Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
"Independence Day" was a critical and box office success when it was released in 1996. The highest grossing film of the year, "Independence Day" brought in over three hundred million dollars in the US and another five hundred million internationally on a budget of seventy-five million dollars.
The movie continued the upward trajectory of Will Smith, who enjoyed a string of successes in the mid 1990s, and helped Bill Pullman, whose previous experience was primarily in comedies, break into the action genre. Jeff Goldblum had established himself as a major box office draw three years earlier with Stephen Spielberg's "Jurassic Park".
"Independence Day" gave viewers death and destruction on a massive scale as aliens invade the planet and systematically destroy major cities with city-sized spacecrafts. Some survivors in the United States, including US President Whitmore (Pullman), cable repairman David Levinson (Goldblum), and Marine Captain Steven Hiller (Smith) converge on Area 51, where previously captured aliens are being examined.
Hiller and Levinson engage in a risky mission to fly a previously captured spacecraft to the alien mothership to disable the shields protecting the alien fleet. Whitmore, a former fighter pilot, gathers dozens of pilots in preparation for an attack on the alien spaceship heading toward area 51. Whitmore delivers the above speech as the pilots prepare for combat. The mission to the mothership is a success and air forces from all over the world destroy the invading force.
