Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564, in England in Stratford-Upon-Avon. His wife Anne Hathaway was already pregnant with Susanna when they married, and she was born six months after the couple married. They had twins, Hamnet and Judith, as well but Hamnet died when he was about eleven years old. The character Hamlet was named after his son Hamnet.
In Elizabethan times only men were allowed to act on the stage. They played the women's roles as well. It was considered indecent for women to make money acting on the stage. It is believed (though some question it) that Shakespeare wrote 38 plays and 154 sonnets during his lifetime. He also wrote other poems. Some of these plays include "Hamlet," "Romeo and Juliet, "Twelfth Night," and "Richard III."
William Shakespeare is believed to have died on April 23, 1616. He left his wife the second-best bed. The reason for this is it was tradition back then that the guests would sleep on the best bed in the house. Therefore, the second-best bed was the bed that they slept on.
He wrote his own epitaph:
"Good friend for Jesus' sake forbear,
To dig the dust enclosed here.
Blessed be the man that spares these stones,
And cursed be he that moves my bones."
