Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Welcome to The Mustard Seeds' first-ever team quiz. We may be small in size (like the seed itself) but we strive to be mighty and a help to any and all (also like the seed, when it fully matures as a tree). Jesus first spoke of the mustard seed in the book of Matthew (KJV). How did He describe the mustard seed?

Answer: As the least of all seeds

The Kings James Bible quotes Jesus as saying the mustard seed, "when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof." (Matthew 13:32)

From such a humble beginning as the 'least of all seeds', great things are accomplished!

2. In Exodus 12:21-22 (NASB), what plant did God tell the Israelites to use to paint lamb's blood on the doorposts during the first Passover?

Answer: hyssop

The correct answer is hyssop, which had other ceremonial uses. While the other three plants are similar to hyssop, they are not found in the Bible.

In Exodus 12:27 (NASB), God describes the meaning of the blood on the doorposts. 'It is a Passover sacrifice to the Lord because He passed over the houses of the sons of Israel in Egypt when He struck the Egyptians, but spared our homes."

Jesus obediently fulfilled His Father's eternal plan when He became the sinless Lamb of God (John 1:29 NASB) who shed His blood on the cross as the atoning sacrifice once for all our sins. (Hebrews 9:11-12 NASB)

3. The book of Exodus gives us the first mention of manna in the Bible. Though manna itself was not a plant, it is compared in Numbers 11:7 to the seed of which herb? (KJV)

Answer: coriander

The book of Psalms (78:25), in the King James Version, refers to manna as 'angels' food". Yet that did not satisfy the Israelites, who complained about the food that God provided for them.

In Numbers 11:6-7 (also in the KJV): "We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick: But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes."

4. To those who study symbolism in the Bible, which flowering plant, known to represent resurrection, is the first to blossom and flower in the spring? In Numbers 17, the miracle of Aaron's rod produced them in abundance overnight.

Answer: Almond

Interestingly, the almond is mentioned only in the Old Testament...six times. In Numbers 17, the miracle of Aaron's rod produced almonds overnight. Almonds are mentioned again in Ecclesiastes 12:5, likely in a poem, signifying aging and the fear of dying with its association of fresh, white, almond blooms likened to that of the white hair of the aged. In Exodus 25:33-34, motifs of almonds were used in multiple designs on the lamp stand in the tabernacle.

5. What particular plant is mentioned as growing in both the first book of the Bible and in the last book as well?

Answer: the tree of life

While the book of Genesis speaks of the tree of life as it appeared in the garden of Eden in the 2nd chapter, the book of Revelation also tells of its existence at a future time. The 22nd chapter of that book relates that it will later be present in a city called New Jerusalem.

6. This Old Testament character had a reputation for cheating his brother out of his inheritance as the eldest son. Who later grew and is described in Hebrews as blessing his sons and worshiping God, leaning on the top of his staff (Hebrews 11:21 NIV)?

Answer: Jacob

In Genesis 27, we read how Rebekah encouraged Jacob to deceive his father by pretending to be Esau, so that he would receive the blessing as the eldest son. Throughout his life, Jacob made many mistakes, but at the end of his life, he worshipped God, leaning on his staff. This is a reference to the fact that because of an encounter with an angel of God in Genesis 32, he walked with a limp. What in human terms would be a weakness became his source of greatest strength, as he recognised his dependence on God.

7. After nearly 40 days and nights in the ark, Noah, sent out a dove to find proof that the waters had subsided. What plant type evidence did it bring back?

Answer: Olive leaf

Genesis 8:11 was the first mention of the olive in the Bible during the story of Noah's ark. It is said that, before the crucifixion of Jesus, the Garden of Gethsemane was actually an olive orchard where olives could be picked and pressed for their oil. Olive oil is used for cooking and for care of the skin and hair. Farmers would take shoots from their best trees and carefully grow them to maturity. Psalms 128:3 tells us, "your sons will be like olive shoots around your table."

8. Which Bible character do we first meet in Judges 6 (NIV) when he is threshing corn on the winepress because of fear of the Midianites, yet he later grew in grace and won a victory over them?

Answer: Gideon

You can read the story of Gideon in Judges Chapters 6-8. The Moabites had a powerful army. It says in Judges 6:11 that Gideon was threshing corn in the winepress (NIV) because he was afraid of the Midianites, but the angel assures him of the Lord's presence with him and calls him a warrior (v12). God gives him signs that he is indeed with him (vv33-40). In Chapter 7, we read how he started with an army of 32,000, but ended with an army of only 300 (vv1-7), with which he defeated the Midianites.

In Judges 7:2, God gives the reason for only using 300 men: Israel would boast against God, saying 'My own strength has saved me'.

9. In the King James Version of the New Testament book of Mark 4, Jesus told a story with a hidden lesson regarding a man who was planting: "Hearken, Behold, there went out a sower to sow." The man was in the process of planting "seeds"; but what exactly was he planting, at least in a manner of speaking, according to Jesus' explanation in verse 14?

Answer: the word (of God)

Hearken means to listen and behold means to look.

At the end of the parable in verse 20, Jesus tells his disciples that the Word of God which falls on good ground and is well received will bring forth much fruit in great increments to varying degrees, apparently depending on the individual who receives it.

10. Each of the countries below has either a tree or a tree-leaf on its flag. But which one does NOT have a tree on it that is mentioned in the Bible (KJV)?

Answer: Canada

The current flag of Cyprus has a pair of green olive branches beneath a map of the island coloured in copper ('Cyprus' means 'copper' in Greek). After the Flood narrated in Genesis 6-9 Noah sent out a dove which brought back in its claws an olive leaf. Lebanon was famous for its cedar trees, which were used in the building of Solomon's temple (II Chronicles 2). "Palm" occurs several times in the Bible, but most memorably at John 12.13 where the people of Jerusalem tear down branches of the "phoinikes" ("date palms"). On the flag of Fiji is a four-quartered crest with a palm in the upper right. Canada's flag has a red maple leaf on a white background between two red bars. Some maples are found today in Europe, but the tree itself is not mentioned in the Bible.
