Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Allman Brothers song included the lyrics "Don't fly, Mister Bluebird, I'm just walking down the road. Early morning sunshine tells me all I need to know"?

Answer: Blue Sky

Written by Dickey Betts and released on the ABB's 1972 "Eat a Peach" album, this tune has been covered by numerous other artists, including Joan Baez. It remains one of the band's most requested songs on classic rock radio stations.
2. Stephen Stills wrote this ballad while on a boat trip after his divorce. It rose to number 18 on the US charts after Crosby, Stills & Nash released it on their 1982 album "Daylight Again". What is the title of this classic?

Answer: Southern Cross

Jimmy Buffett and others have covered "Southern Cross" and it is still a staple at CSN concerts. The studio recording included backup vocals by Art Garfunkel.
The other three songs are still performed live but were never released as singles.
3. "Little darling, it's been a long cold lonely winter" is a line from which Beatles song?

Answer: Here Comes the Sun

George Harrison wrote this well known track for the "Abbey Road" album. The original recording was not released as a single so it did not make an appearance on the charts. "Wheel in the Sky" is a song by Journey and the other two are also Beatles tunes.
4. What 1966 chart topper by Donovan was heard in a 2010 Honda Accord commercial?

Answer: Sunshine Superman

This British singer/songwriter was a frontrunner in the 1960's psychedelic movement. Release was delayed several months in the UK due to a contract dispute with a former record label. Some stations in the US banned airplay because of possible references to drugs. ("Sunshine" was another name for LSD.)
5. Eric Clapton and Guns n Roses are two of several artists who've had hits with this Bob Dylan song. Which 1973 composition, written about the feelings of a disillusioned sheriff, am I describing?

Answer: Knocking on Heaven's Door

The song was written for the soundtrack of "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid" and Dylan's recording went to number 18 on the Billboard charts. The Guns n Roses version topped out at number two on European charts, while Clapton's cover reached number 12 on the Billboard list.
All of the incorrect answers are Dylan tunes and like many of his works, remain favorite cover choices for other artists.
6. The 1995 "Revenge" album by Janis Ian included what haunting love song that was featured in a popular story line on the American soap opera "General Hospital"?

Answer: When Angels Cry

The story of Robin Scorpio and Stone Cates became one of the most loved in the long history of the show, and the song was played on six episodes that detailed Stone's death from AIDS.
Well known for raising social awareness through her work, Janis made an appearance on the show and the story line sparked a best selling book and several television specials about HIV.
7. Which 1970 Creedence Clearwater Revival hit was actually written about the turmoil surrounding Washington and the Viet Nam war, rather than the weather event implied by the title?

Answer: Who'll Stop the Rain

John Fogerty wrote the song after returning home from Woodstock. Lyrics such as "Good men through the ages tryin' to find the sun" seem to reflect the confusion and sense of frustration that were characteristic among young people at the time.
Rolling Stone magazine lists this classic at number 188 on its list of 500 all time greatest songs.
Movie fans may remember it from the soundtrack of (among other films) "Forrest Gump."
8. Ozzy Osbourne's 1983 album of the same title was certified platinum in the US but achieved notoriety when a murderer in Canada claimed the content had driven him to commit the crime. Name the song that begins with the line "Screams break the silence waking from the dead of night..."

Answer: Bark at the Moon

The "Bark at the Moon" single peaked at Numbers 21 and 9 on the UK and US charts respectively. Although Bob Daisley and Jake E. Lee later revealed that they co-wrote this and several other tracks on the album, the original liner notes listed Osbourne as the sole composer.
All three incorrect choices are also Black Sabbath or Ozzy Osbourne songs.
9. Ronnie Van Zant famously asked "What song is it you wanna hear?" on Lynyrd Skynyrd's "One More From the Road" tour. The question sparked an audience response that led to a nearly 12 minute live version of the song many consider to be the greatest rock anthem of all time. What is the name of the 1973 tune that propelled the band to stardom?

Answer: Freebird

The opening line of "Freebird" was inspired by Allen Collins's girlfriend when she asked him the question during an argument. It has been included in dozens of "best of" lists, including "Guitar World" magazine's list of all time greatest guitar solos.
Shouting the name of the song at concerts has become something of a tradition with many classic rock fans. (I even heard someone yell "Play Freebird" at a Neil Young concert a couple of years ago.)
10. The final original album by this heavy metal quartet, "In Through the Out Door" topped the US charts in 1979 and included a single that rose to number 21 the following year. "And the storm that I thought would blow over clouds the light of the love that I found" is a line from what Led Zeppelin song?

Answer: Fool in the Rain

Widely accepted as the original heavy metal band, "Rolling Stone" magazine named this quartet number 14 on its list of all time greatest artists. The Recording Industry Association of America lists Led Zeppelin as the second highest selling band of all time (behind the "other" British quartet, the Beatles).
Although perhaps best known for "Stairway to Heaven", the band enjoyed commercial success with a variety of releases including "Rock and Roll", "Immigrant Song" and "Dy'er Mak'er".
The group disbanded in 1980 after the death of John Bonham but surviving members continue to be recognized for achievement in music and charity work.
