quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Most Blessed Sacrament is reserved in vessels kept inside the ____________ for later distribution to the sick and for adoration.

Answer: Tabernacle

In every Catholic Church, there is a 'box' called the tabernacle where consecrated Hosts (Our Lord Himself) are reserved for adoration, worship, and for distribution of Holy Communion during the Mass and for the sick. While it's true the Monstrance holds the Host for adoration and worship, that Host is not for distribution to the sick. One way to recognize the tabernacle is that usually a red or white candle will be burning very close to it to tell us that our Lord is present in the tabernacle. If the Blessed Sacrament is for some reason removed from the tabernacle, the light will be put out.
2. What percentage of beeswax must all candles used during the Mass be made up of?

Answer: 51%

It has has been the tradition of the Church for quite a long time that all candles used during the liturgy be made up of at least 51% beeswax.
3. What is the narrow piece of cloth worn over the left arm during the Traditional Latin Mass by priests?

Answer: Maniple

During the celebration of the Holy Tridentine Mass, priests wear the maniple over their left arm. It originally served as a napkin and is the same liturgical color as the Chasuble.
4. Which Council was held in 381 A.D.?

Answer: Council of Constantinople

The Council of Constantinople declared that after the Bishop of Rome, the bishops of Constantinople ranked above all the other bishops of the Church. This was because Constantinople was considered the "new Rome".
5. What is the permission given by the Pope to celebrate the Tridentine Mass called?

Answer: Indult

I feel that priests do not need the indult to celebrate the Traditional Latin Mass because of Pope St. Pius V's Papal Quo Primum. None the less, indult means "permission", and the Vatican desires that every priest who wants to say the TLM receive an indult from his bishop.
6. The Feast of the Sacred Heart is celebrated when?

Answer: Third Friday after Pentecost

The Feast of the Sacred Heart is a reminder of all that we owe to the love our Lord.
7. The stiff, square piece of card, usually covered with white cloth, used to cover the Chalice to prevent things from falling into it is called what?

Answer: Pall

The pall is used to prevent small particles (ie, dust, and other foreign objects) from falling into the chalice containing the Most Precious Blood of our Savior. The chalice veil is a piece of cloth that may be draped over the pall. A burse is a folding container holding a corporal or extra purificator which may be placed on top of the veil.
8. The word 'Kephas'(which is Aramaic) means what?

Answer: Rock

'Kephas' means Rock. Christ changed Simon's name to Peter, which is 'Kephas', to show that Peter is the rock on which Christ will build His Church.
9. When the priest says, at the Latin Mass, "Dominus Vobiscum", the correct response would be what?

Answer: Et cum spiritu tuo

'Dominius Vobiscum' means 'The Lord be with you' and the correct response to that is 'Et cum spiritu tuo' which means 'And with your spirit'.
10. The holiest part of the Mass is the what?

Answer: Consecration

The Consecration is when the priest repeats the words of Christ at the Last Supper. The Bread and the Wine are substantially changed into the True Body and Blood of Lord Jesus Christ.
11. "Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus" translates as

Answer: Outside of the Church there is no salvation

"Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus" actually means "Outside of the Church there is no salvation". Even the early Church Fathers, some as early as 100 a.d. taught this. It is a dogma of our faith.
12. What are the square shaped hats that are black for priests, purple for bishops, and red for cardinals called?

Answer: Birettas

Birettas were most commonly worn before Vatican II, but some of the clergy still prefer to wear them. Zucchettos follow the same color scheme but are round, not square.
13. According to Catholic Doctrine, the Host consecrated at Mass is Jesus Christ.

Answer: True

The Host is 100% Jesus Christ. It is in no way bread at all. The accidents of bread remain, but the bread no longer exists. It is truly the Body of our Lord Jesus Christ.
14. Along with being the Vicar of Christ on earth, the Pope is also the Bishop of his own Diocese. What Diocese is this?

Answer: Rome

The Pope is often called "The Bishop of Rome" because in fact Rome is his official diocese.
15. According to the Catholic Faith, is Jesus fully human or fully divine?

Answer: Both

Jesus is 100% Human and 100% Divine. Fully God and fully Man.
16. According to Catholic Doctrine, Mary had more children after Jesus was born.

Answer: False

Mary was a perpetual virgin and our spiritual mother!
17. The four evangelists used three different Greek words in referring to the miracles of Christ: Teras, Dynamis, and Semeion. What does Semeion mean?

Answer: An Important Sign

John's favorite word for miracle is semeion. He favored it because it showed the most important point about Jesus' miracles.
18. In Catholic morality, which of the answers below is not one of the conditions for a sin to be mortal?

Answer: Outside influence

If the sin isn't grave, you didn't know it was grave, or you didn't have full consent, then the sin isn't mortal, but only venial.
19. According to the Catholic Church, is damaging someone's property a sin of omission or commission?

Answer: Commission

An example of a sin of omission would be missing mass on Sunday, which would also be a mortal sin.

Answer: Penance

The Sacrament of Penance is one of the Sacraments of Healing.
