Other than the one Teen Choice Award that Natalie won for her role, she was also nominated that year (2002) in the category of Choice Chemistry in a Film with co-star Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker). "V For Vendetta" was directed by James McTeigue, and produced by the Wachowski brothers and Joel Silver. The plot takes place in a totalitarian Britain, where the government oppresses the people and takes away their freedoms. A man in disguise, known only as V, goes on a personal vendetta against the government. V rescues Evey, played by Natalie Portman, and she sees him as sort of a father figure. Natalie had to go bald for her role in this movie.

In her 3rd film, Natalie plays a young girl in a small town. In the film, Timothy Hutton plays a man returning for his high school reunion. He's reached a lull in his life, between his job and his relationship; he's not who he used to be. When Willie returns to his town, all his friends are basically the same, just older. He finds solace in the only mature person he finds, twelve year old Marty (Portman). He is ridiculed for this connection with a Lolita, but it is a very gripping friendship the two develop in the course of the film. Through the innocence of the young child, he learns that he doesn't have to be like his friends, nor does he have to completely grow up, just because he's older. The quote comes when Willie inquires what Marty and her friends do for fun at her age as he's getting to know her. Her straightforward replay has him taken aback before she assures him that it is a joke, and he should lighten up.

This film follows Novalee as she's abandoned, pregnant and penniless, by her boyfriend in nowhere Oklahoma. She has the baby in Wal-Mart and becomes a little famous. She makes a few good friends and moves into the town, where she tries to care for her child and make the best of her life. All through her struggles and triumphs, the town librarian, Forney, becomes her best friend. Eventually they have a night together in which he professes his love for her and asks if she loves him too. She says no, and heartbroken, he heads to Boston to get his degree. Eventually she realizes what she's lost and Novalee goes across the country trying to apologize to Forney and get him to come back home, which is when this quote comes into play.

Natalie only has a very short cameo in this film, which features three brothers played by Jason Schwartzman, Owen Wilson and Adrien Brody traveling by train through India. "Closer" (2004) starred Julia Roberts, Jude Law and Clive Owen as well, and was directed by Mike Nichols, who also directed Natalie in the stage play "The Seagull." The movie was about two London couples and their adventures in swapping partners. Law played Dan, a mediocre obituary writer who met Alice (Natalie) when he saved her life on a busy London street one day. After moving in together, Alice inspired Dan to write a book and while being photographed for the book jacket, Dan met Anna (Roberts) and instantly developed feelings for her. Upon being rejected, Dan tried to play a cruel joke on her, unknowingly setting her up with a dermatologist names Larry (Owen). At the 2005 Golden Globe Awards, Natalie picked up the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture. Her co-star, Clive Owen, picked up a Golden Globe in the supporting actor category. Other awards that Natalie won for her performance as Alice included the National Board of Review Award for Best Acting by an Ensemble (shared with Owen, Law and Roberts) and the San Diego Film Critics Society Award for Best Supporting Actress (both in 2004). She was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role (2005). Natalie was also nominated in the same category at the BAFTA Awards (2005), Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards (2005), Online Film Critics Society Awards (2005), and the Satellite Awards (2005). Her 2005 nomination for Choice Female Actress at the Teen Choice Awards was for her performances in "Closer" and "Garden State".

Natalie picked up another Teen Choice Award nomination in the category of Choice Actress: Drama/Action Adventure Movie (2006).

Natalie did a great job in "Where the Heart Is" playing a strong female character that didn't let the setbacks in life hold her back permanently. Novalee raised a daughter with the help of the local townspeople, not accepting handouts from the neighborhood, but allowing them to pitch in when needed. Though it would be expected (and understandable), Novalee did not have a moment of complete self-pity, where she thought her life was over.
