quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After the Renaissance period of classical music ended, it was replaced by a new form that was, at the time, considered as revolutionary as today's rap music. What was this new period called?

Answer: Baroque

The Baroque era was not as rigid and 'idiomatic' as the Renaissance era. Form was everything during the 'ars perfecta' (perfect art) of the Renaissance (Palestrina is a good example)....things loosened up a bit during the Baroque period.
2. This composer was considered the revolutionary who helped establish the Baroque period. Born in Cremona, Italy, he referred to the 'old' music as the 'first practice', and the new stuff as the 'second practice' thus ensuring a division between the two periods. Wassa hisa name-a?

Answer: Claudio Monteverdi

Born in 1567, Monteverdi started his rebellion at age 15, when his first group of motets was published. He was verbally attacked by a music theorist named Artusi who labeled this new music as 'incomprehensible' and 'breaking with tradition'.
3. An even newer musical form was introduced in 1607 by Monteverdi. What was this new form called?

Answer: opera

In 1607, Monteverdi composed 'Orfeo', which is considered the first opera.
4. This Baroque composer bristled at being called an {Italian;} he was a Venetian, if you please. (Venice was a separate state in those days), Summer, winter, spring, fall, that's all he ever heard...Italian, Italian, Italian! What's his name?

Answer: Vivaldi

Antonio Vivaldi is perhaps best remembered for his composition, 'The Four Seasons' (Frankie Valli wasn't a part of the group yet). He became a priest, and spent most of his time teaching violin to orphaned girls.
5. This rebel of a composer was known for his quick temper (he once had a fistfight with a choir boy who fooled around too much during a rehersal), his annoying habit of adding too many embellishments to those 'good old tunes', and for having tons of relatives in the music business. His name?

Answer: Bach

Johann Sebastian was born in 1685 and, according to historian Cecil Gray, '...he absorbed all styles instead of being absorbed by them.' Bach's forte was the organ and he once stated, after being complimented after a performance, that '...there's nothing to it. You only have to hit the right notes at the right time and it plays itself.
6. This German eventually wound up in England after spending years in Italy after receiving extensive training from a Prussian and once traveled to Denmark to meet a famous organist who he admired. WHEW! Oh, and he is considered the originator of an even newer musical form. Who is he?

Answer: Handel

Georg Frideric Handel benefitted greatly from his travels, and is credited with establishing the new musical genre, oratorio. Handel was {stubborn;} he liked composing operas and continued composing them long after their popularity waned. So..he compromised...he invented oratorio, which can be described as opera without actors and action.
7. This composer came in at the end of the Baroque period and is classified as a Classic composer. He was curious about a little toe-tapper by Allegri called the 'Miserere Mei Deus' that was performed only once per year in the Vatican for the Pope's ears only. It was considered so sacred and beautiful that it was kept in the Vatican for decades and never published. This guy heard pieces of it just once, and wrote it down from memory, thus letting the Miserere out of the bag. His name?

Answer: Mozart

The 'Miserere' was Allegri's only known composition. He was a member of the Vatican choir when he composed it, and it is breathtakingly exquisite. It is a polychoral work (2 choirs answering each other) and is interspersed with gregorian chants. Extremely complex, Mozart's ability to remember it after hearing it once is a measure of his genius.
8. This guy appeared on the scene at the end of the Baroque, beginning of the Classic period. Born in Austria, his first claim to fame came when he composed the music for a comic opera, 'Der krumme Teufel.' His big mistake came when he married Anna Maria Keller, who had no appreciation for his music skill. In fact, she used to rip apart his compositions so that she could set her hair with them. Who was this poor guy?

Answer: Haydn

Haydn's first choice for marriage was Therese Keller, but she entered a convent instead. Second choice was Anna Maria, Therese's older, uglier sister. Ill-tempered and sloppy, she drove Haydn into the arms of several mistresses, which Haydn rationalized by the fact that Anna Maria could bear no children.
9. Two composers during this period had numerous family members also prolific in the composition and musician game. One was {Bach;} this other one had a famous father, uncle and brother. Who was he?

Answer: Purcell

Purcell's father, Thomas, his uncle, Henry, and his brother, Daniel, were also famous.
10. One early composer can be considered the savior of music's evolution from Renaissance to Baroque by stemming the church's crackdown on the newer compositions. He composed the 'Pope Marcellus Mass' as an example of how acceptable the 'new stuff' could be. Who was he?

Answer: Palestrina

It seems that Pope Paul IV found out that some of the new church compositions had their origin in tunes sung in bars and bawdier surroundings. Palestrina, one of the most prolific composers, convinced His Holiness that all that was new wasn't bad.
