Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Identify the song with these lyrics: "Well when you're sitting back In your rose pink Cadillac Making bets on Kentucky Derby Day I'll be in my basement room With a needle and a spoon And another girl to take my pain away."?

Answer: "Dead Flowers" (The Rolling Stones)

Buckmanboston said: "No one does country-rock like the Stones. From "Sticky Fingers", 1971."

As buckmanboston said, the song appeared on that 1971 Rolling Stones album--the fourth track of side two. Keith Richards and Mick Jagger are credited with writing the song. It was not released as a single. The lyrics of the song are relatively dark, including veiled references to heroin.

While there are attempts to show a country music influence, Mick Jagger (vocalist) thought there were other influences since "I'm a blues singer not a country singer." He felt that if Keith Richards (guitarist) would have given more of a country-like delivery it would have been more of a country song.
2. Identify the song with these lyrics: "My sister, she says she knows Elvis. She knows Jesus, John Lennon, and Cobain, personally. Oh, oh, but I'm too wise to believe my eyes 'Cause all I've seen just terrifies me And I believe they're coming back for me"

Answer: "Maybe Angels" (Sheryl Crow)

Buckmanboston said: "From the 1996 album 'Sheryl Crow'".

Sheryl Crow's self-titled album was actually her second one after "Tuesday Night Music Club" (1993). While several singles were released from the album "Maybe Angels" (the opening track) was not one of them. Sheryl Crow and Bill Bottrell were the composers of the song. "Maybe Angels" has suggestions about government conspiracies about UFOs in its lyrics.

The album was successful commercially, reaching Number Six on the US Billboard Top 200 chart and being certified triple platinum. In addition, the album was generally critically praised.
3. Identify the song from its lyrics: "She came in town and then she drove away Sunlight in her hair Indians scattered on dawn's highway bleeding Ghosts crowd the young child's fragile eggshell mind"

Answer: Peace Frog (The Doors)

Buckmanboston said: "From the great album 'Morrison Hotel-Hard Rock Cafe' As a child, Morrison and his family drove past a wreck on the highway, where several American Indians were injured. The image stuck with him."

"Peace Frog" was the fourth track of side on the 1970 Doors album. The song was not released as a single, but in France it was the B-side of "You Make Me Real", the only single released for the album. Jim Morrison and Robby Krieger were credited as the songwriters. The album was generally positively received and "Peace Frog" was sometimes singled out for praise. With that in mind, it is interesting that the song has not been released as a single.

Other references in the song are also related to Jim Morrison's (lead singer) life, including his 1967 on-stage arrest.
4. Identify the song with these lyrics: "Pedro lives out of the Wilshire Hotel He looks out a window without glass The walls are made of cardboard, newspapers on his feet- His father beats him 'cause he's too tired to beg"

Answer: "Dirty Blvd" (Lou Reed)

Buckmanboston said: "From 1989's 'New York'. After playing this song, a D.J. said Lou Reed can say more in a 3 minute song than others can say in a lifetime.'It's hard to run when a coat hanger beats you on the thigh'."

Lou Reed wrote and recorded "Dirty Blvd" for his 1989 album "New York". The song was at the top of the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks in 1989 for four weeks. The album as a whole received a good bit of critical acclaim upon its release. "Dirty Blvd" was the third song on side one of the album.

Lou Reed also served as the lead singer, guitarist, and main songwriter for the group, The Velvet Underground. Between his solo career and his work with the group, he would have had plenty of chances to express himself in a three-minute song.
5. Identify the song that has these lyrics: "I'd gladly lose me to find you I'd gladly give up all I had To find you I'd suffer anything and be glad I'd pay any price just to get you I'd work all my life and I will"

Answer: "Bargain" (The Who)

Buckmanboston said: "Another D.J. said this is the most romantic rock line she has ever heard."

"Bargain" appeared on the 1971 Who album "Who's Next". Pete Townsend wrote the song and also performed acoustic guitar, lead guitar, synthesizer, and co-led the vocals on it. "Bargain" was not released as a single but was the second song on side one of the album. The album wound reach Number Four on the US Billboard 200 chart.

Buckmanboston was correct that "Bargain" was intended as a love song, but a close listen will show that the subject of affection is God.
6. Identify the song that has these lyrics: "They hurt you at home and they hit you at school They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool Till you're so (...) crazy you can't follow their rules"

Answer: "Working Class Hero" (John Lennon)

Buckmanboston said: "I got censored. There is a word missing from these lyrics. From the album 'Plastic Ono Band'. I swear (pun intended) I used to hear this song on the radio."

"Working Class Hero" appeared on John Lennon's 1970 album "John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band", appearing as the fourth song on side one. In the UK, the song was the B-side to his single "Imagine". Described as one of the better of Lennon's political songs, the recording is simple with only Lennon's voice and an acoustic guitar.

"Working Class Hero" was one of several John Lennon songs that included profanity.
7. Identify the song that has these lyrics: "Now look at me baby-struggling to do everything right And then it all falls apart-When out go the lights I'm just a lonely pilgrim I walk this world in wealth I wanna know if it's you I don't trust 'Cause I damn sure don't trust myself"

Answer: "Brilliant Disguise" (Bruce Springsteen)

Buckmanboston said: "I was turned off by the video for this 1987 song, but when I sat down and actually listened to it, I thought it was great."

"Brilliant Disguise" appeared as the third song of side two off of Bruce's 1987 album "Tunnel of Love" "Brilliant Disguise" was also released as a single, reaching Number Five on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. The video focused on the idea of self-doubt as the singer wonders if he really knows his wife. There are parallels with Springsteen's personal life as he would divorce his then-wife Julianne Phillips in 1989.

The video was filmed in black and white and takes place in the kitchen of an ordinary house. The camera draws in closer to the singer/guitarist at the center who is the focus of the video. Buckmanboston doesn't seem to indicate what about the video was viewed negatively.
8. Identify the song that has these lyrics: "At home- drawing pictures Of mountaintops With him on top- Lemon yellow sun- Arms raised in a vee And the dead lay-in pools of maroon blood"

Answer: "Jeremy" by Pearl Jam

Buckmanboston said: "When you release albums like "10" and "Vs.", it's tough to keep up the pace. I like the other ones, but I see why Pearl Jam has lost some luster."

"Jeremy" did appear as the sixth track on Pearl Jam's 1991 album "Ten" (referenced by buckmanboston.) The song would not be released as a single until a few years later but did reach Number Five on the Billboard Modern Rock chart. Eddie Vedder wrote the lyrics for the song and Jeff Arnett composed the music. The song is based loosely on a true story of a teenager who committed suicide.

The album "Ten" was a monster hit, being certified 13 times platinum in the United States. I guest that buckmanboston was correct: the album would be a tough act to top.
9. IDentify the song that has these lyrics: "I'm married-I'm buried I wish I was like you Easily amused Find my nest of salt Everything is my fault"

Answer: "All Apologies" ( Nirvana)

Buckmanboston said: "I never even knew what he was saying until after he died and I looked at the lyrics."

"All Apologies" was actually the final single released by Nirvana before Kurt Cobain's death. The song would reach Number One on the US Alternative Airplay chart. It also appeared on Nirvana's 1993 album "In Utero", where it was the twelfth and final track on the album. Kurt Cobain composed the song.

"Weird Al" Yankovic's "Smells Like Nirvana", a parody of Nirvana's 1991 song "Smells Like Teen Spirit", made several references to Cobain's singing often making it difficult to understand song lyrics.
10. Identify the song that has these lyrics: "You say-Love is a temple Love a higher law You ask me to enter But then you make me crawl And I can't be holding on To what you've got When all you got is hurt"

Answer: "One" (U2)

Buckmanboston said: "In my opinion, U2's masterpiece, 'Achtung, Baby'"

"One", by U2, appeared on the 1991 album "Achtung Baby" three times, as the fifth, ninth, and eleventh tracks. Bono is credited as the lyricist and U2 as the composers. The song, released as a single, would reach Number Ten on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Proceeds from the single's sales were donated towards AIDS research. "Rolling Stone" magazine placed the song at 36 on its list "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time".

The album "Achtung Baby" would be certified eight times Platinum in the US and four times Platinum in the UK.
11. Identify the song that has these lyrics: "You may leave here For four days in space But when you return its the same old place"

Answer: "Eve Of Destruction" (Barry McGuire)

Buckmanboston said: "From the album 'Spirit of the 60's'(well that's the album I have). Can you imagine taking one of mankind's greatest achievements, and belittling it like that? The whole song is full of powerful quotes. It's regarded as the first protest song. 'You're old enough to kill, but not for voting'. Side note-'I Hate Myself And Want To Die' is the last studio recording by Nirvana, released on 'The Beavis And Butthead Experience', 1993. The lyrics are indecipherable."

"Eve of Destruction" would first appear on Barry McGuire's 1965 album of the same name, as the first song on side one. P. F. Sloan wrote the song. Technically, this version is a cover as the Turtles release a version of the song earlier the same year. McGuire's vocals (with backing from members of the Wrecking Crew) were intended as a rough cut before recording a more polished version. Producers decided that the rough delivery of the lyrics was right for the song and used that version. The song would reach Number One on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Barry McGuire would later switch his focus to Christian contemporary music. "Eve of Destruction" would be his only Top-40 hit of the 20th Century.
12. Identify the song that has these lyrics: "Boys, it looks, are ready to rumble The word on the street some heads are gonna tumble Blades gonna flash when streets gang clash In the avenue tonight"

Answer: "Lightning Strikes" (Aerosmith)

Buckmanboston said: "From 'Rock In A Hard Place' without Joe Perry. The rest of the album kinda stunk, 'Bitch's Brew' was O.K."

"Lightning Strikes" would reach Number 21 on the US Mainstream Rock chart. Steven Tyler, Jimmy Crespo and Richie Supa are credited as the songwriters for the song. The song would appear as the second song on side one of Aerosmith's 1982 album "Rock In a Hard Place". One might argue that this is Aerosmith's most successful song after guitarist Joe Perry left the group.

Perhaps reflecting buckmanboston's assessment, the album "Rock In a Hard Place" would only reach Gold certification (500,000 sales) in the United States.
13. Identify the song that has these lyrics: "I will never give in Until the day that I die I'll get myself some independence Carve out a future with my two bare hands"

Answer: "Spirit of '76" (The Alarm)

Buckmanboston: "One of my all time favorites. This band had a string of hits, but doesn't get much recognition."

The Alarm originated as a punk band known as the Toilets. Their song "Spirit of '76" would reach Number 22 on the UK Singles chart in 1986. The song also appeared on the 1985 album "Strength", as the fourth song on side one. The members of the band at the time were Mike Peters (vocals), David Sharp (guitars), Eddie MacDonald (bass). and Nigel Twist (drums).

As I hadn't heard of this band before playing buckmanboston's original quiz, I can say the band hadn't gotten much recognition from me. YMMV.
14. Identify the song that has these lyrics: "Hey Jack...I know what you're thinking That now's as good as any to start drinking Hey Scotty...Yeah...What's it gonna be A gin and tonic sounds might mighty good to me"

Answer: "You And Me and The Bottle Makes Three" (Big Bad Voodoo Daddy)

buckmanboston said: "From the great 1998 swing album."

The full title of the song is "You and Me and The Bottle Makes Three Tonight (Baby)". The song appeared as the fifth track on the 1998 album "Americana Deluxe". An excerpt from the song "Sobre las Olas" by Juventino Rosas appears in "You and Me and The Bottle Makes Three". The song would reach Number 31 on the US Alternative Airplay chart.

The album was the second by the group.
15. Identify the song that has these lyrics: "It's coming close The flames are now reaching my body Please won't you help me I feel like I'm slipping away It's hard to breath And my chest is a-heating Lord, Almighty-I'm burning a hole where I lay"

Answer: "Burning Love" (Elvis Presley)

Buckmanboston said: "My favorite song by the King!"

"Burning Love" was written by Dennis Linde. The 1972 recording of the song by Elvis Presley. The song reached Number Two on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart (the 40th and final song recorded by Elvis to do so during his lifetime). The song was also released as part of his 1972 compilation album "Burning Love and Hits from His Movies, Volume 2". The song would later be featured in his 1973 "Aloha from Hawaii" concert.

The electric guitar you can hear prominently in the song was performed by Dennis Linde, the composer. (I wonder if the electric guitar work played a role in buckmanboston enjoying this song?)
