Blockbuster Style Trivia Questions

1. Animals: Which GSD is a breed of dog often used by police forces and named for a European country?

From Quiz
Blockbusters Gold Run by Category

Answer: German Shepherd Dog

The German Shepherd Dog is a popular breed of dog in the USA and UK being the American Kennel Club's second-most registered breed and the seventh-most registered breed with The Kennel Club in the UK. In the UK the breed name was changed after World War I to the Alsatian Wolf Dog due to anti-German sentiment; the UK reverted to the name German Shepherd Dog in 1977. German Shepherd Dogs are used in many different roles including as guard and police dogs as well as being used for search and rescue and as detection dogs for drugs and explosives.

2. Animals: What N is a type of whale that has a long pointed tusk?

From Quiz FunTrivia Blockbusters: I'll Have an 'N'

Answer: Narwhal

3. Animals: What M is a very small fish?

From Quiz FunTrivia Blockbusters: I'll Have an 'M'

Answer: Minnow

4. Animals: Which L is an animal that, proverbially, cannot change its spots?

From Quiz FunTrivia Blockbusters: I'll Have an 'L'

Answer: Leopard

Leopards are medium-sized wildcats natively found in sub-Saharan Africa and southern Asia. Leopards were at one time thought to be a hybrid of the lion and the jaguar. Leopards primarily hunt medium-sized mammals, such as deer and warthogs. These are often ambushed from branches above or dense vegetation. In appearance, leopards vary greatly in their colouration and markings, depending on their surroundings. The dark, ring-like patterns on the leopard's coat are called rosettes. These turn to solid spots on the face and limbs and rings on the tail. All aid the leopard in camouflage.

5. Animals: What K is a creature whose young are known as Joeys?

From Quiz FunTrivia Blockbusters: I'll Have a 'K'

Answer: Kangaroo

The Kangaroo is a mammal that is native to Australia, and is that country's national symbol. A group of kangaroos is known as a "mob". With their strong hind legs, kangaroos can reach speeds of up to 44mph (70 km/h) When they are born, baby kangaroos are tiny - about the size of a bumble bee. They develop in a 'pouch' on the mother's chest. After a gestation period of about 34 days, the joey will clamber from the birth canal to the pouch. At six months, the joey can leave the pouch for short periods. Red kangaroos leave the pouch for good at around eight months and continue to suckle for another three or four months. Grey kangaroos leave at about 11 months, continuing to suckle until about 18 months.

6. Animals: What J is part of the animal world that comes in a group called "a smack"?

From Quiz FunTrivia Blockbusters: I'll Have a 'J'

Jellyfish are found in all oceans and at all depths. There have been jellyfish for more than 500 million years. Jellyfish defend themselves and attack prey through stinging. Some are deadly to humans, leading to many deaths in the Pacific. Other jellyfish stings can cause agony to humans. Other collective nouns for jellyfish include bloom, brood, fluther and smuth.

7. Literature: Which 'I' was a prolific author and Academy Award winning screenwriter who famously played by cider house rules?

From Quiz FunTrivia Blockbusters: I'll Have an 'I'. Part 2

Answer: John Irving

John Irving (birth name John Blunt Jr) was born in New Hampshire in 1942. His first three novels, "Setting Free The Bears" (1968); "The Water-Method Man" (1972); and "The 158-Pound Marriage" (1974), were well liked by the critics, but were poor sellers. His fourth novel, "The World According to Garp" (1978), was to change things. It became an international bestseller, and was made into a movie. Several more books were also made into movies, and "The Hotel New Hampshire" (1981), "The Cider House Rules" (1985), "A Widow for One Year" (1998), and "The Fourth Hand" all topped the New York Times bestsellers list.

From Quiz FunTrivia Blockbusters: I'll Have an 'H'

Answer: Hedgehog

11. Animals: Which F is an animal that comes in sly groups called skulks?

Answer: Fox

The collective name for a group of foxes may be seen as quite appropriate by some people. Sometimes the group is known as a "leash". Ferrets come in groups called busyness (or business). A group of frogs is an army. I was not able to find any collective noun for a group of flamingos. Perhaps "a prettiness" would be good?

12. Animals: What E is an animal that never forgets?

From Quiz FunTrivia Blockbusters: I'll Have an 'E'.

Answer: Elephant

Elephants are indigenous to Africa and to Asia. There are subtle differences in appearance between the two. Asian elephants are smaller than their near-cousins, with smaller ears. It is also said, perhaps anecdotally, that while Asian elephants can be trained to assist humans in tasks such as logging, African elephants are untrainable. As to that belief that elephants are afraid of mice, there is no scientific evidence to back it up.

13. Animals: What D is a breed of dog named after the place in Yugoslavia where they originated?

From Quiz FunTrivia Blockbusters: I'll Have a 'D'.

The cheetah is a sprinter, so its top speed refers to short bursts. The cheetah can reach speeds of up to 75mph. The cheetah can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in five seconds which, in fact is slower than a Jaguar: a Jaguar F-Type, with 380BHP in the engine. (Sorry, could not resist that little bit of silliness.)

15. Animals: What B are a type of animal that includes varieties such as Black, Brown, Sun and Polar?

From Quiz FunTrivia Blockbusters: I'll Have a 'B'.

Cryptic Crosswords were developed in the UK in the 1920s particularly through the crosswords set by Edward Powys Mathers in 'The Observer' newspaper from 1926.
