Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Believe it or not, bagpipe music was not originally designed to be played by more than one person at a time. What is traditional bagpipe music called?

Answer: piobaireachd

Pronounced "peeb-rock", this is freestyle music. Piobair means "piper". Eachd means "the art of". So "piobaireachd" means "the art of the piper".
2. Bagpipe music is designed to have a repeated melody that quickly moves in the low register from one note to the next one up from it. What is this melody called?

Answer: birl

During a birl, the player goes from low "A" to low "G". It would be similar to the first few notes of the theme to "Jaws".
3. One reason bagpipe songs might sound alike is that the bagpipe can only play a limited number of notes. Most of them are played on the chanter. How many notes can a chanter play?

Answer: 9

It can also play two tenor drones and a bass drone. The notes are G, A, B, C#, D, E, F#, G prime, and A prime.
4. The two major categories of bagpipe music are Cèol Mor and Cèol Beag. How do they translate into English?

Answer: Big music and little music

Big music is the piobaireachd. Little music is dance music, jigs, reels, etc.
5. A bagpipe is unusual in that sound keeps coming out of it at all times (so long as it's filled with air). Because of this, what musical symbol would you NOT find on bagpipe sheet music?

Answer: Rest

In music, a rest is a symbol that tells a musician how long to stop playing or singing. Bagpipe music has to be legato and with no rests, because there isn't a way to stop the sound.
6. What 1993 movie featured Mike Myers singing "If You Think I'm Sexy" to bagpipe accompaniment?

Answer: So I Married an Axe Murderer

Myers plays Charlie, a poet who is proud of his Scottish heritage. The scene in question produced the hysterical quote, "We have a piper down, I repeat, a piper is down!"
7. Which well-known bagpipe song was written by Frederick Weatherly and set to the tune of "Londonderry Air"?

Answer: Danny Boy

Weatherly actually wrote the lyrics to do with a different tune. His sister adapted the lyrics to go with "Londonderry Air".
8. Englishman John Newton wrote a hymn that has become a popular song for bagpipes. What song did he pen?

Answer: Amazing Grace

Pipers frequently play this tune at funerals. Like "Danny Boy", "Amazing Grace" was sung to different tunes before becoming the song we know today.
9. The bagpipe is mentioned in the Bible.

Answer: True

In Daniel 3:5, the bagpipe is mentioned. This leads to speculation that the instrument wasn't invented in Scotland.
10. Which international comedian uses the slogan "When clean comedy meets the bagpipes"?

Answer: Johnny Bagpipes

Johnny's act includes the theme from "Star Wars" and some AC/DC. He made a special for Bravo called "They Pipe Among Us".
