Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Go-Go began in the dance clubs of what East Coast city?

Answer: Washington D.C.

The style also became popular in some parts of Virginia and Maryland, but it never gained national attention except for a few exceptions.
2. Which singer and bassist developed Go-Go?

Answer: Chuck Brown

Born in 1934, Chuck Brown has had a long and varied career, which included his start as bassist for Jerry Butler & The Earls Of Rhythm and the Los Latinos. He later went solo and created a brand of funk with his backing band The Soul Searchers. Besides his original compositions, he has recorded notable Go-Go covers of Duke Ellington, Johnny Mercer and T-Bone Walker, among others.
3. Grover Washington, Jr.'s "Mister Magic" was a jazz-flavored Go-Go song.

Answer: True

Although Washington is not considered a Go-Go artist per se, The Brown/Washington project is pure Go-Go and has funk at its core. Both artists have stated that the song was derived from Gospel tradition. It was the title track of Washington's fourth album released in 1974 and paved the way for a broader appeal of both Brown and the flavor of funk he created.
4. One of the most recognizable Go-Go songs, "Bustin' Loose", was adopted as home run celebration song for what Major League baseball team in 2005?

Answer: Washington Nationals

Chuck Brown's masterwork is one of Go-Go's few national successes. It spent four weeks atop the "Billboard Magazine" R&B chart and climbed to number 34 on the Pop Singles chart. Upon their move from Montreal to Washington in 2005, the Nationals adopted a song by a local artist to enhance the team's local flavor and image.
5. Although Go-Go did produce a few hits, its power emerged during live performances. Which of the following musical techniques was most pervasive in live Go-Go?

Answer: Call-and-response

Call-and-response is just what it sounds like: a direct response to a musical note or sequence. It is not unique to Go-Go and its origin can be traced to Gospel, Santeria, and Africa culture, among others.
6. In 1986, a Go-Go song climbed to the top of the R&B charts a second time. Which song did the trick?

Answer: "Da Butt"

E.U.'s song did the trick, spending one week at the top of the R&B chart in 1986. It also crossed over, peaking at number 35 on the pop chart. Although the group recorded under the name E.U., its real, full name is Experience Unlimited, in homage to Jimi Hendrix.
7. 1986 also saw the release of the first Go-Go film, "Good To Go". Which unlikely singer starred in the cult favorite?

Answer: Art Garfunkel

Although Tom "Sex Bomb" Jones might seem an obvious choice, Art Garfunkel starred as a man framed for murder who tries to clear himself. If you'd like to see it, the film is available on video under the title "Short Fuse".
8. Which of the following bands was NOT a pivotal Go-Go band?

Answer: Zapp

Although Roger Troutman's Zapp was a noteworthy and popular funk band, they were not Go-Go. Although legends in the D.C. area, the other bands never quite achieved national success.
9. What happened in 1988 to partially derail the Go-Go movement?

Answer: Go-Go was banned in the Washington, D.C. area

Chuck Brown is alive, well and still performing as of late 2008 and Go-Go is still popular regionally and in hip-hop samples. Because of the violence associated with the sub-genre, however, D.C. banned it at most venues in 1988, a ban that still exists today. In fact, nearby Prince George's County, Maryland instituted a ban in 2007.
10. "Pump Me Up" is one of Go-Go's most sampled and re-recorded songs. What Go-Go artist originally recorded it?

Answer: Trouble Funk

Trouble Funk did the original, although the song only became a local hit. Other artists noticed and Mel recorded a reworked version of the song, while Cool J's "Rock The Bells" and M/A/R/R/S's "Pump Up The Volume" sample it.
