Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "The Bartender's Tale," Lillian, a new waitress Sam hired, leads everyone in a song called "The _____ Cliffs of Dover." What color completes the title?

Answer: White

"The White Cliffs of Dover" was a World War Two song written by Walter Kent and Nat Burton. Vera Lynn made a famous recording in 1942. The White Cliffs of Dover are an area on the England coast that faces the Strait of Dover and France.
2. In "Fools and Their Money," what song do Sam and Woody sing because it was an old trick Coach used to keep from carrying a grudge?

Answer: Home on the Range

"Home on the Range" was written by Dr. Brewster M. Higley in 1872 or 1873. Higley was from Kansas, and in 1947 it became the Kansas state song.

Woody was upset that Sam didn't place a bet with a bookie and then wouldn't give Woody his car. Sam told him Coach had an old trick to sing "Home on the Range" together for thirty minutes. Coach had told him that one couldn't do that and hold a grudge.
3. In "Suspicion," Carla is tired, so Sam turns the jukebox on to a song that gives Carla energy, and she dances around the bar. In the original airing of this episode, what show did she dance to?

Answer: Shout

"Shout" was written and recorded by the Isley Brothers. However, due to copywriter law issues in the current re-airings of the show, it was replaced with "My Mind is Gone." "My Mind is Gone" was written by Peter Williams and performed by Lil' Ed and the Blue Imperials.

Sam turns on the song, and Carla starts to dance. Carla dances over to the jukebox and unplugs it, and warns Sam to leave it off.
4. In "The Triangle," what Christmas song does Sam start to sing when Frasier starts to mention Sam's depression issue at the bar?

Answer: Jingle Bells

"Jingle Bells" was written by James Lord Pierpont in 1857. The original title was "The One Horse Open Sleigh."

Sam starts to sing it because he's afraid Frasier will mention that Sam is impotent and that the others in the bar can hear. Sam is making the whole depression thing up to help Frasier at Diane's urging, but he still is concerned that even talking about not being able to have sex will cause him not to be able to have sex.
5. What Johnny Mathis song does Cliff sing to Carla in the car after the postman's ball?

Answer: Misty

"Misty" was written in 1954 by Errol Garner as an instrumental. Later, lyrics were added by Johnny Burke. The song was Johnny Mathis' signature song.

Carla told Cliff that Diane told her she wanted a man to sing it to her while running his fingers up and down her arm. Cliff falls for it, and when Diane returns to the car, he starts to run his finger along Diane's arm while singing "Misty" to her. Diane kicks him out of his car and drives off with Carla and Lucas (another postal worker who was Carla's date), leaving Cliff behind.
6. In "Second Time Around," when Frasier and Candi want to get married, Woody plays the piano but doesn't play "The Wedding March." What does he play?

Answer: Heart and Soul

"Heart and Soul" was written by Hoagy Carmichael and Frank Loesser in the 1930s.

Frasier, hearing the music says, "Frasier would have hated it. Fras thinks it's swell." Woody Harrelson does know how to play the piano.
7. In the cold opening of "Dark Imaginings," Norm sings, "Goodnight Ladies" with a group; what kind of group was it?

Answer: Barbershop Quartet

Barbershop Quartet has four parts: lead, melody, tenor, bass, and baritone. They always sing a cappella as well. After one of the singers gets mad and quits the group, the other three try to find a replacement, and Norm says it was always a dream to sing with them. After they sing "Goodnight Ladies," they want to hire him, but Norm isn't interested because of how the dream has been fulfilled.
8. In "Save the Last Dance for Me," what is the song that Nick and Carla dance to when they win the Boston Poppers reunion dance contest?

Answer: Unchained Melody

All four songs listed were by The Righteous Brothers.

Nick and Carla were going to go together, but then they got into a fight; and Nick took his wife Loretta, and Carla went with Sam. But after losing the contest, Nick said it was because his partner was lousy and wanted to show them how he and Carla danced together. The song he asked them to play was "Unchained Melody."
9. What movie theme do Carla, Sam, Woody, Cliff, and Norm hum after Sam feels terrible about hurting Diane?

Answer: The Magnificent Seven

"The Magnificent Seven" was a 1960s Western movie starring Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter, James Coburn, and Horst Buchholz.

Carla, Sam, Woody, Cliff, and Norm like to watch the movie together when it's on, and Diane wants to join them. She says it would be great to compare it to the original Japanese film "Seven Samurai." However, they don't invite her, and she tells them she feels like an alien and then runs out of the bar, telling Sam, "I just want to be left alone." Carla starts humming the theme, and soon everyone joins in, and they leave to watch the movie.
10. In "The Proposal," when Sam and Diane are out on the boat, what song does Sam whistle?

Answer: Popeye the Sailor Man

"Popeye, the Sailor Man," was written by Samuel "Sammy" Lerner as the theme song for Popeye.

The main words to the song are:
"I'm Popeye the Sailor Man
I'm Popeye the Sailor Man
I'm strong to the finich
Cause I eats me spinach
I'm Popeye the Sailor Man."

Sam tells Diane that that song always plays in his head when he's out on the boat. After Diane turns down Sam's proposal, he gets angry and makes her jump in the water. However, he fishes her out, leaves her on the big boat, and takes the dinghy. She tells him, "Sam, Sam Malone if you leave me out here all alone, you are the most despicable creature on earth." Sam replies with a famous Popeye quote, "I yam what I yam, and that's all that I yam," and whistles the song's last line again as he rows away.
11. In "Spellbound," Nick Tortelli has violins playing what song?

Answer: As Time Goes By

"As Time Goes By" was written by Herman Hupfreld in 1931 and was popularized in 1942 when it was in the movie "Casablanca."

Nick tries to get Diane because he thinks Sam stole Loretta. Then when that doesn't work, he tries to get Loretta, then he tries for Carla. Diane returns, and he tries to get her again, and she convinces him to go after Loretta.
12. In "Dinner at Eightish," what song do Frasier and Lilith sing but stop when Diane joins them?

Answer: Our House

"Our House" was written by Graham Nash in 1970 and performed by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

Lilith and Frasier have moved in together and invited Sam and Diane for dinner. Diane proposes a toast to "your house," which prompts Frasier to play "Our House." He and Lilith sing, but when Diane joins in, they stop, and Frasier says, "et cetera, et cetera."
13. When Frasier's college friend comes to the bar, they sing, "Three Little Maids from School are We." This song is from a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta; which one?

Answer: The Mikado

"The Mikado" was written by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan in 1885. When they were in Oxford, Simon Finch-Royce (John Cleese) played Pitti-Sing and Frasier played Yum-Yum.

Yum-Yum was a girl that Nanki-Poo was in love with. Nanki-Poo was a poor minstrel singer. Yum-Yum, Pitti-Sing and Peep-Bo were all wards of Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner of Titipu (the fictional town in Japan where the show is set).
14. In "Cheers: The Motion Picture," Diane uses which Richard Wagner piece for the music in the movie they make?

Answer: The Ride of the Valkyries

Woody's parents are concerned about Woody living in Boston and want him to return home. The gang creates a movie to show them that Boston is a good place and Woody should stay.
15. What song do the elderly Sam and Diane dance to at the end of "I Do, Adieu?"

Answer: What'll I Do?

"What'll I Do?' was written by Irving Berlin in 1923. All the wrong choices were also written by Berlin, who, during his career, wrote an estimated 1500 songs.

Sam and Diane have decided not to get married so that Diane can finish her novel (and because Shelley Long decided to leave the show now that her five-year contract was up). The final scene with Sam and Diane (as an elderly couple) shows them dancing in the house they bought in the previous episode.

Shelley Long would reprise her role as Diane Chambers in the finale and participate in the 200th Anniversary show, but after this episode, she was no longer a regular cast member.
