Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
The Beautiful South were formed in 1988 by Paul Heaton and Dave Hemingway following the break-up of their previous band, The Housemartins. The Housemartins were known for writing songs that had an overtly socialist theme, with lyrics that were gently subversive, a thread that was taken into the new group. The Beautiful South's first album, "Welcome to the Beautiful South", was recorded in 1988 for release the following year, and saw three singles, with the first, "Song for Whoever", reaching number two in the UK charts in June 1988. The song is seen as typical of the faintly subversive nature of the group's output, as it is sung from the point of view of a songwriter who romances a number of different women solely to gain material for love songs, with a total of ten different girls' names included in the lyrics.
In 1999, German singer Lou Bega recorded his debut album, "A Little Bit of Mambo", with the first single released in April of that year. The single was a version of "Mambo No. 5", an instrumental jazz track originally recorded by Cuban bandleader Perez 'Prez' Prado in 1950. Bega's version sampled the original track and married it to new lyrics, with the song released under the title "Mambo No. 5 (A Little Bit Of...)". The song is sung from the point of view of a man recounting his romantic conquests, with nine different girls named in the song. The song was a huge hit across Europe during 1999, reaching number one in most countries, including spending 20 weeks at number one in France, a record that the song held until 2013.
