Twenty One Pilots was formed by three college friends from Ohio State University in Columbus. The band released their debut album "Twenty One Pilots" in 2009 and toured throughout their home state of Ohio. Other popular bands that were formed in Columbus, Ohio include Rascal Flatts and The Black Swans.

Interestingly, Josh Dun actually worked with the band's former drummer Chris Salih at a music retail store called Guitar Center and this was how he was introduced to the band. Prior to working with Twenty One Pilots Josh Dun worked with the band House of Heroes. After Josh Dun had played a few shows with Tyler Joseph they decided to become a duo and retain the Twenty One Pilots name.
