Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

THE PRAYER:

The Hail Mary is a traditional Christian prayer addressing Mary, the mother of Jesus. It is based on the following two biblical passages from the Gospel of Luke:

1. The Angel Gabriel's visit to Mary known as the Annunciation:
"And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women." Luke 1: 26 -28 KJV

2. Mary's subsequent visit to Elizabeth (the mother of John the Baptist) known as the Visitation:
"When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb. Then Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb." Luke 1:41 - 42 KJV

Many churches have a version of this prayer to Mary, particularly those with a historic connection with the Latin Church, but the Roman Catholic version ends with an appeal for her intercession on their behalf. It is also used while saying the Angelus and the Rosary.

THE SONG:

"Hail Mary, Gentle Woman" is one of the best-known hymns by American liturgical composer Carey Landry. Born in 1944, Landry was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1971 and, while serving as a campus minister of Louisiana State University in 1976, he began to produce collections of original songs and to focus on youth ministry and church musical groups.

By 1980 he was focusing entirely on speaking and performing at Catholic conferences and was released from his priesthood to focus on these areas. He has since married Carol Jean Kinghorn and the pair work together to minister religious education, prayer, liturgy and music. They are best known for their "Hi God" series of songs for children which began over 40 years ago.

Carol and Carey are both hospital chaplains and co-ordinators of music at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Indianapolis and they have given concerts, speaking tours and workshops around the world.
