Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What type of animals, that inhabit an ice castle, does Bowser invade at the beginning of the film?

Answer: Penguins

Bowser descends upon the ice castle inhabited by the penguins via an airship. Bowser tells the penguins to surrender or meet their doom. Comically, the penguins throw snowballs at Bowser that do absolutely nothing to him. Bowser's army quickly captures the penguins and Bowser makes them his prisoners.

In the video game series of the same name, penguin characters first appeared in "Super Mario 64" (1996).
2. What object does Bowser obtain from the ice castle that he believes will make him invincible?

Answer: Super Star

Bowser steals the Super Star from the penguins after he quickly overpowers them and burns down their ice castle. Bowser explains that he intends to convince Princess Peach to marry him by showing her how powerful he is with the Super Star. If she declines to marry him then he intends to use the Super Star to destroy Mushroom Kingdom.
3. In what area of the state of New York do Mario and Luigi own a plumbing business?

Answer: Brooklyn

Mario and Luigi are Italian-American brothers that live with their family in Brooklyn, a borough of New York City. The brothers own SMB Plumbing and, in the film, are shown assisting a client with a dog named Frances that attacks them on the job.
4. What part of Mario and Luigi's business does their family make fun of while they are having dinner together?

Answer: Commercial

Mario and Luigi's father does not seem happy that his sons are working as plumbers. The whole family laughs at their commercial, implying that it is cheesy. Throughout most of the commercial the brothers are singing and seemingly making a parody of the earlier film and tv adaptations of "Super Mario Bros.".
5. Knowing that Bowser is going to invade the Mushroom Kingdom, Peach seeks an alliance with the Kongs. Which character is referred to as the 'King of the Kongs'?

Answer: Cranky Kong

In the film Cranky Kong is the 'King of the Kongs' and he is the father of Donkey Kong. Peach is seeking an alliance with the Kongs so that the Kong army can provide some resistance against Bowser. The character of Cranky Kong first appeared in the video game "Donkey Kong Country" (1994) and as his name implies he is quite rude and impatient.
6. How does Bowser torture Luigi into telling him about the whereabouts of Mario?

Answer: Pulling his moustache hairs

When Luigi unintentionally left Brooklyn via a tunnel, he ended up in the Darklands that were controlled by Bowser. Bowser's minions quickly captured Luigi and Bowser plucked his moustache hairs to get Luigi to tell him about his brother Mario. Bowser had spies in the Mushroom Kingdom and he became jealous of Mario since he was spending time with Princess Peach.
7. What power-up does Mario use to defeat Donkey Kong in battle and thus gain the Kong Army?

Answer: Catsuit

Knowing that Donkey Kong was much more powerful than Mario, Cranky Kong arranged power-ups around the arena in which the battle took place. Once Mario was transformed via the catsuit, Donkey Kong laughed hysterically. However, the catsuit gave Mario great speed and power and he eventually subdued Donkey Kong. The catsuit first appeared in the game "Super Mario 3D World" (2013).
8. In a great homage to the games, many characters ride a go-kart to get from Kong Jungle to the Mushroom Kingdom. What does a koopa use to knock Mario and Donkey Kong off of the Rainbow Road track?

Answer: Blue shell

In addition to the mainline series of "Super Mario Bros." video games, a major spin-off series called "Mario Kart" is also extremely popular. In the "Mario Kart" games, players race in go-karts and have different abilities like speed and strength as well as various power-ups to make the races interesting.

The "Super Mario Bros. Movie" nailed the "Mario Kart" vibe including having one of the koopas yell "blue shell" after he released the powerful object at Mario and Donkey Kong. The blue shell destroyed the vehicle and sent Mario and Donkey Kong tumbling into the water.
9. What character(s) defeat Bowser in combat after they are transported from the Mushroom Kingdom back to New York?

Answer: Mario and Luigi

While in the Mushroom Kingdom, Bowser launches a Bomber Bill that Mario redirects into a Warp Pipe. This causes everyone to be transported to Brooklyn where a fight with Bowser ensues. Luigi saves Mario from Bowser's flames and then the brothers obtain the Super Star.

The Super Star gives Mario and Luigi great power and invincibility from Bowser's attacks and they eventually defeat him. For good measure, Peach shoves a shrinking mushroom into Bowser so that he is less powerful.
10. The original song "Peaches" became an instant classic from the film. What instrument does Bowser play while he proclaims his love for Peach in song?

Answer: Piano

Bowser is shown singing the song "Peaches" after he tells the Koopa Army that he intends to marry Peach. In addition to really getting into the vocalization, Bowser plays on the piano while he sings. The second time Bowser sings "Peaches" is during the end credits when he has been shrunk and he is a prisoner in the Mushroom Kingdom.

The actor Jack Black voiced Bowser in the film and memorably sang the song "Peaches".
