Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 1956 American bio-pic "Lust for Life" told the story of artist Vincent van Gogh. What is "lust", in terms of the Seven Deadly Sins?

Answer: an intense desire for the sinful

The motion picture "Lust for Life" was based on the 1934 novel of the same name by Irving Stone. Stone used the word "lust" in the title in its secular meaning: an enthusiasm and strong eagerness for something. This is not the theological meaning. In the Seven Deadly sins, "lust" usually refers to sexual desire, especially of the forbidden sort, but may also refer to any bodily carnal lasciviousness. Lust is included in Pope Gregory I's list of deadly sins, the list most often used by Anglicans (Episcopalians), Lutherans and Methodists, as well as by the evangelist Billy Graham.

In Dante's "la Divina Commedia", he defines lust as "an excessive love of others" such that it reduces one's love of God. St. Thomas Aquinas defines the sin of lust to include masturbation, adultery, fornication, rape, seduction, and bestiality.

2. Though similar concepts to the phrase "Cleanliness is next to godliness" are found in ancient religious tracts, it was first recorded in a sermon in 1778 given by what founder of Methodism?

Answer: John Wesley

Joseph Smith was the founder of Mormonism. Cecil Calvert was the founder of Maryland. Babur was the founder of the Mughal Empire in central Asia.

Methodism is a Protestant religion based on the teachings of John Wesley. Early on, John Wesley and his followers were called "Methodist" because of their use of rules and methods to dictate their religious convictions. The original intent behind the name was mockery, but John Wesley took on the phrase and used it to his benefit, turning it into the title of the movement.

8. According to I Thessalonians 4:17 "... we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air ..." (NRSV) How do some American evangelical Christians describe this event?

Answer: the Rapture

Although the term "rapture" is not used in the Bible, it has been adopted by millenarian Christians, especially in the USA, to describe an eschatological event in which the faithful and righteous are transported direcly to Heaven. Some say this will occur at the same time as the Second Coming of Christ; others that it will occur one thousand years before the Second Coming.

The sixteen-novel series "Left Behind" by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins have done much to promote belief in the Rapture.

Answer: Romans

In total the New Testament includes 21 books known as the Epistles, with 14 of these being authored by Paul.
