Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lulu won the Eurovision song contest in 1969 with this very noisy song, what was it called?

Answer: Boom Bang-A-Bang

OK, this is probably not too well known in America but it did reach number two in England and number one in other European countries. It was one of three songs that tied for first place in the contest that year.
'Bing Tiddle-Tiddle Bong' was a parody of 'Boom Bang-A-Bang' by Monty Python.

#Useless Information# This record was one of a number of recordings that were banned by the BBC during the Gulf war in 1991.
2. Reaching number two in the US and number three in the UK, who had a hit with 'Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)' in 1966? (Not Nancy Sinatra)

Answer: Cher

Written by Sonny Bono and taken from the album 'The Sonny Side of Cher' the recording was a hit in many parts of the world. The reference to Nancy Sinatra? She also released a version in 1966.

#Useless Information# This was Cher's first top three hit in the UK and her last until the 'Shoop Shoop Song' 22 years later.
3. This young lady was known in the 1970s for her leather 'cat-suits', not only was she a singer but she appeared, a number of times, in 'Happy Days' as Leather Tuscadero. One of her biggest hits in the UK was '48 Crash'. Her name is? *Correct spelling is essential!*

Answer: Suzi Quatro

Although Suzi Quatro never really made an impression in her home country (Born in Detroit, Michigan) she was very popular in the UK and Europe. 'Devil Gate Drive', 'Can the Can' and 'If You Can't Give Me Love' being another three of her most popular songs.

She appeared in seven episodes of 'Happy Days' between 1977 and 1979.
4. 'Pistol shots rang out in a bar-room night' is the first line of a noisily titled Bob Dylan song, but which one is it?

Answer: Hurricane

A song protesting about the imprisonment of Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter for the murder of a barman in New Jersey in 1966.
5. 1969 and there was 'Something in the Air' but what was the name of the 'one-hit-wonder' band who had a hit with this track?

Answer: Thunderclap Newman

Thunderclap Newman was a group created by Pete Townshend (the guitarist from The Who) to sing songs written by John 'Speedie' Keene (a 'roadie' for the Who.)
'Something in the Air' was number one for three weeks in the UK and was their only top 40 hit.
6. "The kids in Bristol are sharp as a pistol When they do". What did they do according to The Dovells in 1961?

Answer: Bristol Stomp

This version reached number two on the Billboard charts in 1961 and was about a new dance craze called 'The Stomp'.
7. Both David (Lord) Sutch and Jay Hawkins adopted the same noisy name, what was this?

Answer: screaming

Screaming Lord Sutch - never really a lord - a singer (although not very 'vocally talented', according to himself), Radio Station owner in the 1960s and politician for the Monster Raving Loony party. Probably best known for his song 'Jack The Ripper' which was released in 1963 and immediately banned by the BBC.

Screaming Jay Hawkins - Real name Jalacy Hawkins - was born in Ohio in 1929. His best known record being (of course) 'I Put a Spell on You', which was released in 1956. Hawkins' version did not show on the charts although a number of later cover versions have.
8. In 1971 a 'Glam - Rock' band fronted by Marc Bolan had a UK number one hit with 'Get it On' this was re-titled for the US market as 'Bang a Gong (Get it On)' and reached number ten. Which group was this?

Answer: T Rex

'Get it On' was the band's third big UK hit. A cover version by 'Power Station' in 1985 also hit number one in the UK but reached number 9 in the US, one place higher than the original.

#Useless information# Marc Bolan is credited with being the first 'Glam-Rock' star after the band's appearance on 'Top of the Pops' in 1972.
9. Neil Diamond, in 1976 reached the number eight spot in the US and number thirteen in the Uk with a song entitled 'Beautiful ...'. A beautiful what?

Answer: Noise

Neil Diamond began his successful career writing songs in the 1960s. Included in this portfolio are such delights as 'I'm a Believer' which was a number one hit for The Monkees in 1966. This record stayed at number one for seven weeks and became the best selling US record for 1967.

# Useless information # Neil Diamond is currently the third most successful recording artist in the 'Adult Contemporary' section of the Billboard charts.
10. And back where we started with Lulu. Lulu's first hit was another noisy record entitled 'SHOUT'. How old was she when this track was released?

Answer: 15

Yes, only 15 and with a voice like that. Recorded with her, short lived, backing group (The Luvvers) 'Shout' reached number seven in the UK but only 94 in the US. Originally recorded by the Isley Brothers in 1959 the track has been covered many times.
