Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What Academy Award winning actress stars as Judy Maxwell?

Answer: Barbra Streisand

Barbra Streisand is one of the most accomplished women in show business. She is one of the few performers with an Oscar, Grammy, Emmy and Tony Award. Streisand is one of the most successful singers of all time, selling over 70 million records during her career. "What's Up Doc?" was done fairly early in her career, but after her Oscar Winning debut in "Funny Girl" (1968).
Sally Field won Academy Awards in 1980 and 1985, while Susan Sarandon won in 1996 and Diane Keaton won in 1978. All three have played goofball characters during their careers,
Judy Maxwell is one of several goofball characters that Streisand played in the early 1970s. Judy has attended (but never graduated from) educational institutions all across the country. Disaster generally follows in Judy's wake.
2. What comedic actress had her feature film debut in "What's Up, Doc?"?

Answer: Madeline Kahn

Madeline Kahn would go on to become a regular in the films of Mel Brooks, including "Young Frankenstein" and "Blazing Saddles." She was nominated for an Academy Award for "Blazing Saddles". Kahn has won both an Emmy and Tony Award.
Kahn plays Eunice Burns, the fiancé of Howard Bannister. She is extremely uptight and Howard (Ryan O'Neal) winds up dumping her. She lands on her feet with millionaire Frederick Larrabee (Austin Pendleton).
Kane got her start in "Carnal Knowledge" (1971). Rivers debuted in "Once Upon A Coffeehouse" (1965). Meara's first film was "The Out of Towners" (1970).
3. What Cole Porter song is sung during the credits of "What's Up Doc?"?

Answer: You're The Top

"You're The Top" is used on both the opening and closing credits, with Streisand singing solo at the start and singing with Ryan O'Neal at the end. Both "Anything Goes" and "I Get A Kick Out of You" are heard in the film as Muzak, but neither is used during the credits. Streisand does sing "As Time Goes By" - but near the middle of the film; plus it was written by Herman Hupfeld.
4. What city is "What's Up Doc?" set in?

Answer: San Francisco

The film makes great use of the hills of San Francisco with a spectacular car chase at the end, with most of the cast winding up in San Francisco Bay. Sorrell Brooke (later famous as Boss Hogg on "The Dukes of Hazzard") nearly drowned filming the scene. The final chase scene, which was a spoof of "Bullitt", cost $1 million and took 19 days and 32 stuntmen.
The San Francisco Hilton was the fictional "Bristol Hotel". The plate glass window scene was shot at 23rd and Balboa. For a goofball Streisand film set in New York, watch "For Pete's Sake" (1974).
5. What academic discipline does Ryan O'Neal's character, Howard Bannister, teach?

Answer: Music History

Howard Bannister teaches music history at the Iowa Conservatory of Music, located in Ames. His life has been rather dull until he meets Judy Maxwell. Bannister is at the conference in San Francisco to deliver a paper on his theory regarding the musical properties of ancient rocks, and applying for a $20,000 grant to continue his research.
6. The main plot of "What's Up Doc?" centers around four plaid overnight bags. What is NOT one of the items contained in the bags?

Answer: A golden statue

The jewelry collection belongs to Mrs. Van Hoskins. The top-secret documents belong to a mysterious Mr Smith and are sought by a government agent named Mr Jones. The igneous rocks belong to Howard, and he hopes to use them to prove his theories about ancient music.
7. What terrible place does Judy wind up sending Eunice to at 459 Dirella Street?

Answer: Dockyards

The address turns out to be a rather seedy looking building on the docks, where Eunice finds a group of thugs beating Sorrell Brooke to within an inch of his life. She proceeds to take the thugs to Larrabee's home at 888 Russian Hill, where all sorts of craziness ensues. The Dirella Street scene was shot at Pier 70.
8. Who turns out to be related to the judge at the end of "What's Up Doc?"?

Answer: Judy

"Hello, Daddy" are Judy's words right before the bench collapses. Judge Maxwell was played by Liam Dunn, a veteran character actor. Mel Brooks liked his performance in "What's Up Doc?" and gave Dunn roles in "Blazing Saddles" and "Young Frankenstein". Sadly, Dunn died in April of 1976; he was only 59.
9. Howard ends up winning the grant from the Larrabee Foundation.

Answer: True

Judy exposes Professor Hugh Simon (Kenneth Mars) as a plagiarist who stole from an obscure Swiss musicologist. Larrabee rips up the check and apologizes to Bannister. This is right after they discover they had won a $20,000 reward for the return of the stolen jewelry, but had to pay $19,950 for all the mayhem Judy caused.
10. When Judy says "Love means never having to say you're sorry," how does Howard respond?

Answer: "That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard."

The line is from "Love Story" of course, which O'Neal had starred in with Ali McGraw two years earlier. It is the second time that O'Neal delivered it as the last line of a film. "Love means never having to say you're sorry" was ranked as number 13 among the AFI "100 Greatest Quotes".
