Infanta Princess Berengaria Jimeno of Navarre was the eldest daughter of King Sancho VI the Wise Jimeno of Navarre and Infanta Princess Sancha Trastamara of Castile and Leon. Born in 1163 in Pamplona, Navarre, Spain, her future mother-in-law, Duchess Eleanor de Poitiers of Aquitaine and Queen of England, made the journey to escort her back home. On the return journey, they were catpured and imprisoned on the island of Cyprus. Meanwhile, King Richard I the Lionheart Plantagent of England was literally crusading in the Middle East, not that far away. Upon hearing of his mother's and future wife's situation, he immediately sailed for Cyprus and sacked the tiny island. Richard and Berengaria were married on 12 May 1191 in the Chapel of St George, Limassol, Cyprus.

In the same ceremony, they were crowned the King and Queen of Cyprus. Richard then returned to his crusade and his bride continued her journey with her mother-in-law through France. However, Berengaria never made it to England during the reign of her husband and did in fact visit England after the death of her husband.

She died in 1230 in Le Mans, Anjou, France.
