Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Denis Leary's "Irish Folk Song," he tells the listener, "Our children are leaving." That's bad enough, but what even more traumatic event comes next?

Answer: We have no heads

Leary's comment on Irish folk songs: "There isn't a happy one." (Not strictly true, but it is, after all, only satire.) The track graced the Boston-born comedian's first album, "No Cure for Cancer."
2. In the David Bowie song "Drive-In Saturday," the narrator wants someone to "pour [him] out another" one of something. What is it?

Answer: A phone

"Pour me out another phone / I'll ring and see if your friends are home." Liquid phones have yet to be invented. The science-fiction tune appeared on the album "Aladdin Sane," released in 1973.
3. In the Dead Milkmen's tune "Smokin' Banana Peels," where do the mites live?

Answer: In your eyelashes

"Take Elvis for a walk and shut up," we are also told, in this song from the 1989 EP of the same name. A New York University study showed that smoking banana peels provides no euphoric effects, and banana peels contain no narcotic materials whatsoever.
4. Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood collaborated on the song "Some Velvet Morning." What does the narrator promise to do when that particular day arrives?

Answer: Tell you about Phaedra, and how she gave me life

Phaedra is a tragic character from Greek mythology. The song was released in 1968 and went to number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States.
5. Many awful things happen to Sir Mix-a-Lot in his song about a decrepit car, "My Hooptie." Which of the following is *not* one of them?

Answer: He gets a speeding ticket

It's about the only bad thing that doesn't happen to him, in the hysterical song from the 1990 album "Seminar." The Seattle-born Anthony Ray starred in the 1995 television series "The Watcher." He recorded a number of albums which went multi-platinum, allowing a vast improvement in his choice of automobiles.
6. In the song "Sidewalk Talk," written by Madonna and recorded by musician and producer Jellybean, we are told, "You can't keep a secret" from someone or something. Who or what is it?

Answer: The ground beneath you

Despite this inability to keep secrets from inanimate objects, Jellybean, born Garry Johnson, enjoyed far greater success communicating with actual people. He was born in Chicago in 1956 and later moved to Minneapolis. His production credits include Janet Jackson, New Edition and Alexander O'Neal, among many others. On the 1985 release of "Sidewalk Talk," Madonna herself sang the chorus, while vocalist Catherine Buchanan provided the rest of the vocal track.

The single reached number one on Billboard's U.S. dance club chart.
7. On the front cover of the Radiohead album "Com Lag," there appears the phrase, "This compilation is for Japan." Of its ten songs, how many were recorded in Japan?

Answer: zero

None of the songs even refer to Japan. However, the album first went on sale there, in 2004. It was released in the U.K. and the U.S. in 2007. The album features two live tracks and eight studio recordings.
8. In the song "Supernature" by Cerrone, the future holds great danger for humanity. What calamity does a scientist unwittingly unleash upon the world?

Answer: A potion meant to increase crop production, and help feed the poor, spills and turns people into mutants

Surely this flaw would have been apparent in testing?... The Cerrone track was later remixed by house music DJ Danny Tenaglia. An album by Goldfrapp took the name of the song, but did not include an actual cover version.
9. In the Birthday Party's song "Release the Bats," where can one find "a hundred [bats] fluttering"?

Answer: Under your skirt

Either a huge skirt, or very small bats... Birthday Party singer Nick Cave has gone on to record with the Bad Seeds. He is also an author and lecturer.
10. In Sade's pop hit "Smooth Operator," she asserted that the duplicitous person of the title traveled from "coast to coast." What unusual event occurred in the chorus?

Answer: She named the destinations "L.A. to Chicago" -- but Chicago isn't on an ocean

Chicago is a considerable distance from the nearest oceans, the Atlantic and the Pacific. However, the city is on the shore of Lake Michigan, the only one of the Great Lakes to be entirely contained in the borders of the U.S.
