Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Where Everybody Knows Your Name" is a popular tv theme song. Who sang it?

Answer: Gary Portnoy

Gary Portnoy also co-wrote the song with Judy Hart-Angelo. Portnoy is from Long Island, NY. With Hart-Angelo, he also wrote the theme songs for "Punky Brewster" and "Mr. Belvedere."
2. In the season one episode, "Truth or Consequences," who passes out as she starts singing "People"?

Answer: Diane Chambers

Carla and Diane are trying to work out their problems with each other. Carla makes a drink called "Leap into an open grave," which Diane drinks a lot of. After Carla makes up a story about Sam fathering one of her children, Diane starts to sing "People" and then passes out.
3. In "One For the Book," Buzz, a war vet, is sad when no one else from his troop shows up for the reunion. The gang at Cheers offer to be his pals so he won't feel as alone. Which song do they sing that was made famous in WWI?

Answer: Hinky Dinky Parlez-Vous

"Hinky Dinky Parlez-Vous" is also known as "Inky Pinky Parlez Vous" and as "Mademoiselle from Armentières." There are two suggestions regarding what "Inky Pinky" refers to: what children in Scotland call parsnip and potato cakes or the sound of bed springs. The second is usually preferred as the soldiers in World War I often had sex on their minds.
4. In "Father Knows Last," Carla is pregnant again and tries to trick Marshall Lipton (Mark King) into thinking he's the father. What song do Diane and the others sing at the end of the show as Carla is leaving the bar?

Answer: You'll Never Walk Alone

"You'll Never Walk Alone," along with the other choices, are from Roger and Hammerstein's "Carousel." It is a very motivational song, and after Carla told Marshall the truth and he left, she was feeling down. She was single, had four children already, and now one on the way (fathered by her ex Nick).

The gang gathered money in a pitcher to help her, and Diane started to sing, and the others joined in while Carla, with her head held high, left the bar.
5. In the cold opening of "Someone Single, Someone Blue," Glen demonstrates that he knows all the words to what long-running western tv series?

Answer: Bonanza

"Bonanza" ran from 1959-1973. Coach told Sam that some guy he talked to in the bar was on the Titanic. Sam told him to call him over when someone has exciting stories like that. Coach tells him that Glen (Paul Wilson, who later played semi-regular Paul Krapence) told him something interesting. Glen says he knows all the words to the "Bonanza" theme song and then proceeds to sing it.
6. In "Personal Business," Cliff sings which Elvis song when Norm calls Vera while the two are separated?

Answer: Are You Lonesome Tonight

Norm announced earlier in the episode that he and Vera had separated, and he had an apartment in a bad area. At first, they all encourage him to look for another woman. However, when he sits at the bar wondering what Vera is doing, they encourage him to call her. While Norm is dialing, Cliff is singing "Are You Lonesome Tonight."
7. In the cold opening of "Manager Coach," Carla is on the phone trying to sing her baby to sleep, and the rest of the bar joins in singing which song?

Answer: Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ra

Everyone sings the song nicely, and then Carla announces that the baby is asleep. The rest of them get excited and start cheering, and the baby wakes up crying.
8. In "Where There's a Will..." when Malcolm Krammer (George Gaynes) is mixing drinks blindfolded, what song does he sing?

Answer: I Wish That I'd Been Born in Borneo

"I Wish That I'd Been Born in Borneo" was recorded by Eddie Cantor in 1921. George Gaynes was born in 1917, so assuming his character was around the same age, he might have heard the song growing up as a child.
9. In "Coach Buries a Grudge," Coach learns that his friend T-bone, who just died, made a pass on Coach's wife years ago. What song does Diane sing to keep Coach and the other men from hanging T-bone's cardboard cutout?

Answer: Amazing Grace

"Amazing Grace" was published in 1779. The words were written by John Newton, a former slave trader in England turned abolitionist. According to the "Dictionary of American Hymnology,' the song is John Newton's "spiritual autobiography." Today it is used in both Christian and secular communities.
10. When Norm and Vera are trying to have a child in "Rebound: Part 1," what do Cliff and the other guys sing when Nora goes home after Vera calls?

Answer: Let's Do it, Let's Fall in Love

"Let's Do It" was written in 1928 by Cole Porter. It was first used in the Broadway musical "Paris" and sung by Iréne Bordoni. It has since been recorded by many singers such as Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra.
11. Which Rodgers-Hart song is repeatedly sung mostly by Coach in both parts of "Coach in Love?"

Answer: Isn't It Romantic

"Isn't It Romantic" was written in 1932 for the movie "Love Me Tonight." Coach sings it because he's in love with Nina throughout the two-part episode. In the end, Diane and Sam are singing it as they leave.
12. In "Diane Meets Mom," which male at the bar do they sing "Happy Birthday" to?

Answer: Norm

"Happy Birthday" was published in 1893 and may have been written by sisters Patty and Mildred Hill. It is the most recognized song in the English language according to the 1998 "Guinness World Records" book.
13. In "An American Family," what song does Nick sing to Carla in Sam's office?

Answer: Call Me Irresponsible

"Call Me Irresponsible" is a 1962 song by Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn. Jackie Gleason sang it in the movie "Papa's Delicate Condition," and it won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1964.

Nick sings it to Carla because he's trying to convince her to turn custody of their oldest son Anthony to him and Loretta.
14. A "Cheers" original song: According to Coach's song to learn about the geography of Albania, what Sea does Albania border on?

Answer: Adriatic

Coach and Sam have decided to become high school graduates. Sam only needs one class - geography. So they take that class together, but while Coach gets As in the class by studying hard, Sam is sleeping with the teacher.

Diane convinces Sam to stop, but he's scared he can't pass if he stops. However, he does, and while Coach is angry when he first learns what is going on, he helps Sam. Coach tells Sam you can learn anything by putting it to music. He then sings, "Albania, Albania, you border on the Adriatic."

And yes, Albania does border the Adriatic Sea.
15. In "Cheerio, Cheers," what does Carla sing when she learns Diane is moving to Europe with Frasier?

Answer: I Believe

"I Believe" was written in 1953 by Ervin Drake, Jimmy Shirl, and Al Stillman. Frankie Laine did the most popular recording.
