When 31-year-old Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler changed record companies, she wanted a new sound. After seeing Meat Loaf perform "Bat Out of Hell," she reached out to Meat Loaf's writer, New Yorker Richard Steinman. Steinman reported in interviews that he wrote "Total Eclipse of the Heart" for Tyler, pulling the refrain "turn around, bright eyes" from a musical he'd performed in college.
Meat Loaf reported that Steinman had promised the song to him, a claim that Steinman denied.
On its release in February, 1983, It became one of the best-selling singles of all time with over six million units sold. Future hits for Tyler include "Holding Out for a Hero" in 1984, "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?" in 1983, and "Making Love (Out of Nothing at All)" in 1995.
In 2013, "Total Eclipse of the Heart" ranked number one in a survey by UKBathrooms.com ranking people's favorite songs to sing in the shower. Other songs in the top ten included 'Boyfriend" by Justin Bieber, "Don't Stop Believing by Journey," and "Wonderwall" by Oasis.
