quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the VERY FIRST animal that we see in the movie?

Answer: rhinoceros

But the first thing you see is the rising sun (I hope you knew that). This is the first allusion to the Circle of Life.
2. Okay, jumping ahead to "Be Prepared"-- What is so interesting about Scar's promises to the hyenas?

Answer: they are similar to Hitler's promises

Believe it or not, there are many references in the Lion King to Hitler. For one, Hitler also promised his followers that they would "never be hungry again". Also, if you notice, when the hyenas pass Scar during the song, they are doing the goose-step. Coincidence? I think not! Disney is SUCH a genius!
3. What Shakespearian play does "The Lion King"'s plot follow so well that it could very well be an animal adaption?

Answer: Hamlet

Though I wouldn't at all be surprised if Timon the meerkat got his name from "Timon of Athens", "The Lion King"'s plot strongly resembles that of Hamlet. Basically, Hamlet's (Simba's) father is murdered by his uncle Claudius (Scar). Hamlet wishes to avenge his father's death after seeing his father's ghost (think of the scene where his father is in the clouds, advising Simba) and he attempts to make his way home to Denmark.
4. When Mufasa is killed by the stampede, what is over his body?

Answer: a tree

Did you notice that this tree was broken in half into the shape of a circle? Could this imply that the Circle Of Life was broken before it's time?
5. Hooray for Timon and Pumba! What does Timon do to suggest that he doesn't entirely trust young Simba during "Hakuna Matata"?

Answer: files down his claws

Come on, guys! You know that Timon loves Simba! But why WOULD he file down his claws, unless he was worried that Simba might eat them?
6. Another question about "Hakuna Matata"-- What's behind Simba as he becomes an adult?

Answer: the moon

Do you know why I mentioned this? Because of the circle! The moon is full, which could mean that the circle is mending after Mufasa's death.
7. What does Raffiki say to Simba that means a lot to him?

Answer: "he lives in you"

Pumba says the one about the behind (go figure...), Nala tells Simba that going home to save the pride is his responsibility, and Mufasa says that Simba is his son, and is the king. But, when Raffiki talks about Mufasa (the father) living inside Simba (the son) he is AGAIN mentioning a cycle and therefore a circle. Crazy, huh?
8. What does Scar say to the dignified Sarabi that contradicts everything that Mufasa stood for?

Answer: "I'm king--I can do whatever I want!"

"I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts! Dedely-dee! They are standing in a row! Bum bum bum! Big ones; small ones some as big as your head!" Anyway-- Mufasa pointed out to young Simba is that "Being king doesn't mean having your way all the time", and saying "I'm king-I can do whatever I want!" is very much the opposite.
9. Though "Daddy isn't here to save" Simba, things look mighty familiar about the situation in which Scar backs Simba off of Pride Rock. Where have we seen this before? Could it be when Mufasa confronts Scar after he didn't attend Simba's introduction to the animals in the beginning of the movie?

Answer: No

It actually mirrors Mufasa's death. And did you notice that Scar once again comes close to whisper something to his victim? Too bad Simba has a short temper! And "Run away and never return" comes up again. PS: anyone smell a CIRCLE?!
10. What does rain symbolize in the the second to last scene?

Answer: purification

The rain here really screams the purification of the pride lands after Scar's rule. Some interesting tidbits about these last scenes: When Simba roars to the sky, the heavens open up, revealing the stars (kings of the past, remember!) Could Mufasa be smiling down on his boy? Also, at the end of the film, Simba's new born baby is raised for the heaven's approval just before "THE LION KING" is smacked on the screen again, completing THE CIRCLE! And there are more circles in the movie than the ones I mentioned... watch the movie and see for yourself.

It'll make you dizzy, I promise.
