Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one of these songs from the album "Smash" was not released as a homonymous single?

Answer: Smash

Despite of being the track which the album is titled after, the song "Smash" was never released as a homonymous single, although it figured as the second track of the single "Gotta Get away" (but it was a live version recorded in Australia). "Gotta Get Away", "Self Esteem" and "Come Out and Play" had much more success.
2. Not all the songs from the album "Smash" were original. What's the title of the only cover track?

Answer: Killboy Powerhead

"Killboy Powerhead" is a song originally written by the punk rock band Didjits from Illinois. The song first appeared in one of Didjits' album in 1991.
3. The album "Smash" sold better than the album "Americana".

Answer: True

"Smash" is The Offspring's album most sold worldwide with 14 million sales, followed by "Americana" with 10 million. Think also that "Smash" was released by an independent record label (Epitaph Records).
4. "I think of all the times that I tried to lend a hand I try to explain but you just don't understand" What song from the album "Smash" are these lyrics taken from?

Answer: What Happened to You?

They're the very last two lines of the song's lyrics. "What Happened to You" is the eleventh track of the album, and it is characterized by a Ska rhythm.
5. Except for "Time to Relax", what's the shortest song in the album "Smash"?

Answer: So Alone

It is "So Alone" with just 1 minute and 17 seconds. "Nitro (Youth Energy)" is 2 minutes and 26 seconds, "It'll Be a Long Time" is 2 minutes and 43 seconds and finally "Killboy Powerhead" is 2 minutes and 2 seconds.
6. Which record label released the album "Ixnay on the Hombre" in 1997?

Answer: Columbia Records, but only in the US

With "Ixnay on the Hombre" The Offspring passed to the major label Columbia records, which released the album in the United States. However it was Epitaph Records which released the album in Europe. The next album, "Americana", was released worldwide by Columbia Records.
7. The first song of the album "Ixnay on the Hombre", called "Disclaimer", is actually a spoken word piece. Who's speaking?

Answer: Jello Biafra

It is Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys. Greg Graffin is the singer of Bad Religion, while Dave Quackenbush is the singer of Vandals.
8. What is the word "Ixnay" a typical example of?

Answer: Pig Latin

They're all language games primarily used by children. "Ixnay" is the Pig Latin form of the word "Nix". Another common example of Pig Latin is the word "Amscray", from the real word "Scram".
9. In the hidden track of the album "Smash" we find the instrumental intro of a song that later officially appeared in "Ixnay on the Hombre". What's the title of that song?

Answer: Change the World

We find it some minutes after the end of the song "Smash". "Change the World" is the 14th and last track of "Ixnay on the Hombre".
10. A question for musicians: what guitar chord does the song "All I Want" of the album "Ixnay on the Hombre" start with?

Answer: F#minor

The studio version begins with a F#minor chord (it is actually a F#5 power-chord, but the full chord would be a F#minor). However, during many of their live concerts, Dexter and Noodles tune their guitars down, so it's easier for Dexter to sing notes not as high as in the studio versions.
11. During the first recording session of the album "Americana", The Offspring wanted to record a powerful guitar tone to emulate the raw feeling of the album "Smash". Who did The Offspring call as their first producer for "Americana"?

Answer: Vinnie Paul of Pantera

Vinnie Paul, back then the drummer of the trash metal band Pantera, was the choice of The Offspring. However things didn't go well, because Vinnie wanted to record guitar tones that were considered too heavy and raw by The Offspring's managers. In the end Vinnie was dismissed and the opposite way was chosen, so "Americana" turned out to be a really commercial album with a smoothed out guitar tone and overall feeling.
12. The album "Americana" is also an Enhanced CD, which contains such stuff as MTV music videos from "Ixnay on the Hombre" and also the karaoke videos of three songs (from the released album). Which is one of these three songs?

Answer: Staring at the Sun

The other two are "Pretty Fly (for a White Guy)" and "Why Don't You Get a Job". "Staring at the Sun" is also one of Dexter Holland's favourite songs when playing live.
13. Another question for musicians: what guitar amplifier (brand and model) has always been the main part of The Offspring's guitar tone?

Answer: MESA/Boogie Mark IV

MESA/Boogie Mark IV has been the first choice for many great musicians like Metallica and Dream Theater. The Dual Rectifier is more suited to nu-metal or death metal, while Marshalls (specially the JCM 800 model) have become famous for '80s rock and hard rock. Since the album "Splinter", The Offspring have started mixing MESA/Boogie and VHT amplifiers.
14. What band does the song "The Kids Aren't Alright" from the album "Americana" contain a clear allusion to?

Answer: Who

The song is an allusion to the Who song/documentary "The Kids Are Alright" (from "My Generation"). It was written after a visit Dexter Holland made to his old neighborhood, called Garden Grove (Orange County, California).
15. Which song of the album "Americana" was actually written during the making of "Ixnay on the Hombre"?

Answer: Pay the Man

"Pay the Man" was left out of the album "Ixnay on the Hombre" because it sounded too different from anything else the band had currently made. It's got a dark and psychedelic feeling.
