Vivienne Segal starred as Vera, opposite Gene Kelly as Joey, in the 1940 production of "Pal Joey". Cast recordings did not happen in those days, the first was "Oklahoma" in 1943, so it was not until 1951 when Columbia records did a studio cast recording of the show, with Harold Lang as Joey, that Vivienne got a chance to record the song.

This album was so successful that it spawned a revival of the show with Segal and Lang in the starring roles.

Answer: Sentimental Journey

In a long and successful career Doris Day made thirty nine films, recorded over six hundred songs, received a Grammy and a Golden Globe and earned a reputation as a wholesome girl next door. "Sentimental Journey" recorded in 1945 with the Les Brown band was her first successful recording, and became something of an anthem of desire for American troops wanting to return home after World War II.

Answer: Mel Torme

Mel Torme is known for his jazz singing, arranging and composing. He co-wrote "The Christmas Song" with Bob Wells. He made several recording with The Artie Shaw Orchestra, and for two years wrote songs and arrangements for "The Judy Garland Show". His best known recording is probably "Mountain Greenery".

Answer: The Jezebel of Jazz

In common with many other singers of the period Anita O'Day first came to prominence as a big band singer. She was with Gene Krupa for 2 years from 1941 to 1943 and with Stan Kenton for eleven months in 1944. She was noted for her sense of rhythm, and also her style.

She refused to adhere to the stereotype of "girl band singer" usually wearing a band jacket and skirt rather than evening dress. Her drug problems surfaced in 1947 when she served a 90 day jail term for marijuana possession. There was a further arrest and not guilty verdict in 1952 and an arrest and six month jail sentence for heroin possession in 1953.

Rod Stewart started his career with The Jeff Beck Group and in 1969 joined The Faces. At the same time he also pursued a solo career and 1969 saw his first solo album, "An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down". In 2002 the gravel voiced rocker turned his attention to The Great American Songbook eventually producing four CDs. "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" appeared on volume 2, issued in 2003.

The disc also has Stewart dueting with Queen Latifah on "As Time Goes By".

Answer: The History Boys

"The History Boys" was adapted for film by Alan Bennet from his play of the same name. The play won the 2005 Oliver Award for Best New Play and the 2006 Tony Award for Best Play. Rufus Wainwright sings "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" on the soundtrack recording released in 2006.

Answer: The Muppets

The Muppet Show was created by Jim Henson and ran for five series from 1976. Its popularity was such that many celebrities appeared on it, and by the time it ended around 100 guest stars had appeared. In episode 119, which came towards the end of Season 5, Wayne begins to sing to Wanda.

She is literally bewitched by the song, turning into Blue Frackle about halfway through the first verse.

Answer: Oscar Petersen

Oscar Petersen, with Barney Kessel on guitar and Ray Brown on bass, recorded the song on "Oscar Petersen plays Richard Rogers". Petersen is widely regarded as one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time. In a long career he made over 200 recordings, won seven Grammy awards and played hundreds of live concerts. "Night Train" is probably his best known album.

Sinead O'Connor recorded it in 1993 on her album "Am I Not Your Girl", Carly Simon in 1990 on "My Romance" and Linda Ronstadt in 1996 on "For Sentimental Reasons".

Answer: Chick Webb

Ella began singing regularly with Chick Webb in 1935 and was with his band when her big hit "A Tisket A Tasket" was recorded. Chick Webb died in 1939 and Ella Fitzgerald took over the band, renaming it Ella Fitzgerald and her Famous Orchestra. She left them in 1942 to pursue her solo career.

In 1956 she recorded "The Cole Porter Songbook", which was the first of her much praised Great American Songbook recordings.
