And you know I'm only in it for the

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

"Loser" was a Grateful Dead song that originally appeared on lead guitarist Jerry Garcia's first solo album, "Garcia" released in 1972. The music was written by Garcia while his regular lyricist, Robert Hunter, provided the lyrics. It was first released by the Grateful Dead on their 1981 live album "Dead Set". Since then it has appeared on multiple live albums as part of the "Dick's Picks", "Road Trips", and "Dave's Picks" series among other releases.

The song tells the story of a gambler who is down on his luck and feels he just needs one winning hand to change things around.

The song debuted live in February 1971, almost a year before it first appeared on "Garcia". The Dead played it live almost 350 times over the next nearly 25 years with the last performance during that era on June 28, 1995, eleven days prior to their final show before Jerry Garcia died. It was also performed twenty years later to the day as part of their "Fare Thee Well" shows celebrating 50 years since the band first started. It was even performed at the first of their shows that I attended back in 1984, the first of nineteen times I heard it live. It was usually performed during the early to middle part of the first set.

These are the lyrics as published on the band's website. Two notes are mentioned there. Originally in the second verse he only asked for one gold dollar but at some point that was inflated up to ten. And after the first couple of years, the words "sweet Susie" were usually dropped, although Garcia occasionally forgot that and included them anyway.
