets Timon and Pumbaa to and returns to Pride Rock to take his place as king.
Simba is surprised to see Pride Rock is desolate. Scar is not happy to see that his
is still alive. He sighs and declares, "If you want something done
, you have to do it yourself." He and Simba fight, and while Simba is hanging over the cliff, Scar says the scene looks familiar. He tells his nephew it looked the same as when he, Scar, killed Mufasa. Simba, driven with adrenaline-fueled by immense anger, pounces on his uncle, ready to kill him. He makes Scar
to all the others what happened to Mufasa. Scar confesses, "I
Mufasa." That made for a lot of angry lionesses.
