Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Johnny Depp is a Tim Burton regular, and we'll meet him often in this quiz. In this 1990 movie he has sharp cutting devices where his hands should be. "His story will touch you, even though he can't." What's the title of this movie?

Answer: Edward Scissorhands

Johnny Depp portrays the tragic Edward Scissorhands, a man created with hands made of scissors. He is adopted into a "typical" American family, in a stereotypical American suburb, where he struggles to fit in. In the beginning, people are thrilled with his hedge clipping and haircutting skills. As the novelty wears off, people start to dislike Edward. He is ostracized by virtually everyone, and eventually ends up alone.
Also starring Winona Ryder, who plays Kim, Edward's love interest, the film was nominated for an Academy Award, a BAFTA Film Award and a Golden Globe.
2. In this 2005 stop-motion movie we meet Victor, who somehow ends up being married to a dead girl. What movie am I talking about?

Answer: Corpse Bride

This is an excellent movie with great songs by Danny Elfman. Johnny Depp gives his voice to the unfortunate Victor Van Dort. Victor is supposed to marry Victoria, the daughter of a local noble family. The marriage was agreed upon by the respective parents, although Victor and Victoria never met.

After a unsuccessful wedding rehearsal, Victor ends up being married to the Corpse Bride (Helena Bonham Carter). At first, the Corpse Bride is convinced that Victor loves her, in the end she sees that he belongs among the living. Eventually, everyone lives (?) happily ever after.

This movie was nominated for an Academy Award.
3. Aliens attack the planet in this next movie (released in 1996), filled to the rafters with splendid actors (and Tom Jones). "Nice planet. We'll take it!". Can you give me the title of this one?

Answer: Mars Attacks!

We see Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Pierce Brosnan, Annette Bening, Sarah Jessica Parker, Natalie Portman, Tom Jones and a lot of others in this witty movie. A B-movie style and storyline, combined with this great cast, make for a highly enjoyable movie.

The aliens do not accept the friendliness bestowed upon them, and start reducing humans to skeletons. But humankind fights back, although the eventual solution to killing the aliens is not the most graceful of solutions.
4. In 2003, this Academy Award-nominated movie was released, about a son who finds some truth in his father's exuberant stories. "An adventure as big as life itself". What is the title of this movie?

Answer: Big Fish

Here is yet another masterly Burton-movie with an impressive cast: Ewan McGregor, Jessica Lange, Albert Finney, Danny DeVito and Steve Buscemi. When his father is dying, Will Bloom (Billy Crudup) returns home. His father tells his life story, an exuberant tale full of strange creatures and fantastic events.

The son tries to find the truth behind his stories, which he thinks to be made up. However, there appears to be more truth in these stories than he thought.
5. In 1993 Burton wrote the story to another stop-motion movie. This one is about a Halloween skeleton kidnapping Santa Claus and taking over Christmas. Can you give me the title of this movie?

Answer: The Nightmare before Christmas

Once again Burton and Elfman team up, creating another fantastic movie. Jack Skellington is the leader of Halloween Town. He becomes bored with Halloween and doing the same thing year in year out. One day, he stumbles upon Christmas Town. He decides to take over Christmas, thinking he can do better than this guy they call "Sandy Claws". Needless to say, things don't turn out the way Jack planned.
6. In this somber 1999 movie a headless horseman spreads terror in a small town. Inspector Ichabod Crane investigates. "Heads will roll." What is the title of this movie?

Answer: Sleepy Hollow

This movie once again stars Johnny Depp (as Ichabod Crane), alongside Michael Gambon (playing Baltus Van Tassel) and Christopher Walken (as the Hessian Horseman). Ichabod Crane is sent to the small town of Sleepy Hollow to investigate the mysterious murders there. Armed with newly designed investigative techniques, he finds himself up against some kind of supernatural being. Creepy and somber tale!
7. This delicious movie (2005) was based on a book by Roald Dahl, about a little boy and a weird guy making sweets. Oompa-Loompas rule! Can you name this movie?

Answer: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

They're all Dahl-stories of course! Johnny Depp brilliantly portrays the eccentric Willy Wonka. "Willy Wonka is semi-sweet and nuts". This is the well-known tale about little Charlie Bucket, who can't believe his luck when he finds one of the five Golden Tickets.

These tickets, given out by the mysterious Willy Wonka, give five children the right to visit Wonka's amazing chocolate factory. Only one of them will receive a special gift from Mr. Wonka. One by one, the other children yield to temptation, leaving Charlie to receive the special gift.

10. And finally, another Burton-movie in which we meet Jack Nicholson. This time he plays the nemesis, spreading death in Gotham City. Can you give me the title of this 1989 movie?

Answer: Batman

Not as easy as it looks, is it? Michael Keaton plays Batman, who finds himself facing the demonic Joker (magnificent acting by Nicholson, who owns the Joker). The Joker spreads terror in Gotham City by altering everyday products, so that combined use kills people. Eventually, The Joker appears to be the murderer of Bruce Wayne's parents, thus giving Batman his revenge.
