Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the first name of the 2nd man to walk on the moon?

Answer: Edwin

Edwin Eugene Aldrin, Jr was born in 1930 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. His nickname of "Buzz" came about when one of his two sisters called him Buzzer rather than brother when they were very young. The name stuck and became shortened to "Buzz". In 1988, he made "Buzz" his legal first name.

2. Why was Sir Walter Raleigh sent to the Tower of London in 1603?

Answer: He was convicted of high treason

Sir Walter Raleigh had opposed the selection of James VI of Scotland to succeed Elizabeth I, something which did not endear him to the new monarch. Raleigh was accused of participating in the so-called Main Plot, a scheme to depose James and replace him with Lady Arbella Stuart.

Historians still debate whether or not Raleigh was guilty of the charges, but one thing that is certain is that his trial was a farce. The prosecution ignored the law, called Raleigh "a Spider of Hell", a "monster" and "the absolutist traitor that ever was".

The hand-picked jury took only 15 minutes to convict Raleigh, and he would spend the next 13 years as a prisoner in the Tower.

It is assumed that one of his loves, Bertha (Kinsky) von Suttner was his inspiration for creating the Nobel Prizes, established in his last will, which honor achievements in chemistry, physics, medicine, literature, economics and peace. Bertha von Suttner was one of the early Nobel Peace prize winners in 1905 for her "sincere peace activities."

5. Belle Starr was a 19th century outlaw. In which area of what is now the United States did she die?

Answer: Oklahoma Indian Territory

Belle Starr lived the life of an outlaw in the 19th century. She was known to rob cowboys and others who passed by her ranch in Oklahoma Indian Territory. It seems that she lived the life of a bandit, and even hung out with other notorious criminals of the time, such as Jesse James and his gang.

She and her husband were convicted of horse stealing in 1883, and were sent to federal prison. She spent ten months in a Detroit prison before being released. In 1889, she was murdered. The murder was never solved.

6. British executioner, Robert Orridge Baxter, who was blind in one eye, once accidentally almost killed his assistant. How?

Answer: Opened the trapdoor while he was on it

Robert Baxter (1878-1961) was England's second most proficient executioner of criminals about to meet their maker (top spot belonged to Thomas Pierrepoint). These two men had a long term ghoulish rivalry as to who had the most prolific number of hangings. Baxter's assistant, Alfred Allen, was lucky not to make that list as Baxter, who was blind in one eye, failed to see that Allen, at one hanging, was on the trapdoor still fastening the legs of the criminal - he pulled the lever and sent both murderer and assistant hurtling below.
